OFC : Our young futsal men come of age

HOW sweet it is.
Yet another of our teams have beaten Oceania’s dominant soccer nation, New Zealand.
But this time it was an extra special win.For it was by the national futsal team, a group of young men specially groomed for this day.
They have been brought up through the age groups in this five-aside indoor version of football.

They are the youngest team in the Oceania Futsal World Cup qualifying tournament in Fiji.
They still face tough games ahead, especially against New Caledonia (today), Fiji (tomorrow) and Vanuatu (Thursday).
But a 5-1 win over New Zealand?

Let’s enjoy yet another special day for our soccer.
And send our young futsal heroes all our support as they chase a place in the finals in Brazil.
Go, Solo, Go.

OFC : Fans cry foul as vehicles fall foul to thieves at play-offs

FANS have asked the Fiji Football Association to stop turning a blind eye to the security of those attending the Oceania Football Confederation Futsal Championships at the Vodafone Arena. This after a number of cars was broken into during the first day of competition on Sunday while fans watched the Fiji-New Caledonia match.

Fiji FA chief executive Bob Kumar has also washed its hands off the issue, saying the Fiji Sports Council was responsible for the security outside the premises.

However, FSC venue manager Selwyn Williams said even though the tourney was being played at the Sports City, car owners were parking their vehicles at the venue at their own risk.

Abdul Shah, whose car was one of those broken into, said it seemed Fiji FA as usual was only concerned about making money.

“We have our cars out there and this gets broken into and Bob Kumar tells me nothing can be done and it’s not Fiji FA’s responsibility,” Shah said

“It seems that Fiji FA is not worried about the fans’ security but only getting the people in at any costs.”

Shah said the least which cold be done by Fiji FA was to provide some security to look after the vehicles.

Kumar said they had spoken to FSC and Williams.

“The car park was free on Sunday and from today (yesterday) they started charging and providing security,” Kumar said.

Williams said as any other facility a person could park their vehicles but it was at their own risk.

“We will charge and provide security but the owners park at their own risk just like anywhere else,” William said.

Meanwhile, Rewa striker Kamal Hassan was the toast Fiji as his two late goals propelled Fiji to a 4-2 win over New .

Fiji Coach Imtiaz Khan was delighted with the result and said he was not happy to settle for a draw after New Caledonia equalised.

Fiji was on a bye yesterday and plays the Solomon Islands at 8pm today in a crucial encounter.

Maccabi Futsal on the world stage

The Maccabi Futsal Club is sending a 12-man side to take on the best in the world at a tournament in Portugal next month.MACCABI will test its skills against the cream of international futsal next month after accepting invitations to participate in two elite-level tournaments in Portugal.

The Maccabi Futsal Club announced a 12-man touring squad to tackle clubs from European football giants, such as Sporting Paris, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica, in an exhibition tournament to launch a new stadium on the Azores Island.

The side will then travel to Guarda City in the country’s north to challenge for the Gold Cup, which will comprise the same teams but with clubs from the US and Iran as well.

The team will be headed by Australian Futsalroo coach and recently appointed Oceania Futsal development officer Scott Gilligan, as well as current Futsalroo captain Simon Keith.

The side was invited to the inauguration of the new stadium, where they will play professional sides at the sold-out venue, with the tournament also set to receive television coverage.

Maccabi Futsal president John Myers told The AJN that this tour was all about building towards Maccabiah 2009.

“The idea behind taking the tour was to get the international overseas experience and get battle-hardened, with the big vision being Maccabiah 2009 and to get a core group of players together,” he said.

“It’ll be a battle, but it’ll be an experience. We’ll see the results in Israel next year.”

Maccabi has been playing in the Futsal NSW Winter Super League and is now training twice weekly in preparation for the Portuguese tournament.

The side has focused on blooding new talent in the early stages of the season, giving plenty of game time to the side’s youngsters in an effort acclimatise them to the rigours of high-level futsal.

