Tasmania at the 2009 Vikings Nationals
January 12th-19th Tasmania sent eight teams to the 2009 National Club Championships held in Sydney.
Mens Open
The Tasmanian mens team competed in their first ever National Club Championships and with all the players coaching junior teams through the day and backing up for two games a night they did extremely well in sweltering conditions.
The team which included Jon Foley-Donaghue, Huw Jarvis, Corey Smith, Igor Sao Jose, Michael McKenna and Trent Pearce alongside imports Guillermo Jorge and Gilberto Costa from Brazil finished in 5th place after looking like being tournament darkhorses early.
The side started with wins over defending Pacific League Champion Victoria 6-3 which included Australia’s best Futsal player in Fernando De Moraes and Northern NSW 10-0. The second night saw them beat the New Zealand Vikings National Side 6-3 in what was a one sided affair before playing tournament favourites Queensland which had 4 Futsalroos on display. The game against Queensland was called off just before half time due to a series head injury to Guillermo and Queensland was rewarded the result 2-1 as is stood.
The last night saw the team go down 8-2 to NSW and then draw 4-4 with NSW City in what were very taxing games with injuries and illness causing the starting side to suffer severely.
The final game saw the side miss the semi finals narrowly by going down to eventual finalist Western n Australia 4-2 with the bare 5 starting players. All in all it was a successful tournament and we hope to see our 2010 squad much stronger and in with a real shot.
The side was well served through out the tournament by Captain Jon Foley-Donaghue while the standout player was Michael McKenna who celebrated his performances with selection into the All-Star starting 5 for the tournament and the Australian Squad which heads to Russia later in the year, there were also some outstanding individual games played by Igor Sao Jose, Corey Smith and the two imports Guillermo and Gilberto throughout.
With selections for the Australian side announced within the next two weeks we are hoping to have more Tasmanian representation alongside Michael.
Congratulations to Michael on being the first Tasmanian ever to be picked in an Australian Mens Futsal Squad.
Junior Nationals
The first ever National Club Championships for Tasmania was very successful with the junior sides finishing with their heads held very high after giving the other states an amazing battle.
In the National Championships Tasmania had three sides which made finals only to go down in the most painful and narrow defeats. The 15 Girls side based in the North of Tasmania unluckily went down in the final in a penalty shoot out which was the girls only loss of the tournament and was absolutely heartbreaking while the 12 Boys Islanders Academy squad backed up their 2008 National Schools Championships victory by making their way to the final of the 12 boys division with 6 wins out of 7. In the final they met Qld City who had been together for 4 yrs and were reigning Australian Regional Champions. The final was end to end all game and was dominated by possession in what was a very tactical chess style final ending with Qld scoring in the last minute to win the game 3-2 and send our boys home with the runners up trophy. The 12 Girls Eastern region squad also made the final in their age group which saw 12 Girls and 13 Girls groups together in the round robin stage due to numbers. The girls made the 12 Girls final only to go down very narrowly in a game that could have gone either way. These sides were very unlucky in the end but these results along with the 11 Boys, 12 Boys, 13 Boys and 12 Girls reaching the semi finals stage of their first Nationals it shows the power that Tasmania has going forward.
Squad selections and trials will be held at the end of the 2009 Summer Season for 2010 National Championships. We are hoping this will give Tasmania the best possible chance of reaching the best results.
Tasmanian Players who were selected in National All Star teams for their age groups were -
11 Boys- Dean Watkins (Tasmanian Islanders)
12 Boys- Angus Souter (Tasmanian Islanders)
13 Boys- Justin Noonan (Tasmania North)
12 Girls- Athina Tsakiris (Tasmania South East)
15 Girls- Catherine Gaggin (Tasmania North)
15 Girls- Kiara Walsh (Tasmania North)
Open Men- Michael McKenna (Tasmanian Islanders)
Other Standout performers were -
11 Boys- Sam Adkins (Tasmanian Islanders)
11 Boys- Lucas Targett (Tasmanian Islanders)
12 Boys- Cameron Rogers (Tasmanian Islanders)
13 Boys- Alexander Gaggin (Tasmania North)
13 Boys- Adam Gorrie (Tasmania North)
12 Girls- Bronte Davison (Tasmania South East)
15 Girls- Louise McMullen (Tasmania North)
Junior Club Series
All Tasmanian sides stayed on after the Nationals to compete in the the National Club series which sees club teams compete to become National Champions. After a week of 35+ degrees in the National Championships most sides saw this as a chance to rotate players and give everyone a go. It was very hard for the children to back up after such a long week but it was a credit to them that they did as well as they did. With all sides doing very well the stand outs were the 11 Boys Islanders Academy who won 8 out of 9 games with the only loss coming in the final and the 13 Boys Northern Fusion Team who competed in the 12 boys division due to numbers and got over the line to win the final against 12 Boys team The Zoo in the final in golden goal.

