Local boys selected to tour (NSW)

Three local mates have been selected to play in the Vikings 15 years boys Australian Futsal (indoor soccer) squad to tour the United Kingdom later this year.

Layton Barton of Bangalow (middle), Tim Knight of Federal (left) and Sean Spencer of Alstonville (right) are certainly no strangers to high level sports competition.

Each of them has also competed at either State or Australian level athletics championships and for the last three years they have been travelling together all over NSW and Queensland playing representative State League Football (Soccer).

However to be selected to play for Vikings Australia is a great honour and a crowning achievement.

Last year the three boys, then aged 14, joined a youth (16-19) Futsal ‘5 a side’ team in the Alstonville competition to improve their ball skills and speed. Their local club team, called the Wizards, won the minor premiership and the boys were chosen to represent the Far North Coast NSW.

The rep team had two other Byron Shire boys, Daniel Musgrave and Craig Barnham from the Ocean Shores club and two boys from Grafton.

The rep team was coached by Daniel’s dad, Ray Musgrave, under the watchful eye of local ex-Australian player and Futsal CEO, David Major.

At Easter they competed at the Australian and Pacific Regional Championships where they won the Vikings Futsal Silver challenge against teams from New Zealand and Australia.

Two other local Byron Shire players were also selected into the under 13 boys Australian team.

They are Desan Conners-Hart and Toby Barton, who is Layton’s younger brother.

Futsal SA Open Men Grand Finals at Magill Sports Centre

Tuesday night saw two exciting Futsal Grand Finals of high quality in the Super and Premier league at the Magill Sports Centre in the east of Adelaide, in fact Futsal was definitely the winner here as the four finalists gave their all to be crowned the new champions for the Winter competition in their respective league.

Premier League Grand Final

Last Resort 7 (D. Passaturo 4, M. Staltari 2, Andrew Dickson)
Ole 4 (John Pitali 2, Paul Fleming, Arn Doan)

Defending Champions Last Resort, trailed for half of the game and with the score line of 3-0 decided to come out and play with an excellent come back in the second period to win another Championship trophy, which makes it 5 in a row for the orange and black team.

Ole a new team this season earned their place in the final by beating The Outlaws in the semi final last week and continued with that good form in the Grand final with two early goals from John Pitan and another from Paul Fleming.

Last Resort who were missing the services of Mauro Beron in the final due to outdoor postponements last weekend weekend had to miss out and play in the rescheduled match on the same night as the Grand Final and wasn’t lookin to great for them in the first half.

Ole of course were a worthy opponent and could have upset the defending Champions, but the experienced goal poaching skills of Dario Pessaturo and the speed and dazzling skills of Mario Staltari started the recovery onslaught with a couple of great goals to put them back in contention and had Ole baffled for most of the second half scoring only one more goal through Arn Doan.

In the end Dario netted four times and Mario got two with youngster Craig Dickson making it seven to clinch the Double once again.

Most valuable player in the Grand Final went to none other than the captain Dario Pessaturo for his 4 goals and his determination to get his team back up in the second half when it didnt look like so in the first..Well done to both teams on an excellent final.

Super League Grand Final

The Wanderers 3 (Alan Evans, Ross Osmon, Scott Koehne)
The Blues 4 (Rick Capaldo 2, Sam Condo, Richard Hrovatin)

The second Grand Final of the night was the Super league Grand Final between The Blues who have been knocking on the door for a couple of seasons to make the grand Final and the skillful new team from the south of Adelaide The Wanderers who were admitted in the Super league this season due to one team pulling out.

Both teams just like the Premier league final marched on to the court to the tune of the FIFA anthem and following the two Referees Brendon Skinner and John Greco to the middle of the court. As soon as they faced the big crowd the applause was enormous.

The Referee tossed the coin and the match started with a high tempo and continued right through to the end. Both teams tested each other early with the Wanderers who were finely tuned getting the first goal in the first 5 minutes through Ross Osmon (1-0) who combined well with Scott Koehne to slot home.

A few minutes later and after a few attacks on goals Rick Capaldo managed to got the equaliser (1-1) from an acute angle on the left wing and the crowd went wild. The game continued with high intensity from end to end, both teams displaying good Futsal skills and great team work at times keeping both goalkeepers busy, but for the alertness and gutsy display of the Blues Goalie Daniel Ricciotti kept the Wanderers’ Con Borg, Scott Koehne and Ross Osman at bay many a time with some great saves.

Sam Condo put the blues ahead (2-1) and Scott Koehne for the wanderers who was threatening all game finally got his goal and the equaliser (2-2). The Wanderers had their chances from Koehne and Borgy, but again Ricciotti was equal to the task narrowing the angles and putting his body on the line.

Ricky Capaldo got his second goal from another acute angle to make it 3-2, but the Wanderers Alan Evans from a good one two with Borg made it (3-3). The match looked like it was going into extra time but it was Richard Hrovatin who got the winning goal late for the Blues to clinch the double and crowned the Champions of the Magill Super League.

Most valuable Player of the Grand Final went to the Blues goalkeeper Daniel Ricciotti

Both teams should be congratulated for the way they played the game and the referees Brendon, John and third official Giancarlo did an excellent job officiating.  Thanks to all those who decorated the stadium for the occassion.

Thank you to all teams that participated last season. New season starts on the 19th of August

Fifa World Cup – Meet the Team : Solomon Islands

The past
Like so many other nations in Oceania, the Solomons were overshadowed for a long time by Australia, the region’s undisputed powerhouse until their move to the Asian Football Confederation in 2006. It was Australia who represented Oceania at Chinese Taipei 2004, where they lost all three of their group games. The Solomons, after fighting successfully through the Oceania qualifiers in Suva, Fiji, will be hoping to do better.

The present
In this, the Solomons’ first appearance at a FIFA finals tournament of any kind, they will be relying on the goalscoring ability of Micah Lea’alafa and Elliot Ragomo, who scored 22 goals between them in the qualifying tournament in Suva. Their play is not only about all-out attack, however, and they showed their tactical organization and patience in the crucial qualifying game, a 4-2 win over eventual runners-up Tahiti.

The future
Coach Victor Wai’ia knows that his team will face a very stern initiation in Brazil, but believes that his team has qualities that will stand them in good stead amongst the world’s futsal elite. “We now our team does not have the most skilful individual players, but we play with heart and are very technical in defence,” he commented. “We have ten players on the same level, and this has helped us.”

Facts

Key players
Micah Lea’alafa, Elliot Ragomo, Jack Wetney

Qualifying statistics
The Solomon Islands claimed first place in the Oceania qualifying tournament in Suva, Fiji, winning five games and losing one. They scored a total of 41 goals in the event, conceding 19.

The numbers game
12 – The number of goals the Solomons scored in their final game of the qualifiers, a 12-0 win over Tuvalu.
