The Whistle Blower Blog : Futsal Referees

Referees are only human.

We can be Fathers, Mothers, Brothers, Sisters, Uncles, Aunties, Sons or even Daughters.

We come in all shapes and sizes.

A lot of us are only kids.

Some of us are as young as 14 trying to earn a little pocket money.

Sometimes we referee games without a second referee.

Some of us are only new. We only learn by doing.

Sometimes we make mistakes. Even experienced Referees.

Sometimes we view the play from a different angle to a Coach or a spectator.

Sometimes our view is obstructed especially when there are 10 players on the court.

Sometimes we don’t see everything. No video referees in our sport.

Sometimes we look away for that split second.

Sometimes we have to interpret rules that are ambiguous.

Sometimes we get upset and take comments to heart.

After all, we are only human. Please give us a fair go.

Winter State League Round 8 Review

Football NSW Logo

The Futsal Winter State league entered round 8 on a very cold night at the Sports Halls at Sydney Olympic Park. Tonight’s games produced a large number of goals and even a few red cards as the race to the semi finals continues to heat up with both Men’s and Women’s tables very tight.

In the Women’s action

The fourth placed Sydney City Eagles took on the fifth placed Inner West Allstars; a win would see Inner West move level on points with Sydney City so both sides had plenty to play for. Inner West lead by Elyce Goss was too strong on the night for Sydney City and ran out convincing winners with a seven-two score line.

Match of the night for the women’s games pitted first place Sydney Tragics lead by Natalie Spirovski against second place Quake lead by Amanda Bowering. This was an even contest throughout as both sides were playing some entertaining Futsal. Quake lead one-nil at half time and the second half was a tense affair with both sides attacking playing end to end Futsal. As both teams were pressing for the vital breakthrough the frustration built and it lead to the sending of Natalie Spirovski for a last man foul after Caitlin Jarvie was through on goal. Not long after the sending off Quake sealed the points to move one point behind Sydney Tragic on the table.

The Final women’s match saw Dural Warriors take on Liverpool Fusion. Liverpool Fusion were far too strong on the night for the young Dural side and ran out seven-one victors to hold onto third position on the table. Dural remain in sixth position.

In the Men’s action

The fifth placed Dural Warriors took on third placed commodores. Dural warriors had a night to remember with Greg Giovenali leading his side to a convincing eight-nil victory. The win sees Dural moved up to fourth position on goal difference while commodores lost three positions and are currently laying in sixth.

Maccabi registered their second win of the season with a four-two victory over the Parramatta Blues. This result sees Maccabi move to ninth position on the ladder and Parramatta remain in eleventh.

First placed Sydney Benfica took on ninth placed Northern Beaches. Benfica never got out of first gear and were comfortable four-two winners with Marcelo Andrace grabbing a double for Benfica.

Match of the night in the men’s saw eight placed Sydney City Eagles take on fourth placed Plumpton. With only two points separating these sides it was always going to be a physical encounter. The youthful Plumpton have shocked a few thus far and tonight was no exception as the ran out emphatic six-one winners with Kane Wright leading the way with a well deserved double. Plumpton have moved up a position to third while Sydney City remains in eight position.

Inner West Allstars took on the winless Shire Futsal and for two weeks running the Allstars have put fourteen goals past their opponents. Tonight Shire faced the music with Adrian Vissari backing up his seven goal haul last week with six tonight. Shire were not disgraced and managed to put five past the Allstars defence. With the victory Allstars move to fourth position on the table on goal difference and Shire remain at the foot of the table yet to record a victory.

Last match of the night was the second placed Quake taking on the impressive West City Crusaders. Quake dominated the first half action and could have easily been four or 5 up at the break but they were content with their three-nil advantage. In the second half West City jumped out of the box with two early goals and put the pressure back onto Quake and the responded with the experienced Simon Keith guiding his side to victory. Quake remains in second while West City also held on to their position.

And now to Brazil

SOLOMON Kurukuru will spend a month in Fiji training ahead of the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil, September.

The local side will represent Oceania in the World Cup after winning the OFC Futsal qualifier in Fiji last Saturday. They beat New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji, Tahiti and Tuvalu to win the tournament. Their only loss was in their game against Vanuatu.

Coach Victor Wai’ia said they will return to train in Fiji for a month before heading off to Brazil. This is because Fiji have a similar court size that will be used in the World Cup. Futsal is a five-a-side indoor version of soccer.

Wai’ia said: “Our main problem is lack of proper training facilities. This has affected us in the OFC championship,” he said.

“We shouldn’t have conceded the 19 goals scored against us,” he said.

Wai’ia said the team will also have two or three international matches before going to the World Cup.

WELCOME

Thousand of fans, families and friends turned up at Honiara International Airport to welcome the young heroes on arrival yesterday.

Wai’ia attributed their victory to the collective support they received from all Solomon Islanders.

“The boys are physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually fit,” he said. “However, without your support, they will not come this far,” Wai’ia said.

He thanked:

  • God for all the things He has done for the team since the beginning of the campaign,
  • Solomon Islands Government for the financial assistance, Solomon Islands Football Federation and other stakeholders who assisted the team in one way or the other,
  • Families, communities and futsal fans, and
  • Rob and Brian, committed futsal experts from Sydney, who were with the team to analyse the weaknesses and strengthened it before the next match.