The club will take two development players from the under-18 side, Andy Kanchik and Marco Pim, on the trip, and Myers said the youngsters were fitting in nicely.

Myers said that the squad is buzzing as they count down towards the trip, describing the atmosphere around the club as “electric”.

Vanuatu responded to their heartbreaking last minute loss to New Zealand last night with a comprehensive 11-1 victory over New Caledonia, Tahiti scored an improbable come-from-behind 3-2 victory over New Zealand and the Solomon Islands beat out Fiji in an exciting 11-6 goal fest.

The Solomon Islands lead the table on 9 points while Vanuatu and Tahiti are both just three points behind.

There were 34 goals scored on Match Day Three of the tournament and the boisterous crowd of over 1500 helped make the day the most exciting so far.

Derek Malas opened the days scoring with his first goal of the day coming just one minute into the opening game against New Caledonia and the scoring didn’t stop until the 37th minute when Jack Vira Ala converted his fourth and Vanuatu’s eleventh.

Goals in between fell to Siardon Mera Talkanamal (2), Jack Vira Ala (4), Louis Dominique (2), Malas, and Sean Wowut Fanai. New Caledonia scored a consolation goal through Yvon Pourouoro.

In game two Tahiti produced the most memorable finish to a game so far when Michel Maihuri scored his second goal of the night with just nine seconds remaining on the clock to propel Tahiti to a 3-2 win over New Zealand.

New Zealand were leading 2-1 with one minute and forty seconds to play after Joshua Martin and Marvin Eakin cancelled out Romeo Patira’s early equalizer.

But it was Tahiti who were celebrating after two goals in the space of 90 seconds earned Tahiti their second successive win of the championship to earn them a spot in second place.

In the days final game the Solomon Islands scored a comprehensive victory over Fiji after the two sides were locked at 4-4 after an exhilarating first half.

OFC Day 3 : Solomon’s strike eleven against Fiji

The Solomon Island reasserted their dominance on the OFC Futsal Tournament in Suva tonight with a comprehensive 11-6 win over tournament hosts Fiji.

It was match of two contrasting styles, Solomon’s preferring the silky smooth passing and dribbling while Fiji looked for the direct route and tried to out muscle their opponents.

It was the most exhilarating match of the tournament and the packed crowd of 2,500 were witness to a match fuelled on adrenaline that saw both teams heading into the halftime break locked at 4-4.

The Solomon Islands regained their lead twenty seconds into the second half when fan favourite Elliot Ragomo found the back of the net after a skilful run.

The Solomon’s quickly piled on another three goals before Fiji could reply and the score quickly escalated to 11-6 and sent the crowd into overdrive.

Goals for Solomon were scored by Micah Lea’alafa (4), James Egata (2), Francis Lafai, Elliot Ragomo (2); Jack Wetney and Jenan Kapu.

Kamal Hassan scored a hatrick for Fiji alongside two goals from Mira Sahib and one from Alvin Avinesh.

Solomon Island Coach Victor Wai’ia was elated with the result and was happy with the discipline his side showed.

“We sticked to the game plan today and everyone was very committed. The crowd support gives our players such a boost and helps them out so much.”

“I encourage them to entertain the crowd but also remind them that they have to concerntarte for the full duration of the match.

“There are some defensive areas we still need to work on, but tonight I am happy, so far so good.”

Fijian captain Mira Sahib was proud of his sides effort and respected the opponents that they faced tonight.

“We tried our best but their goals just kept coming. They are very skilful and quick and a tough team to compete against.

“When the scores were locked 4-4 at halftime we were told to just give it everything we’ve got and we tried our best.

“But we are not out of the tournament yet, maybe luck will be on our side and results might go our way.”

OFC Day 3 : Tahiti score improbable come from behind victory

Tahiti scored an amazing 3-2 victory over New Zealand on match day three of the OFC Futsal Championships in Suva, Fiji.

Tahiti were trailing 2-1 with one minute and forty seconds to play before Michel Maihuri scored two goals in the space of 90 seconds to clinch the win in dramatic circumstances.

