Kurukuru allowed in

The Kurukuru national futsal (indoor soccer) team have been given special permission to train in Honiara’s Multipurpose Hall.

Honiara City Council allowed this so as not to disrupt the team’s preparation for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil next month.

The council closed the hall on Wednesday for what it said was an urgent assessment of repairs needed and to improve hygiene.

The council earlier retook possession of the hall and surrounding areas from National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands.

It said rent was not paid and the building was not maintained and facilities poor. The hall will be reopened on Wednesday, the council said.

Schools Futsal Hits Taree (NSW)

Monday the 4th August saw Saxby Stadium, Taree hosted the latest Northern NSW Regional Schools Futsal Tournament. 16 school teams competed across 4 categories showcasing their futsal skills in over 32 matches on the day. It was a cool start for the first matches at 9am but the Saxby Stadium soon warmed up with dozens of high scoring matches.

The under 16 girls division was very competitive with St Clair’s getting some good results early in the day. Bulahdelah Central School and Chatham High School also showed that they were not to be taken lightly with some impressive play. Come finals time though it was the consistent St Clair’s High School to line up against Bulahdelah High School. A close first half saw neither team gain too much of an advantage. In the second half the team from St Clair’s showed why they will be a force at the State titles streaking away to win the final 3 goals to 1.

The under 19 boy’s category was also fiercely contested. Taree High School showed why they were the tournament favorites early on with some silky smooth skills and great team goals. Again Chatham High School were not to be out done and fought their way into the grand final with some hard fought results.

With both sides already qualified for the state titles the pressure was off and players took the chance to express themselves. In a great display of futsal, Taree High School ran out winners with a score of six goals to one over Chatham High.

The under 14 Boys division was a tight race seeing St Clair’s Chatham and Wingham High Schools all pushing to represent their region at Newcastle later in the month.

It came down to St Clair’s and Wingham facing off in the third grand final of the day and this one did not disappoint. Keeping with the days trend it was a high scoring affair with eight goals in total. In the end there could only be one winner and on the day Wingham High School were crowned Champions of the region with a six to two win.

The under 16 boys division provided some great matches over the day and was very well supported by the crowed that turned out. Wingham, St Clair’s, Chatham and Taree High Schools al earning a spot in the semi finals. Semi final 1 saw Wingham High take on St Clair’s in the tightest match of the day. The two teams could not be separated until the very last minute when a goal was awarded by the match referee that saw Wingham book a place in the grand final and also a place in the State titles.

In semi final 2 Chatham high school took on Taree High. The game promised to be one of high intensity and it didn’t disappoint. It was a gallant effort from Taree High School but ion the end it was Chatham High School running away with it five goals to one.

With both teams qualified for the state titles it was again a chance for both teams to express themselves. In a very entertaining game it was Wingham High School eventually taking the title with a well earned two to nil victory.

Congratulations to all players that participated. The standard was very high and we look forward to seeing the teams from the Taree region take on schools from the rest of Northern NSW at the state titles held in Newcastle on the 18th and 19th of August.
