Otago Girls High School outplays all (NZ)

A skilful Otago Girls High School team outplayed all opposition to claim the under-19 title at the national futsal championships in Queenstown.

Briony Barclay, who was captain of the New Zealand Schools team in Brisbane in the October holidays, led her team by example and was ably supported by talented younger players Sam Muirhead, Daytona Helm and Grace Van Turnhout.

Defender Morgan Dalzel and goalie Alyssa Gray added to the classy side, which beat Burnside 4-1 in the final.

Briony has been selected for the Australasian Under-19 side to tour China early next year.

The win in the final was dedicated to soccer player and school friend Sam Hall, who died of cancer earlier in the year.

Otago Boys High School’s under-14 team also won a national title in Queenstown.

Cam Howieson was outstanding throughout the tournament, cleaning up at the back and initiating many drives forward. He also led the scoring (14 goals). Cam was well complemented by Joel Stevens, who collected a number of goals and produced many turnovers with a tremendous work rate.

Lian Lam Sam grew throughout the competition and ended equal with Cam as leading goal-scorer on 14 goals. A big target, he was a headache for opposition defence.

Ryan McGarry was solid at the back and was supported by two able keepers (Tom Stevens and Tyrrell Barringer-Tairi) while Sam Brouwer played well off the bench, and was effective at the back.

Logan Park High School entered four teams in the tournament, with the talented under-19 boys unlucky not to get to the final.

They won their quarterfinal in an exciting game against an impressive St Bedes, 2-1, but because they lost an earlier game against Linwood College by one goal (when they had a flat morning game), they were not able to progress. Linwood went on to win the title and LPHS boys were third.

In the senior boys team, Logan Park had the following players: Seamus Gray, Konyo Yoon, Michael Still (all South Island or NZ Youth representatives), Amos Rouse, Adam Harris, Tom Kenny, Moyad Barnawi and Billy Pullar. David Rucker had been their coach.

The Logan Park intermediate under-16 team improved rapidly, beating Christchurch Boys 4-0 and reaching the quarterfinals.

The Melbourne Futsal League

Football Federation Victoria’s brand new Futsal competition – the Melbourne Futsal League – kicks off next weekend with five clubs from around Melbourne participating.

“This is an exciting new chapter for Futsal in Victoria” said FFV Futsal Business Development Manager, Chris Ryan.

“With the game of Futsal continuing to grow in popularity, we are happy to establish a Futsal league for our junior players and re-affirm our support for the game and its continued development as part of the Football family” says Ryan.

Each club will host a round at their own home venue. In turn, this will provide maximum exposure to the game of Futsal, which is played in all of the Metropolitan Zones. The Melbourne Futsal League provides another avenue for participation in Football and will seek to attract more young players to the game, increasing participation levels at a grassroots level.

The inaugural League will consist of both Under 11 boys and Under 13 boys age categories, with Football Federation Victoria aiming to expand the competition to more age groups in both male and female categories in future seasons.

From a football perspective, the Melbourne Futsal League will also improve and better prepare our current junior players for competitions at State and National level, particularly at the National Futsal Championships.

FFV Talented Player Coordinator Anthony Grima agrees “the League will provide players with the opportunity to play in competitive games more regularly. Futsal is a fast game which improves fitness, passing and positional play. An established league, will provide players with long term benefits and raise the domestic standard of the game as a whole.”

The Melbourne Futsal League comprises affiliated Futsal clubs that have worked closely with Football Federation Victoria to provide the right platform for Futsal’s ongoing development.

The five clubs forming the inaugural league are:

• Victory Fives Futsal Club
• Cobras Futsal Club
• Melbourne Reds Futsal Club
• Victorian Lions Futsal Club
• Australian Futsal Group

Round 1 of the Melbourne Futsal League kicks-off on Sunday 9th November for the Under 11 Boys and Sunday 16th November for the Under 13 Boys.

The first round will be hosted by Australian Futsal Group at Caroline Springs Leisure Centre.

The League season will continue until the end of February 2009.

Under 8’s – 12’s Trials (NSW)

Fustal players unite! If you love the self expression and intensity that Futsal games bring, then our club and training philosophy is for you.

Dulwich Hill FC in partnership with Marrickville Red Devils, are holding trials for the 2009 Junior Development Program.

One team per age group, from Under 8s to Under 12s, will be selected to participate in the program, which is the official development pathway to Dulwich Hill FC representative youth league teams.

Teams will train twice per week under an appointed Dulwich Hill FC coach, who will also attend the teams matches in the Division 1 competitions in the Canterbury Association.

Individual player technical development is promoted during our sessions, which centre around intense 1 v 1 to 6 v 6 situations – just like futsal.

Trials will be held at Steel Park, Illawarra Rd, Marrickville on Sunday November 9th and 16th.

Each session will begin at 11am. Players are to bring boots, shin pads and a water bottle.

Registration fees for the Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s will be $750.00 inc GST and $770.00 inc GST for the Under 11s and Under 12s.

Sydney Benfica FC – 11 Boys State Champions (NSW)

Sydney Benfica FC 11 Boys entered these State Titles knowing that amongst 8 of the 9 players they had successfully won this age group for the past four years. Expectations were high although complacency was a real danger.

Their opening match none more evident as a 3 nil lead evaporated to a young and energetic Western Raiders side Final score 3 all. Whilst the team showed glimpses of magic, their first day could be classed as a little less impressive.

Sunday morning arrived with a top of the table clash between Benfica and Sydney University. The added curve ball that if Benfica lost, the young Western Raiders side could snatch the vital second spot. In stark contrast to the previous days performance, Benfica charged from the onset and ran out winners 7-0. They remained undefeated and qualified first.

Their semifinal match was against Premier League outfit, Hawkesbury Commodores. Benfica’s coach demanded intensity and patience from his players and that is exactly what he got as they ran out 6-0 winners and earnt a spot in the final. Their opposition would once again be Sydney University.

Although they had previously beaten Sydney University, it was known that this would give Uni the extra motivation coming into the final. The boys started where they had left off previously and dominated the match running out 9-1 winners.

The boys played some unbelievable futsal over the weekend and were without doubt deserved winners.
Squad – James McNicol (GK), Michael Trajkovski (C), Dimitri Krideras, Petros Xenos, Steve Kuzmanovski, Michael Houdek, Daniel Bavcangiovski, Justin Lazarevski, Stephen Athanaseris
