Veteran Macor unsure whether he wants more (ACT)
Belconnen veteran Danny Macor will make a decision on his playing future after Sunday’s grand final against long-time rival Canberra FC.
The striker, who turned his back on premier league earlier in the season, said his future in the top grade remained up in the air.
Macor said a busy off-season schedule with the national futsal team had burnt him out.
”It took a toll physically and by the time I started playing this year I was burnt out,” the prolific goal-scorer said.
”So I walked away and played in a lower division for a while, where I wasn’t training all the time and just having an easier time.”
His departure sparked a run of bad luck for Belconnen, which was risking a finals spot.
That was until coach Steve Forshaw asked him to return.
”Danny’s a very good player with a lot of experience and nous,” Forshaw said.
”He’s a lively character and what he brings to the team boosts their morale.”
Belconnen had lost three consecutive matches when Macor returned. He orchestrated the end of the slump and began guiding the team towards Sunday’s grand final.
Forshaw was ”delighted” Macor returned but understood why he left.
”I didn’t want him to go in the first place, I knew it would leave a hole in the squad, ” the coach said.
”But I respected his decision.”
After nearly a month away from premier league, Macor missed the sport’s top level.
”I was happy Steve called and invited me back. I don’t think I’m the difference, but I give the players around me confidence. I love doing that,” Macor said.

Kurukuru Score convincing win over Maccabi
The Solomon Kurukuru trounced local Sydney side Maccabi 12-3 in their characteristic flamboyant style last night at the Dural Sports and Leisure Centre. It was the second practice match on tour for the Solomon boys, with coach Victor Wai’ia once again fielding an experimental line-up in order to best prepare for the World Cup.
As with Saturday’s game against New South Wales, the focus of the team was again on defence. Earlier in the day the squad welcomed technical advisor Scott Gilligan, the current Australian coach and former Tahiti Technical Advisor, who brings a wealth of experience to Kurukuru. He took the boys through a special training session on defensive techniques earlier in the day.
“I think that’ it’s a great opportunity for me and it’s a pleasure to be involved with a such a group of young and talented players,” he said.
“We only had a half-hour session together before playing Maccabi and they picked things up really well. There was a great improvement defensively between the game against new South Wales and tonight. After two weeks in Brazil I think they’ll improve a lot.”
Five unanswered goals in the first fifteen minutes as good as guaranteed Kurukuru the victory, although Maccabi hit back twice late in the half to reduce the deficit. One of their goals came from a penalty kick that Maccabi earned after Solomons conceded five free kicks in play, something that Wai’ia regretted.
“It was a shame about the amount of fouls that we gave, but it was good for the boys to learn now not to over-commit in tackles while still being defensively strong.” Goals continued to flow for Kurukuru in the second half, although their ambition to keep their own net free of the ball was not met as Maccabi struck a consolation goal shortly after Solomons had established an 11-2 lead.
The goal of the match came from Kukukuru goalkeeper Junior Kogua who ventured from the back of the court and passed to Philip Houtarau, who then found Moffat Sikwa’ai. The ball was then squared to Kogua who cracked a shot passed the Maccabi keeper.
Today the team completed their final gym and pool session in Sydney, before leaving for Brazil on Thursday evening. Winger Francis Lafai said that the team has enjoyed being in Australia, but that, ‘the weather is so cold. But it’s been good here because we can watch video footage of our practice matches and learn from our mistakes. I’m very exited because I’ve always dreamt about playing Futsal in Brazil.’

Sydney Benfica’s Kevin Oliveira Trials For Sydney FC Youth (NSW)
Sydney Benfica FC would like to wish Kevin Oliveira the best of luck, as he trials for Sydney FC youth.
Kevin is an integral member of Benfica’s youth side along with a host of other young guns in the side. Coach, Joseph Pinto will be hoping to keep all his boys on the court this year. Mr Pinto has proven success with the squad, winning the Youth title two years ago and State titles last year.
Whilst the average age of the squad is approx 17.5 years old, they will supplement Benfica’s men’s squad throughout the season in order to gain experience.
Confidence is high, but they know the likes of Dural Warriors, Enfield Rovers, Northern Tigers and Co. will be hard to stop this year.

Local boys make the Vikings Futsal Tour (NSW)
A trio of talented local mates have just been selected to play in the Vikings 15 years boys Australian Futsal squad to tour the United Kingdom later this year.
Layton Barton of Bangalow, Tim Knight of Federal and Sean Spencer of Alstonville are no strangers to high level sports competition.
Each of the boys has also competed at either State or Australian level Athletics Championships, and for the last 3 years have also been travelling together all over NSW and Queensland playing Representative State League Football, however to be selected to play for Vikings Australia is a great honor and a crowning achievement.
Goalkeeper Layton loves the game. ‘Futsal really teaches you to react very quickly on the small court,’ he says. ‘The strikers come at you really fast and a shot on goal can come from anywhere.’
The boys local club team, the Wizards, won the minor premiership and the 3 boys were chosen to represent the Far North Coast NSW.
The Rep team had two other Byron Shire boys, Daniel Musgrave and Craig Barnham from the Ocean Shores Club and two boys from Grafton.
At Easter they competed at the Australian and Pacific Regional Championships where they won the Vikings Futsal Silver challenge against teams from New Zealand, Tasmania and all over the Australian mainland.
Futsal is very popular in the cities and larger population areas as it can be played indoors in summer and winter competitions irrespective of the weather.
Two other local Byron Shire players were selected into the U13 boys Australian team, Desan Conners-Hart and Toby Barton
The growth of Futsal has been amazing with player numbers doubling each year in all age groups up to men’s and women’s, as the word gets around how fun and exciting the game is.
A new centre opened in Ocean Shores last September and there are currently plans for another new Centre in Byron Bay in time for the summer season. Plans are also in the works for a new Premier League under 19 youth competition between clubs this summer.
It sounds like we’re all going to hear a lot more about Futsal in the future!