The game began at a breakneck speed with Tahiti scoring after two minutes through Romeo Patira before New Zealand equalized just five seconds later care of Joshua Martin.

The remainder of the first half was a cagey tense affair with both sides creating good chances but unable to convert them into goals.

Marvin Eakins looked like he had clinched the winner for New Zealand when his finish put the kiwis in front with two minutes left on the clock.

But the Tahitian side – playing at their first ever OFC Futsal championship – were not done and Maihuri scored the equalizer with 1.40 left on the clock.

The celebrations were intense from the Tahitian bench but they were nothing compared to the jubilation shown nine seconds from time when Maihuri headed home his second of the night to steal an improbable victory.

The Tahiti coaching staff were near speechless after the win and head coach Rani Bea stated that he had never given up.

“That was our game. Yesterday we did not play our game but today we showed what we can do. We are still alive in this competition.”

“I always believed. The last two minutes I brought on my four best players because I believed we could do it, and in this moment I am so happy.”

“When the goal came I thought of the country and everyone who we have done so proud. I am just so happy.”

“Tonight we will celebrate but tomorrow we will be back to work.”

New Zealand Coach Erkin Osman was bitterly disappointed with the loss and said the side missed too many chances early in the game.

“We created 25 or so chances and only converted two. You can’t afford to do that.”

“Going 2-1 up with a minute to go, we should have been able to hold on, but we weren’t desperate enough.”

“I put our best defenders on at the end to shut up shop but they still got in behind us, I’m very disappointed.”

OFC Day 3 : Vanuatu strike eleven in Matchday Three

Vanuatu smashed their way to the largest win of the OFC Futsal Championships in Fiji, beating New Caledonia 11-1in the opening game of match day three.

Vanuatu coach Marcellino Barthelemy had asked for more clinical finishing from his players following a host of missed chances in their opening two games against Tuvalu and New Zealand.

His request was met by five different players who all found the score sheet for Vanuatu starting with standout performer Derek Malas – 40 seconds into the match.

Goals soon followed to Siardon Mera Talkanamal (2), Jack Vira Ala (4), Louis Dominique (2), Malas, and Sean Wowut Fanai.

New Caledonia managed a consolation goal 15 minutes into the first half but it was a day to forget for Coach Eric Michalak and his squad as nothing fell their way.

Vanuatu looked a re-energized, combative unit and bounced back from yesterday’s heartbreaking last minute loss to New Zealand in the best possible way.

Coach Marcellino Barthelemy re-affirmed his statement yesterday that their tournament is not over.

“I expect more every day and I know that we can still play better than that,” he said.

“I was really happy with the finishing today and I thought we took all our opportunities well.”

“But I know we can still raise it a level, specifically defensively. But I am very happy.”

OFC : Sahib leads Futsal side

Being a young skipper does not deter Mira Sahib from thinking like a veteran as he leads the national side into the Vodafone FUTSAL Oceania Football Confederation World Cup play-offs which started last night.Fiji played New Caledonia in its opening match and the rugged Suva defender has been given the nod by coach Intiaz Khan to lead Fiji’s campaign and despite being only 24-years old. He has a lot of experience in the code.

Sahib is the only survivor from the side which took part in the competition in 2004.

“I am very proud to be named captain and this is my first time to be skipper of the national side.”

Sahib said the team was like a family and the bond in the players made his job easier.

“The bond among the players is very strong,” he said. “Their spirits are high.”

However, he has taken caution that his side, despite being the hosts, have not played any international matches in their build-up.

“We haven’t been tested and this is what will happen when the tournament starts.”

Khan said Sahib was appointed because of his experience, among other factors.

“He played in the last tournament and has the respect of other players,” Khan said.

Fiji team: Alvin Avinesh, Arvindra Naidu Azmat Begg, Imtiaz Begg, Dinesh Mudaliar, Sandeep Nair, Kamal Hassan, Wasim Ali, Siga Ali, Ashish Chand Vikash Prasad, Mira Hussein Sahib.