Extra time wasn’t enough to decide the winner, which took the match into a penalty shoot-out. Goalkeeper Katarina Mihaliek was superb between the posts and saved her side to wrap up a 4-3 penalty shoot-out triumph.

Coach Tina Nastasi was proud of her side’s achievements. The team faces state finals in Penrith on June 26.

Winter State League Round 7 Review

Football NSW LogoThe Futsal Winter State League moved into round seven we are now moving into the business time with teams starting to make there final dash for a semi final berth.Tonight for the crowd in attendance was a feast of hotly contested matches and all would have gone away pleased with the nights action.

In the women’s action…

First place Sydney Tragic took on fifth placed Inner West Allstars. Allstars started the game with only four players and were punished early with Tragic women taking an early two-nil lead within the opening minutes of the match. Allstars had the full complement arrive not long after and put in gallant effort, but Sydney Tragic’s movement and passing game was to strong for the Allstars and they ran out convincing five-one victors.

The next encounter saw the second placed Quake take on the sixth place Dural Warriors. This was a game in which Quake never really got out of first gear, the Dural girls battled strong but the experience of the Quake girls was the difference wit them running out eventual winners three-one.

In the match of the for the women’s round third placed Liverpool Fusion took on fourth Place Sydney City Eagles. This match was a must win for Sydney City side to consolidate there top four spot after Allstars couldn’t manage a win early in the night. This was a hard fought game of Futsal with neither side wanting to be the wrong end of the score line. Sydney city lead by Fabiana Perfilio started to fine there form and moved the ball nicely around the court, Fusion looked happy to site back and catch the eagles on the break with the dangerous Renee Tomkins in there lineup are always a chance of scoring goals. The match finished with Sydney City running out three-one victors. Dispite the win Sydney City and Liverpool fusion remain in the same positions on the ladder.

In the men’s action…

Inner West Allstars lead by futsalroos Lachlan Wright and Adrian Vizzari were always going to be a tuff ask for the Parramatta Blues, this was made even harder for the Blues when only four players showed up. To Parramatta’s credit they kept trying the to the final whistle but were hammered fourteen-nil this could have been move but for some good keeping by Guido Anndai and some poor finishing from the Allstars.

The Commodores were looking to break into the top five after knocking off leaders Benfica the week before. They played host to a young Northern Beaches outfit that took a surprise early lead thanks to Engelo Rumora effort after five minutes. Commodores lead by the Dingwall brothers changed the tempo of the game and started to create a number of chances but the Northern Beaches would not lay down and made the Commodores grind out the result which they did thanks to goals by Scott Dingwall, Chris Dingwall and Nelson McLaughlin.

Plumpton who sit one point outside the top four needed a win against the bottom placed Shire Futsal. This was a game where neither side wanted to lose and with no less then seven yellows handed out it was on for young and old. This was Shire best performance as they continue to improve each week however the youth of Plumpton was too good in on the night and the ran out eight-three winners.

Match of the night was Sydney City Eagles lead by Leo Carle verse the Campbelltown Quake led by Futsalroo Simon Keith. This game was always had the making of a blockbuster and it lived up to the hype with a decent crowd on hand to see these two side battle it out. Quake started the stronger with Tuan Cao having a few early efforts, the first real chance of the match fell to Issac Waddick be a fine save by Jon Azzopardi in the Quake goals denied Eagles the lead. Quake took the lead not long after with a fine through ball by Simon Keith finding Tuan Cao just outside the “D” his shot managed to scramble though the legs of Danny Georgakopoulos in the Sydney City goal to give Quake a one-nil lead going into half time. In the second half the tackles started flying in, Leo Carle’s passing game was on song with some precision passing almost leading to the equalizer. The Equaliser came for Sydney City when they were given a spot kick which Leo Carle dispatched to tie it up a one apiece. This fired the Quake side up but with team in foul trouble for the remainder of the match it was always going to be tuff. With five minutes remaining Simon Keith stood up to be the hero for his side when he clinched the game winner with a shot that Georgakopoulos in the Sydney City goal was unable to prevent going in. Leo Carle did have a few chances from the 10metre spot in the dying minutes but was unable to convert and Quake take the points in a most enjoyable game of Futsal.

West City Crusaders needed a victory to keep there finals hopes alive and it was always going to tuff against a well organised Dural Warriors outfit. This game was end to end with both sides creating a large number of chances but the difference on the night was Marcio Da Silva who in the West City goal was outstanding making a number of fine saves none better the his penalty stop from Rhys Giovenali late in the game to give his side the points. With this result Dural have dropped out of the four for the first time this competition, While West City move level on points with Dural just outside the top four.

Last game of the night was the first placed Sydney Benfica take on the tenth placed Maccabi. Both teams were slow to get going in this match but the Maccabi boys were inspired from last rounds improvement and they took the fight to Benfica, but they meet an in form Sydney Benfica who are and playing some nice Futsal at the minute. Benfica were too strong for Maccabi and they came away with the points with a four-one result.
