Coach Victor Waiia said the lineup is set and now waiting confirmation by Solomon Islands Football Federation.

Waiia said he brought in one replacement to strengthen one of the weak areas he saw in the team. Lenson Bisili replaces Alfred Punguika.

He said: “The new inclusion in the team was not a new face. He’s been a regular show-up in futsal.”

The names, subject to Solomon Islands Football Federation confirmation: Elliot Ragomo (Captain), Jack Whetney, Ron Ginio, James Egeta, Lenson Bisili, Jenan Kapu, Micah Lea’alafa, Junior Kogua, Philip Houtarau, Moffat Sikwa’ae, Stanley Puairana,Alfred Lioka Junior, Francis Lafai and Samuel Osifelo.

Winter State League Round 9 Review

The Futsal Winter State league entered round nine on a busy night at the Sports Halls at Sydney Olympic Park. With a Concert and a NRL fixture parking and the traffic caught a few sides by surprise with some sides starting with only four players. Tonight’s matches saw a few sides all but confirm their place in the top four while there are still a few sides in the men’s vying for the remaining spots.

In the Women’s action

In our first match of the night fourth placed Inner West Allstars took on third place Liverpool Fusion and with both sides running late both sides started with 4 players till the remaining members arrived. This was a fairly even battle but a Aurelie Gauthier hat-trick to help Inner west to an important five-three victory which means they need a win our draw next week to ensure a finals birth. Fusion remain in fourth and if they had a extra player the result may have been a different story.

Top of the table Sydney Tragic were in action against the bottom placed Dural Warriors, With Tragic at nearly full strength and Dural with no subs it was going to be a big ask for the Dural girls. Tragic cruised to a comfortable six-nil result which leaves both sides remaining in the same positions.

Fifth placed Sydney City needed a result against second place Quake a win would see the race to the final semi final spot go down to the wire with Inner West, while Quake were still a sniff of winning the minor premiership if Tragic happen to slip up in their final fixture. Both sided played some quality Futsal and some of the passing and movement of the ball was a pleasure to watch. Quake took the lead when Leesa Thomson found the net midway through the first half. Sydney City came fired up in the second to draw level thanks to a nice Jodie Bain effort. With ten minutes left in the game it was there for the taking and Quake took their chance when Clare Walsh sealed the win to wrap up he points for the Quake Girls. The result means Sydney City must win and score a few goals to have any hope of making the finals.

In the Men’s action

The fifth placed Dural Warriors took on ninth placed Northern Beaches. Dural warriors took advantage of Northern Beaches only having four men at the start of the match and produced two quick goals. Dural played some nice Futsal and for the second successive week produced an emphatic eight-nil victory with all Dural players getting on the score sheet this was a great team effort.

First placed Sydney Benfica took on eleventh placed Parramatta Blues. Benfica didn’t have it their own way against a physical young Blues outfit. However Sydney Benfica showed why they are currently sitting at the top of the table with some goals at key moments in the match which was enough for them to take the spoils. Parramatta will take a lot away from that performance as they made the top side work hard for their five-two result.

Match of the night saw sixth placed Commodores take on second place Quake. With a number of key personnel missing for Quake it was a good opportunity for Commodores to get a vital victory which would see them stay in contention for a top four finish. Both sides played some entertaining Futsal as it was end to end a real nail bitter. Quake took the points late on with a goal to Ashley Hasthibeer to secure the three-two victory over the unlucky Commodores. Commodores must win their remaining matches to be any hope of making the top four.

Inner West Allstars took on Sydney City Eagles in another very exciting match up. With both sides still in contention for a top four finish everything was on the line. Both sides started strongly with the game flowing end to end and the challengers flew in as there was a lot of passion in this encounter. In the end Sydney City kept their slim finals hopes alive with a five-two victory, both side will be desperate to win their remaining fixtures and hope that someone slips up to be a chance of a finals birth.