A couple of new features on Futsal4all
In the last couple of days we’ve added two new features to Futsal4all.
You may notice at the end of each post a list of any related posts. This will allow you to quickly skip to previous posts on the same topic. The list itself is automatically determined based on the contents of the post you are viewing. Hopefully it gets it right most of the time instead of wrong :)
The second new feature is the ‘Email this Post/Page’ option at the bottom of each post. If you find the particular article interesting and want to share it with others, simply click on the link and it will send it to your desired destination.
There are a few other things we are gradually working on as time permits (including speeding everything up), but if you have any suggestions on features you would like to see, or features that annoy you that you would like removed, please let us know in the comments below.
Cheers,
Futsal4all Admin

Sydney Benfica FC 2008/09 FNSW Futsal Super League Club Champions
On Saturday the 24th January 2009, Sydney Benfica FC in conjunction with 5 Star Futsal, secured their inaugural FNSW Club Championship.
Not long ago, in the 2005/06 season, the club debut as Red Eagles in the Futsal Premier League and finished last as a club, with their 14 Boys scoring more than half the clubs points. That year the boys went down in the preliminary final 3-1, to Sydney City Eagles.
This team acted as the foundations of the club, as they began to rebuild for the next season, where they took part in a two-tiered competition, finishing third in the club championship. All their men’s teams contested the finals series with three grand finalist and their youth men’s crowned as Champions.
In 2007/08 the club finished 4th. At the State Titles, the club won several championships and were strongly represented by their men’s teams.
Once the 2008/09 seasons was upon us, the club had been busy putting together a plan. Their men’s were already strong. It was merely a matter of tweaking them a little. Their focus was on their women’s teams. If they wanted to win the Club Championship, it was going to be done through their women.
After 13 grueling rounds, and with the Dural Warriors and the other competing clubs pushing all the way, Sydney Benfica FC climbed to the top of the summit with all their men’s teams and 16 Girls qualifying for the final series. Their Youth Mens team were crowned Minor Premiers.
Special mention goes to our 13 Girls and Women’s, who missed out on the final series by 1 point. Without your efforts Club Championship, would not have been possible.
To our major sponsors Wideform, Radio Rentals and Marrickville Tennis Club and our other remaining sponsors, your assistance is greatly appreciated.
To our web designer, Seeclear Systems and web host Seccom Networks, thankyou for the smashing website.
To the parents, officials, coaches and the Benfica supporters, you were simply sublime.
Last but not least, to all the players that represented the club, you did so with honour and distinction. You mixed the skill of futsal, with heart and determination.
This “Club Championship” is truly yours.
Lorenzo D’Addona

Vikings Futsal Acknowledge Their Shining Lights
The cream of Vikings’ National Titles where announced throughout the concluding stages of the 4 day event.
One player in each position in all age groups where selected as a 2009 Vikings All Star. The selections where made by opposition coaches whom gave their opinion at the end of each individual game.
Although not set in concrete, the prestigious honour of an All Star selection puts a player well and truly up in the eyes of the selection panel for when they sit to pick the Vikings overseas tours later in the year.
A vast spread of competing States where represented and despite the award placing accolades on the individual, more often then not they where reflective of the dominant team in each category.
Pictures of the award winners can be found on the Vikings home page in the Photo Gallery (direct link to the Allstars slideshow on the Vikings photo gallery here)

Preview Sutherland vs Maccabi Futsal Super League (NSW)
Saturday 24th January 2009 will see the final round of the 08 – 09 Football NSW Futsal Super League season with the games being played at Menai Indoor Sports Centre.
With Sutherland under 12s boys in 9th and Maccabi in 14th this game will be played with high intensity and passion as both teams use this game as an opportunity to gain more experience in Futsal.
The under 14s boys from Sutherland can think of themselves a bit unlucky in a couple of matches this season and therefore hold 8th spot as they look forward to playing Maccabi in 11th. Good luck guys.
Our under 13s girls team are the stand outs of the season lead by Peter Ellis for Sutherland as with a win against Dural last week it sealed their 4th spot. Playing Maccabi will allow them more room to move the 5 Star Futsal ball around in preparation for the semis and finals series. We look forward to seeing the girls in the Grand Final late Feb 09.
The under 16s Sutherland boys currently hold 5th spot against Maccabi who hold the wooden spoon. This game will allow our boys to be ready for the semis and finals series. Guys be sure to listen to your coach as I have the confidence that you will go all the way.
Our Sutherland under 16s girls will be looking for their first win of the season playing Maccabi in 14th spot. Its goal difference that has Sutherland higher on the ladder in 13th. Good luck girls, your efforts and that of your coaches efforts have improved you all over the past few weeks. Your team is inline for an award being that of the most improved of the season.
Maccabi hold 4th spot and thier Youth Men’s will progress into the semis and finals series, so therefore our Sutherland Youth Mens team will play for pride and try to improve on last weeks results.
Our Sutherland open women’s team hold a higher goal difference than Maccabi and therefore the match will be played for the prize of a wooden spoon. Ladies lets make sure we get to the venue on time and with enough preparation, a win will be in the bag. However its expected to be close so watch out.
The open mens match up will be a tough encounter, our Sutherland guys will play for keeps to ensure they finish on a high note, we look forward to an entertaining game of Futsal.
We hope to see you all at Menai Indoor Sports Centre with kick off times as usual, starting 2pm and concluding 8.30pm.
