Capital Futsal – for the good of the game (NZ)

Capital Futsal is a family of futsal leagues, academies, and programs committed to providing the best that there is in futsal training and competitions throughout the Wellington region. Capital Futsal is established as a Trust (not a profit making private company), with the goal to promote the game of Futsal in Wellington and New Zealand.

With approximately 600 players registered, tournaments are played at our dedicated Futsal facility at the Hataitai Sports Park in Ruahine Street, Kilbirnie. Men’s leagues play on Monday and Wednesday nights with women’s leagues on Tuesdays and Thursday nights. Business House leagues run during the 12-2pm slots and youth leagues after school. In the near future we’ll also be starting our Corporate Futsal Cup. The opportunity to challenge your opposition firms to lunchtime battles on the Futsal Court. Sponsorship opportunities are available for each of the leagues.

The park is also used for Womens Roller Derby, as a social community hall for migrant communities (several migrant teams play in leagues), kids birthday parties and as an indoor practice and game facility for local schools and outdoor football clubs (due to the poor condition of the outdoor fields and the cold rainy Wellington winters)

Youth leagues are starting after school from the 9th September, they will go for approx. 4 hours each night with 400 registered players.

The Wellington Phoenix/Capital Futsal Futsal Kick-Start is starting soon. These are 2-3 day Academies during the Spring School Holidays (end of September) and will have visits and displays by the A-league’s Wellington Phoenix players in the curriculum.

Capital Futsal is also home to Wellington’s New Zealand’s Championship side that competed at the National Selection tournament in Auckland during November last year and won the New Zealand Futsal National Championship Cup. Two members of that successful squad (Greg O’Connor and Victor Zaia) were selected for the NZ National Futsal side, the FutsAllwhites that competed at the Oceania Qualifiers for the right to represent Oceania at the FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Capital Futsal is the only “true” futsal provider in the Wellington region. For more information: http://www.futsal.net.nz

Futsal Tournament kicks off Women’s season in Tahiti

While Spring is traditionally the time of year reserved for soaring temperatures, hard grounds and keenly contested pre-season programmes for Tahiti’s Division Federale, it is the men’s female counterparts capturing all the attention.

Ten of Tahiti’s clubs entered their senior women’s teams in the futsal pre-season tournament opener last Saturday at Fautaua sports facility. Paea – a non-affiliated club that usually takes part in inter-district competitions – was invited to take part.

The tournament features three match days – August 16, August 30 (at Outumaoro) before concluding with a finals day on September 20 (venue to be decided).

The senior women’s club season commences on October 1.

Bonds boy really can play

He’s the soccer kid who has Australia talking. The boy who strips to his Bonds while juggling a football, eventually catching it in his underpants.

At South Sydney High School, Maroubra, the Bonds boy is simply known as Kane Edwards.

While he may be a magician with the football, this 17-year-old can actually play. He represents St George under-18s as a right winger and has ambitions of playing at a high level.

Yesterday he took time out from his HSC trials to fly to Brisbane, where he walked the catwalk and again performed his tricks for Bonds.

Kane’s schoolmates think he’s a champion and so do his Saints teammates. And he’s in favour with the girls – so much so that he’s been flooded with invites for end-of-year formals. And they’re not just from the southside, but schools north of the bridge as well.

“I don’t even know them,” he sheepishly admits.

A friend told Kane about the Bonds ad audition and he eventually beat 31 others for the part. Kane revealed that it was a school friend who sent him a text message that there was an audition at Fox Studios for the Bonds ad.

“I’d always juggled a ball since I was young but it was about three years ago that I started football freestyle (doing tricks). It’s an online competition where you place videos on YouTube,” he said.

“When I went to the first audition they wanted someone who could remove their clothes (except underpants) while juggling the ball. I didn’t think I had much chance. I was called back and there were even more people being tested.

“This time they asked for a special trick. I caught it in my undies first go. What else I did was my own idea. I was hoping I might get a side part initially. I was surprised when I got the main role.”

Bonds looked at 32 people for the role – even some from outside Australia. A Bonds representative said yesterday that apart from the fact Kane was a wonder boy with his tricks, he was a fresh talent, down to earth, had a great sense of humour and was very energetic.

Kane revealed he spends three hours some days working on his creative skills with the ball. “When I have a long session like that, I’ll take the next day off,” he said.

“It’s something I might be able to teach people when I finish school. I’ve certainly been giving it a lot of thought.”

Tricks aside, Kane’s burning desire is to play professional football. As a rep player with Sydney Olympic and now with Saints, Kane can’t wait for the weekends when he uses his speed and skills on the flank to torment defenders.

“I am not a noted goalscorer but I’ve been involved in a lot of assists. I enjoy that,” he said.

The season comes to an end for Saints when they play Granville at the weekend. After that, Kane will turn his attention to Futsal (indoor soccer) – and that’s a sport where he can really use his magic.

Futsal boys ready to fire (TAS)

The Tasmanian Futsal Zebras under-10 side is just one of 25 teams from the State that will attend the national school Futsal titles in Dandenong, Victoria, from September 28-October 1.

The teams will consist of players in the 10-19 years age group and the touring party will comprise more than 200 players from around the state.

The Zebras under-10s are part of the Vikings Futsal Academy and are coached by former Hobart Zebras stars Romeo Frediani, 37, and Sergio Pace, 45.

If the youngsters are anywhere near as skilful as these two former players, they will do very well at the tournament, although the indoor version of the game of soccer is somewhat different to the outdoor game.

“There was no Futsal when Romeo and I grew up and learned to play soccer,” said Pace. “So it was new to us when we started to coach this team.

“It’s got its advantages and disadvantages. They play on a smaller pitch, but they get to know each other’s style of play very well because of that and, in certain aspects of the game, it improves their skills.

“They do have to adapt to the outside game because there’s a lot more space.

“Their close control is improved, as is their teamwork.”

Frediani said the team competed in a Brisbane tournament last Easter and finished seventh in a pool of 16 and was very competitive.

“They only lost two games and the scores were very close, with there being only a goal the difference quite often,” he said.

“Some of the other teams had been together for three or four years.

“In the coming Dandenong tournament, the competition will probably be a bit stronger, seeing it’s more of a national tournament than the Brisbane one.”

Pace said that confidence was high for the coming tournament.