Last match of the night was the third placed Plumpton taking on seventh place West City Crusaders side. With some West City players failing to show up West City were left with only four men for the whole match this was a hard ask against one of this season most consistent sides in this competition. Plumpton cruised in first gear for most of the night and ran out comfortable eight-nil victors over a gallant Crusaders side.

Futsal4all Updates

The Futsal4all Admin is away until the 21st of July 2008, so updates to the main news page of the site will happen much less often during that time.

If you have news you want to get out there in the meantime, please put it on the forum directly, and we’ll get everything back up to date around the 21st.

Now for some stats to tide you over…

We’ve been running about 6 weeks so far, and with only word of mouth we’ve clocked up 2600 visit last month. July has seen an average of 150 visits a day to the site, and growing (likely as more people become aware of us).

88% of our visitors still use Internet Explorer, and only 2% of our visitors use a Mac.

We get a lot of hits via the NSW Youth League Forum (primarily an Outdoor forum), the NSW Futsal Forum and an increasing number from FutsalPlanet. Once we contact all futsal sites and clubs and get our name out there we’ll see hits from a wider range of places.

Thanks to everyone so far who has contributed to the site :)

Soccer stars receive grant (NSW)

SCONE Grammar School students Aidan Beiboer and Tom Reddie recently received the exciting news that they were successful in their application for a YAPA grant.

They applied for the grant to enable them to organise and run a five-a-side indoor soccer competition during the school holidays.

The students came up with the idea after seeing the futsal competition at the PCYC in Muswellbrook.

A recent survey of secondary school students undertaken by the Upper Hunter Shire Council showed that there was a lot of interest in indoor soccer (futsal), and that students didn’t have the time or resources to get to Muswellbrook every week to play.

Aidan and Tom are hoping that the competition in the school holidays will spark enough interest in the sport that a summer competition can get underway for 2008/09.

“It would be great to have the soccer equivalent of twilight hockey so that soccer players can compete all year round in Scone.

“It will give us a chance to play against people of different ages and keep improving our skill level,” Aidan said.

Any secondary school students who would like to get a team of five to seven players together for the competition on Wednesday, July 9, should call Nicky Western on 0414 806 074.

2008 FIFA World Cup Preview from the ACT

The much anticipated FIFA Futsal World Cup is nearly upon us, with the tournament taking place in Brazil later this year. Preparation for the event is in full swing, with all venues and teams competing having already being confirmed. This World Cup will be the largest yet, with 20 teams competing after a massive 89 countries attempted to qualify. Although the Australian side narrowly missed out on qualification (this is the first time Australia has not qualified for the Futsal World Cup), people will still have plenty of reasons to watch the event with this tournament shaping up to be the best yet.

Twenty nations will be split up into four groups of five teams, with countries that are highly ranked being separated as best as possible. The final draw will be announced on Thursday, the 10th of June, before competition commences on the 30th of September. No matter which particular countries are favoured by the draw, it is indisputable that the Brazilians will be the team to beat in this event, with the nation having a proud and successful history in both futsal and football.

In Brazil, variations of football such as futsal and beach soccer are highly popular and are used to develop the skills of up and coming players. A surprising number of current elite Brazilians footballers played futsal at a young age, with this list including superstar such as Ronaldinho and Robinho. Brazil is currently rated as the number one international futsal side in the world, with Spain and Italy ranked second and third respectively. The impact of Brazil’s home ground advantage combined with the country’s brilliant side will make the nation deserving favourites for the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Whether the winner of this prestigious tournament will be the brilliant Brazilians, the terrific Thais, the invincible Italians or the Sublime Spaniards, this competition promises to be a terrific event. In Australia, viewing is likely to be available on SBS and or pay TV networks. Until then, everybody can look forward to September 30 and pick a team to support.

The teams that will compete in 7th FIFA World Championship of Futsal are as follows:

Asia: Iran, Thailand, Japan and China.
North America: Guatemala, Cuba and USA.
South America: Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Africa: Libya and Egypt.
Europe: Spain, Italy, Russia, Portugal and Ukraine.
Oceania: Solomon Islands.
