AFC develops Futsal thru Club Championship
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has invited 10 Member Associations to take part in the inaugural AFC Futsal Club Championship 2009.
One Futsal Club side each from Australia, China, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Qatar, Thailand and Uzbekistan will take part in the July 4-12 tournament at a venue yet to be announced.
For the inaugural edition, the AFC Futsal Club Committee decided to make it an invitation event and each Member Association has been asked to nominate their Futsal national league champions for the tournament.
The 10 clubs will be divided into two groups of five. After a single round-robin, the top two teams advance to the semi-finals. The draw for the tournament will be held on April 30.
In order to strengthen future editions of this tournament, AFC is encouraging Associations to plough more resources into lifting the standard of Futsal in Asia.

The winner of the Men’s competition at our Nationals in Canberra will represent Australia at this event.
Anything for the Women Frank?
Isn’t it supposed to be a club side?Shouldn’t it be the winner of the premier league vs the best club teams in the other states to decide who goes? I understand the need for our state teams to have competition & that the cost might be prohibitive to clubs but the heading for this article is ‘AFC develops Futsal thru Club Championship’. This would also give opportunities to players who don’t make the state teams but play great futsal in a good, solid team, week in week out. And we all know that every premier league team has at least one player that should have made the state team & didn’t.
and will be flogged……..
Shaz, I understand your view but when you look at the other countries they will be sending teams from their national league. We don’t have a national league so the national championships is the next best level.
this looks great…. but I think the key phrase here is “AFC is encouraging Associations to plough more resources into lifting the standard of Futsal in Asia”…. can’t imagine FFA ploughing more resources into Futsal……. shame……
Simon…………not that I’m aware of.
FFA are spending money into an independant review of how to best invest in Futsal on a national basis. This review is due at the end of January.
Just a pity they didn’t canvass more FUTSAL people and not so much emphasis on how FOOTBALL would like to see FUTSAL run………seems to me the outcome was already decided in the terms of reference of the review anyway
I hear that the Championships will be held in Iran.
Frank we all know that the review is nothing more than a warm fuzzy. The timing of the review is shocking (over the Futsal season) they met with Football officials who see Futsal as a training game.
Lets hope the review indicates the sport should be run by Futsal minded people.
I’ve heard a rumour that OFC have told Football NZ to have nothing to do with Futsal…. mind you can’t imagine OFC doing much either but word has it Scott is moving to NZ
FFA Futsal will never be run by Futsal People with out FFA Football pupeteers pulling the strings…sad but true…training game revenue raising in off season …now that the game is going thru the roof in Aust why else would they “suddenly be calling a review”………… to find out how to get their hands on income from futsal
Hi Toepoke – those are two pretty interesting rumours about NZ – care to elaborate?
Is nothing more than a rumour Defender and we all know how dangerous they can be.
There was some talk on here back a month or 2 involving Scott Gilligan and some from NZ about him taking on a role for OFC for Futsal…. maybe Scott can elaborate a little more… also I think his interview had some talk on it
A mate who plays in Auckland told me that FNZ has been told not to worry about Futsal…… but like I said nothing more than a rumour
Until the futsal community stop bitching and unite, futsal will not develop nationally. No sponsor or media organisation in their right mind will put money into a sport where the interested parties would rather slag off against each other than develop a unified sport. This is reminisent of the old National Soccer League with all it’s disparate parties until FFA reformed football in Australia.
Yep and as soon as Football people stop thinking they know whats best for Futsal nothing will change….. Sport needs to be run by purists
Why wouldnt the FFA Australian Futsal Club Championship 08 or 09 Winners be selected for this event? I’m assuming it qualifies as our national tournament for CLUBS.???
Referring to this http://www.actfutsal.asn.au/documents/AFCC08INFORMATION.pdf
would be good if the club championship went ahead buddy ;)
I heard there is going to be a re trial if nsw wins?
oops
