Four Four Two Blog: To Osaka And Back
For the past seven days, I had the pleasure of visiting Osaka in Japan to celebrate the conclusion of my first year of university studies.
Although the trip was primarily for holiday purposes, I was naturally drawn to the football culture in Osaka, and can only hope that one day Australian cities will be able to replicate the on-field and off-field success of Japanese football in general.
Although it’s been said before by various football journalists, I was able to confirm with my own eyes that the J-League is definitely the benchmark for leagues in Asia to follow. The commercial side of the game in Japan is amazing, and it comes as no surprise that football is now considered the number one sport in Japan.
Upon my arrival in the main city centre, I was amazed at to see a seven-storied football shop plastered with a huge image of Gamba Osaka’s mercurial midfielder, Yasuhito Endo – as well as a large amount of people sporting the blue and black jersey of Gamba.
Attending a J-League game was another whole new experience for me as a football fan and I was amazed at the atmosphere within the stadium at a Gamba Osaka match. While the Japanese are usually stereotyped as career-centred, quiet individuals, it was a great surprise to witness the Gamba fans beat their drums and singing at the top of their voices for the whole duration of the match – which was in fact a mid-week cup tie.
With the FFA playing with the idea of mid-week fixtures, would fans turn out in notable force to support their teams?
A further point of interest is the existence of a second team in Osaka – Cerezo Osaka, which plays in the J-League second division. I attended a Cerezo game against Shonan Bellmare, expecting to see a quiet affair with some semi-decent football.
Again, I was surprised. The level of diehard support for this second tier team was probably equivalent to what is seen in Australia for its top tier clubs, with the fans again making considerable noise for the whole game.
With AFC president Bin Hammam stating that most Asian countries would be expected to have a promotion/relegation system in place in the future, hopefully Australia will be able to have this level for support for second tier teams. At present, this would seem to be out reach for the A-League, as it would be hard to imagine fans turning out at say, QSAC or Perry Park, to support a second Brisbane-based outfit with genuine passion.
Another factor which shows the amazing growth in football popularity in Japan is the existence of the F-League – Japan’s very own professional futsal league. Nearly every sports store in Osaka was decked with Shriker Osaka (the local futsal club) merchandise.
Most worrying from an Australian perspective was that the level of football technicality on display in Japan was of a level not seen in Australia in regularly capacity. The majority of the Cerezo Osaka players were two-footed and quick on and off the ball, producing a very entertaining, fast display of football.
This could be attributed to Phillippe Troussier’s time as Japan national team coach, where not only did he focus on the first team’s development, but implemented grassroots initiatives to ensure that young players coming through the ranks would possess a higher level of technical capability.
With Troussier ultimately ousted by Verbeek in the race for the Socceroos coaching role, it may perhaps have been a wise decision to have brought in the Frenchman due to his stated desire to implement a similar football development structure in Australia to what he had done in Japan.
While Verbeek has done a great job as national team coach, he has yet to really work collaboratively with the technical director and/or age group coaches to ensure that the standard of football is indeed growing at all levels.
Having said all this, it’s obvious that Australia is still really finding its feet as a football nation, having only implemented the fully professional A-League a few years ago.
However, if Australia hopes to develop the quality of its footballers and the A-League, it should look no further than Japan and the growth that the J-League has enjoyed in recent years.

Queensland Viking takes on a Great Wall
Yamanto based Scott Fenn, has continued the international rise of Vikings Futsal with an offer from a Chinese University, to take part in the Chinese Division One Futsal League.
Fenn will be competing in an 8 team League that commences this month and runs through until April 2009. In addition to this Scott will be eligible to contest in the Chinese FA Cup, bringing his total contribution to approximately 60 games for the season.
Chinese Futsal Association spokesman Li Jing, is adamant that Scott’s success is a direct result of Vikings on going efforts in China.
Scott’s university, The University of Electronic Science and Technology, (UESTC) is also working on registering him for the Chinese National University League which will be held from May to July next year. UESTC have offered Scott a nice salary for his stay in addition to arranging his accommodation.
UESTC is situated in the Region of Chengdu, which was at the forefront of world focus in May of this year when it was hit by China’s largest earthquake since 1976. The area has devastated with 1000’s killed and left homeless.
The pathway to China for Scott received a boost earlier in the year with selection in the Queensland Men’s team to play in the 2009 Vikings National Titles. This came on the back of training stints in Brazil with elite coaches & players.
Whilst at UESTC, Scott, a former Ipswich Grammar student, hopes to continue studying in Civil Engineering.
