Futsal club plan for Fawkner (Victoria)

A 17-YEAR-OLD soccer fan who loves nothing more than kicking a ball around is launching a junior Futsal club in Fawkner.Riccardo Marchioli, who has played with English Premier League club Bolton Wanderers and is a state selector, said he would coach every team in the indoor soccer club, with age groups from under-four to 12.

“I really love my football,” he said, pointing out that he did not mean Aussie rules.

Marchioli, a Football Federation of Victoria accredited junior coach and head of youth development at Meadow Park Soccer Club, said he was discouraged to see that, despite a global peak in interest in soccer, the game was not reported much in Australian newspapers.

“It’s common to see 17 pages of AFL news and one column of soccer news in the weekend papers,” he said.

“It’s disappointing because soccer actually has more junior numbers in Victoria than AFL does.”

Riccardo, who plays outdoor soccer for Essendon Royals, said the Futsal club would be a safe and relaxed environment for players to develop.

“I like to base my training on creativity, and put no pressure on them when they play,” he said.

“I don’t look at the results, I look at how they play the game,” he said.

Riccardo, Year 12 at Aitken College in Greenvale, said he hoped to continue coaching after school.

“I definitely want to be involved with football and am thinking about studying journalism to become a commentator,” he said.

Trials will be held this Thursday and Friday at Fawkner Community Centre. Details: 0424 396 311.

Winter State League Round 6 Review

Football NSW LogoWinter State league heads into the month of June with round six being played and it was an action pack night of Futsal with a number of entertaining games giving the spectators in attendance some quality Futsal.

Match of the night in the women’s lived up to its billing as the only two remaining undefeated sides Liverpool Fusion and Sydney Tragic as they battle to keep their unbeaten runs alive and neither side was prepared to give an inch. The match started at a nice tempo a steadily built throughout the opening period. Both sides were moving the ball around the court nicely however magic enjoyed a large bulk of the possession. Tragic went into half time with a two-nil cushion.

The second half both sides were fired up but it was some fine keeping by Michelle Dingwall that kept her side in the contest. Tragic were the first to score when Dingwall save the first shot and was unlucky as the ball rebounded to the feet of one of the Tragic and she fired it home. The game was beyond doubt as the Tragic were finishing the stronger and led by Natalie Spirovski they pressed for a fourth and were rewarded with 2 minutes left when they made it four-nil to remain undefeated and sitting top after six matches.

Men’s

A lack luster Inner West Allstars accounted for Maccabi One-nil. Maccabi will walk away disappointed as they had a number of opportunities to put the Allstars away but the quality of Allstars was enough to get them home thanks to a late Dean Storey winner.

An Andy Mead hatrick saw the West City Crusaders run out with convincing seven-one victors over Northern Beaches.

Plumpton kept the pressure on the top sides with a handy four-one victory in over Parramatta Blues. Daniel Fogarty and Luis Freitas both getting doubles for Plumpton.

Sydney City managed a three-one victory over the Dural Warriors. This was a physical encounter with both sides challenging for every loose ball.

Quake enjoyed a goal fest against the winless Shire Futsal with Futsalroo Simon Keith getting a Hatrick with Danny Martinez and Gary Seymour both getting doubles. On a sour note the hapless Shire boys lost Tim Cgouros late in the game with a suspected broken leg, at nine-nil down put his body on the line to stop a tenth goal as a result he stopped the ball but collided with the post and was taken to hospital best wishes with your recovery Tim.

The best was saved till last as the undefeated Sydney Benfica took on the confident Commodores outfit lead by the Dingwall brothers. This was a fiery encounter with the Commodores mixing it the Benfica boys. Commodores took the Lead though Nelson McLaughlin and some inspired keeping from Shane Linton kept the Commodores in the lead. Chris Dingwall put the match beyond doubt with 3 minutes to go with a nice chip that went in off the under side of the bar, ending Benfica’s unbeaten run. Commodores will gain a lot of confidence from this result and will be dangerous for the remainder of the season.

Lamberton laps up experience of a lifetime

IN Brazil, Gladstone futsal star Sophie Lamberton was treated like a superstar and understandably, the 17 year old was reluctant to return home when she did.

Lamberton arrived home in Gladstone after spending three and a half weeks in Brazil, on tour with the Under-19 Australian Girls’ Futsal team – an experience of a lifetime for the talented athlete.

“After the games, we were treated like a superstar with kids running up to us to get an autograph,” she said.

“I wanted to stay for a year and play professionally for a club there.”

While on tour, Lamberton said she was approached by various people suggesting she make the move to play club futsal in Brazil.

But the Gladstone State High student in her final year of school said this year is out of the question, although next year it could be an option for her.

With the Australian team scattered around the country, they had not trained together prior to their Brazil trip.

The first week of the tour was spent training twice a day under the guidance of Brazilian coaches, something that had been highly beneficial, she said.

In between training sessions, the girls played matches against various regional sides from around Brazil, winning all of their matches except for their first clash with Belo Horizonte.

“The games were tough but we were better and played a higher standard of futsal,” she said.

Learning new skills and the Brazilian version of the game was the best part of the tour for the striker, who played on cement floors for the first time as well as without shinpads, she said.

Seeing a new country and culture has ignited the travel bug in Lamberton who said she was keen to see more of the world after her trip around Brazil.

Back in Gladstone, Lamberton will continue to play futsal once a week at the PCYC and will travel to Melbourne for the Australian trials later this year.

This week, she is in Mackay with the Capricornia School Girls’ team contesting the state titles.

TERRE HAUTE – Although the 2008 Indiana State soccer team has already added 14 recruits to their roster for the upcoming season, coach Vernon Croft announced the addition of two more players to finalize the total roster to 16.

Seyma Erenli and Claire Gibbons, both sophomores, round out Croft’s largest recruiting class since his arrival in 1999.

“Over the spring we have tried to create an environment of competitiveness for positions and with the last two to join our team we have succeeded in that,” said Croft. “Seyma and Claire both come from environments where soccer is a premier sport and the addition of them will certainly continue the passionate level our players have for soccer.”

Erenli is the second recruit who hails from Australia that will join the Sycamores in the fall. She has played club soccer with the Ashburton Women’s Soccer Club for five years under coach Chris Mikail. She has also been in the Victorian Women’s Premier League for four years which is the highest level of competition in the state. She has represented Victoria in four separate national tournaments. In addition, she is a part of the Australian National Futsal Team who will be competing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup this fall in Barcelona.

“Seyma’s recent call up to the Australian National Futsal Team is a huge accomplishment for her and really shows the level of experience and success she can bring to our program here as a very dangerous forward,” Croft added. “Her leadership ability within her club and the National Team will help continue the competitive environment we have at ISU.”

Gibbons is a transfer from Saint Leo University in Irchester, England. She is the fourth recruit coming to ISU from outside the United States. Gibbons has played with many different teams beginning with the Irchester Romans. After, she moved on to play with the Rushden and Diamonds where she played for the ladies team and the Centre of Excellence. She captained the team to a League Cup in her last season. Gibbons also participated on the U-16 county team where she was crowned an All-County champion.

At the age of 16, Gibbons moved to London and played for the Charlton Women’s Academy and the women’s reserve team where she trained regularly with the England international team. She played collegiately for one year at Saint Leo University.

“Claire has had the experience of playing with England National Team members within her club, Charlton Athletic, and this experience and maturity at playing within that level will be a big asset for us,” Croft said of Gibbons. “Her composure and technical ability on the ball will help in our ability to keep possession in the back.”
