12 minute games…. not much game time

    toepoke on November 19th, 2008 6:02 pm

The kids play 9 x 12min round robin games, then semis and finals of 20 minutes duration. So plenty of game time really…

    Paul on November 19th, 2008 7:01 pm

Not really Paul, it equates to 2 1/2 games of (Futsal 2 x 20 min halves). I’d say the kids would feel a little short changed

You obviously don’t know Scott Gilligan…. He’s a good talker and sounds impresive but it reality does very little……. OFC can have him, hell make him the NZ coach all the players will come from Sydney

    toepoke on November 19th, 2008 8:11 pm

How many 10 metre penalties can you fit into a 12 minute game ? lol

    F.SALA on November 19th, 2008 9:32 pm

At $5per player for a two night tournament I don’t think anyone’s going to feel short-changed. And just so you know… the kids asked to play under this ‘lots of short games’ format - we’ve trialled it in the past and they & their parents have asked to do it more. So hopefully they’ll have a good time tonight and no-one in Australia will be too critical or offended!

And no, I don’t know Mr Gilligan, but futsal in this country is quite underdeveloped compared to Australia. Any articles/coaching courses/seminars/dialogue that might be available to us are to my mind, a step in the right direction.

    Paul on November 20th, 2008 5:43 am

underdeveloped ? not surprised if you let children set the game times of 12 minutes ! I’m sure Vikings NZ could help with coaching ?

    F.SALA on November 20th, 2008 6:16 am

F-SALA I think you might be overly critical here. We run plenty of futsal tournaments and leagues with games of normal duration for kids and adults. This one’s a little bit different cause we’ve got very limited court time and the 10 teams all wanted to play each other once. Its a compromise, but one we can live with. For some of these kids, by the way, it will be their first ever game of futsal tonight. Its not a big deal - I was surprised our little tournament even got a mention on this site to be honest. So hopefully you can see where we’re coming from by now…just getting a few schools together to play a futsal tournament is an achievement in itself around this neck of the woods, believe me.

Re: coaching- we’re not Vikings affiliated so it wasn’t really an option for us last time I checked… last course they held here was in ‘07 I believe.

On a positive note, MikeCorringham from NSW came over recently and held excellent two day course Level One Course at Capital Futsal in Wellington.

    Paul on November 20th, 2008 7:33 am

Sounds good Paul keep up the great work ! Mikes been around futsal a long time.

    F.SALA on November 20th, 2008 7:40 am

So the kids are running the sport in New Zealand…. no wonder it’s under developed!!!

Vikings seem to be big in New Zealand why don’t you get them onboard. They have leagues and tournaments all through NZ along with teams traveling and touring.

I read an article on here about the NZ School titles in Queenstown recently … looked quite big plus the word is the Vikings Futsal cup for men and womens was very good.

I also read there is a Brazilian over doing a coaching course in Feb on their website. So why are you trying to do small things on your own when you could do big things with the Vikings?

    toepoke on November 20th, 2008 8:33 am

Toepoke - I guess you like being provocative! Did you read my previous post…I was kind of hoping I’d explained why we went for a short game format for this little competition. Like I said, its a compromise, a one-off, but one we can live with since all our other comps are done the ‘right’ way. So if the kids are running the game - its only for two nights, we’ll survive… For some of them, its their first ever game.

Anyway, there’s plenty to be positive about in NZ. Vikings do a great a job, and so do Capital Futsal, Brazilian Futsal School, East City and hopefully, us.

As for the course in Chch in Feb, we’ll be there.

    thanks

    Paul on November 20th, 2008 9:20 am

Wow, So I’m guessing NZ is like Australia as well… there are 5 groups trying to run Futsal.

Provocative… maybe, but was just a tonge in cheek comment. hey it drew a response.

I’ll give you some advice, don’t let Football fool you into thinking they have the best interest of Futsal in hand. At the end of the day they are Football people and see the “SPORT” of Futsal as nothing more than a training game for Football. In Oz I’ve been involved with the (now) FFA and Vikings and Vikings are streaks ahead. sure there are people who want to knock the tall poppy but I believe it’s more out of envy. Hell I’ve been to meetings where on the agenda it was, How to Bring Down the Vikings….. They do a great job have lots to offer and recognise it’s not all about the elite.

    my opoinion

    toepoke on November 20th, 2008 9:32 am

Toepoke, thanks for the advice, but no-ones trying to run futsal in NZ round here. We’re just a little organisation who’s trying to organise a few competitions and learn more about a game we discovered a few years ago - a game we love.

I cottoned on a long time ago that futsal is a game in its own right, and a lot of my energy is going in to us becoming as pure a futsal organisation as we can be, and not, as you say, be just some kind of training game for football. We want to play better, coach better and communicate better.

I’ve met the Vikings and was lucky enough to attend a great tournament they had in QLD at Easter last year. I’ve met some of the others (in NZ) too and they all seem to be ‘futsal people’ at heart. So really, i’m happy to work with anyone…

    Paul on November 20th, 2008 10:43 am

hey toepoke, do you want to name these dastardly plotters? Are they still in power now?

    Simon on November 20th, 2008 5:06 pm

Toepoke may even beat me Simon, I’m still getting all the players registration numbers and phone numbers and addresses and email addresses for those going to the Vikings nationals in Sydney..its taking longer than I thought going to visit each one personally ! ……that was what you asked for wasnt it ?

    F.SALA on November 20th, 2008 6:00 pm

I’m looking to come over to Australia in Jan. I was planning on watching the last couple of days of the nationals in Canberra. Sounds like the Vikings comp in Sydney going to be worth hanging round for too - its going to be interesting for an outsider like me to make the comparison between the two…I bet they’re both going to be pretty good, surely?

    Paul on November 20th, 2008 6:52 pm

F.SALA your wit only exceeds your beauty.

    Simon on November 20th, 2008 7:13 pm

So true my friend, so true !

    F.SALA on November 20th, 2008 7:15 pm

Enjoy your trip Paul but dont be fooled into thinking the nationals are the be all and end all of futsal. Both will be worth watching .There is a lot of lip service given to “grass roots” futsal but little action to follow it up.
Yes nationals and elite comps are fine but we have to look at our youngsters and their development, we have problems in Australia with junior development, girls / women and of course country and remote areas. there are mixed views on how we should do it and who should do it……..sound familiar?

    F.SALA on November 20th, 2008 7:41 pm

It does sound familiar. I’m kind of curious about the percentage of futsal playing kids in Aussie who also play football and how their time spent doing that in winter impacts on their ability to develop as futsal players. Would you say lots of the kids who go to these elite futsal tournaments are footballers as well? Do you have many specialists at the 8-15yrs age?

I remember watching a Vikings tournament a couple of Easters ago and being very impressed with the 8-10 year olds in particular - SW QLD, Sunshine Coast and West Moreton all spring to mind. I remember going away wondering where those kids hearts were, in futsal or football. Maybe it was both, but I was hoping it was the former!

    Paul on November 20th, 2008 9:21 pm

I dont know of any futsal coaches who tell their players NOT to play football. But there are still lots of outdoor coaches (incl your so called “rep” coaches) who tell footballers NOT to play futsal ! (Admittedly lots of these are elderly, ignorant, and unaccredited !!!)
You can of course play both as many do in places like Sydney but its a battle as “football” sees futsal as ‘taking their players and much needed revenue ‘ ! That is why we question the FFA being in charge of futsal….case of conflict of interests ?

The percentage is very high of course, but that should and will change as futsal becomes a sport in its own right. More and more children are telling me they prefer futsal to football, now that has to be a concern for football clubs ?
