Illawarra Vikings increase numbers (NSW)
August 31, 2008
Registration at the Shellharbour City Stadium have gone through the roof. with over 50 teams registered and still a few from last year to come Vikings will field the biggest Futsal indoor competition since the 1990’s.
At the 2009 Vikings National Championships, held in Sydney, at last we will have teams representing the South Coast as the Southern NSW Vikings. we will select teams in all male age groups from 9 years to 16 years of age, including youth and open men.
Whilst in the female component we will have to wait and see if we can select some age groups. It would be nice if we could nominate 12-14-16 -Young women and women. When you read this and you may be able to help us with increasing our numbers we would set aside court space to start female competitions.
In the senior mens competitions we will have the usual 32 teams being the maximum we can fit in at the stadium. we are currently waiting for confirmation from Unanderra Hockey Stadium for court space to accomodate more teams.
Coaches and Managers dont forget to apply for a state team as soon as possible so we can start selections.
To all the people that have helped a big thank you from Bob Raso and Gina Jones.

Hawke’s Bay versus International All Stars (NZ) - Updated
August 28, 2008
HB Futsal launches the 2008 futsal season on Friday 22nd August with an exhibition match featuring some of New Zealand’s top futsal players.
** Update : Hawkes Bay won the exhibition match 7-5. Thanks to everyone in the crowd of 300 who came to the Hawke’s Bay v All Stars exhibition on August 22nd. A great way to kickstart the season - you can see photos from the big night here. A special thanks to Carlos and his team for making it such a special event. **
The match at Pettigrew Green Arena is between Hawke’s Bay and the International All Stars.
The Hawke’s Bay team includes players from Hawke’s Bay United’s NZFC team, as well as top young players from HB Futsal’s premier league.
The All Stars are lead by Waikato-based Brazilian professional and former New Zealand futsal coach, Carlos Farias and a team of South American and African futsal experts.
Futsal is the FIFA approved version of five-aside indoor soccer. It is the world’s fastest growing indoor sport and is played by millions of players in over 100 countries.
The current world futsal champions are Spain and the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup is due to be held in Brazil next month. The tournament will attract a television audience of millions worldwide.
The name “futsal” comes from the merging of the Spanish/Portuguese words for football (futbol or futebol) and the Spanish word for indoor (salon or sala).
Futsal is a fast-paced game played on a basketball sized court using a low rebound ball, often with Brazilian samba music playing as a soundtrack.
Soccer superstars such as Ronaldinho, Messi, Pele, Zico and Cristiano Ronaldo all learnt to play soccer by starting out in futsal.
The game demands quick reflexes and promotes fast thinking and pinpoint passing and shooting, with players touching the ball on average twelve times more per game than in outdoor soccer.
As a result, players develop close individual ball skills and tricks very quickly, making it an exciting game for young players.
Currently HB Futsal has around 200 players enrolled in Thursday night children’s and adult’s leagues, which are run in partnership with Hawke’s Bay United Academy.
HB Futsal also run schools tournaments in November and December as well as an all-ages one day tournament at the NZ Games at Pettigrew Green Arena on 21st September.
Players and teams can sign up for all 2008 leagues and tournaments before and after the exhibition match.
HB Futsal are delighted to be able to bring this unique sporting event to the Hawke’s Bay public. Spokesman Paul Toohey is particularly pleased to have a player of Farias’s quality on board. “Carlos has played futsal at the highest level in Brazil, in front of crowds of 40,000, twice a week” says Toohey. “His technique and ball control are amazing. What he can’t do with a ball probably isn’t worth doing.”

August 28, 2008
The young lads of the Solomon Islands National Futsal team, Solomon Kurukuru, will fly right into the history books when they leave for the Futsal FIFA World Cup in Brazil on the 2nd of September.
The Futsal sport was only introduced a few years back, however, the Kurukurus have done Solomon Islands proud by qualifying for the World Cup.
With the youngest being only 17, Solomon Islands will come up against Futsal giants, Brazil and Russia.
The Oceania Champions will take off from Honiara, for two weeks of training camp in Australia, before they head off to the Futsal FIFA World Cup to begin on September the 30th.
Team Manager, Mr. Simon Dyer, confirmed that the Futsal team will spend the two weeks at the Dural Sports and Leisure Centre in Sydney “to allow the boys to train and expose themselves to an international standard Futsal court which Solomon Islands does not have.”
While in Sydney the team will also receive support from Dural Sports Centre and be able to play friendly matches with other Australian teams.
Team Kurukuru will then leave Australia on the 11th of September for Brazil to continue their training camp before the start of the Futsal FIFA World Cup.
“The two weeks prior to the games in Brazil is very important for the team. This is to allow them to get use to the environment, the food and everything else. This will also allow then to continue with training and play some more friendly matches,” Dyer explained.
Dyer also highlighted that the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) and the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC)have been working together with the National Squad to give the team the best preparation for the World Cup.
Solomon Kurukuru plays Cuba in its Opening Pool match on October 1st and then will come up against World Champions, Brazil on October 2nd. They will then play Japan on the 5th and then will play the World’s third best, Russia on the 7th.
