Coast kids take national title

Logo - Sunshine DailyThe Sunshine Coast connection has proved a golden one for the Queensland 13-years futsal side, which has taken out the national championship in Canberra.

All players in the 10-man squad hail from the Sunshine Coast.

The boys pulled off a nail-biting win in the final of the 2009 Football Federation Australia National Futsal Championship, beating Victoria 5-4.

The result was a stunning 12-point turnaround, with the Queensland team having been beaten by the same side 14-3 in the preliminary rounds.

Coach Trevor Edwards said he was proud as punch of the boys after they were able to perfectly execute his game plan and stifle the Victorian attack.

“The key thing was I knew what the boys had to do to turn it around,”.

On a futsal court there a number of things you can start to do to close down what teams do.

“In that first game, because it was a pool game we knew where our position on the ladder was going to be, we let that game go, particularly in the second half to rest players for the semi-final and final.

“The stronger players I rested for that semi-final and final.

“The thing that I changed for the final, (in the preliminary game) where their boys were shooting from was in fairly close – they were getting lots of goals in at the far post, where they were taking shots. Our goalkeeper didn’t have much chance.

“Our boys in the final pushed them out forward, so they were beginning to take shots from further out.

“And our goalkeeper was able to save some of those shots from further out.”

The side consisted of Keegan Becker, Sam Curley, Julian Edwards, Billy Knepscheld, Jayden Liddicoat, Jed Malin, Kayden Oakes, Nathan Pike, Alec Powell and James Tait.

All of them were accustomed to playing against or with each other either through local futsal or soccer competitions.

Edwards said the combinations formed by the boys during that time was a deciding factor in their win.

“A lot of them play outdoor football as well,” he said.

“Some of them have been playing with each other or known each other for the last three, four or five years.”

Edwards highlighted goalkeeper Curley as one of the standout players for the side.

We are the champions (NSW)

logo_nswThe Wauchope Warriors Futsal team is a “bunch of guys from the bush who play together”.And now they are a champion bunch.

The Warriors recently took out the Super Nova Northern NSW Premier League after a tense grand final victory against Lismore.

Goal keeper Stephen Fisher said the team was lucky to escape with the 2-1 win.

“We went a goal down early in the second half,” he said.

And the boys from the bush left their run late, but it was effective.

“We just wore them down and in the last minute scored two goals through Matt Taylor and Sam Cass,” the 19-year-old said.

“It was a really tight game but I think we were just able to wear them down and in the end we got the win.”

The team is made up of three lads from Comboyne, two from Urunga and one from each of Beechwood, Ellenborough and Yarrowitch.

The team had been playing together for a few years but is still incredibly young.

The oldest in the team is 19-year-old. And there is metropolitan glory now in the sights of the team from Northern NSW.

A decision will be made soon if the team travels to Sydney later this month for the National Club Championships.

“We haven’t decided yet but it would be great to go,” the 19-year-old said.

Futsal continues to be a strong sport in the Wauchope and hinterland area.

Nationals Offer Mckeena Many Options (Vikings)

Logo - Vikings TasmaniaAn Australian tour to Russia at the end of the year, that’s what Michael McKenna hopes to obtain at the end of this weeks Vikings National Titles.

But McKenna 25, a former Junior Australian representation, rates his personal ambitions, on an even keel with coaching the Tasmanian under 12’s Girls touring squad.

“I’m not sure what the bigger challenge is…” laughs Mike. “12 year olds are a real handful”.

But Michael’s main aim, is for the girls is to enjoy the experience. “It’s all about learning the game & making new friends. The girls have the opportunity to mingle, meet new people and run a muck (with in reason), with other kids from all over the country. So far I am very happy with how they are going both on and off the court.”

Tassie have 6 teams in the inaugural Vikings competition, and Mckenna is at the forefront of their 2009 charge. Mike is goal keeper for the senior Men’s team whom opened their account with a gutsy 6-3 win over rivals Victoria. That was followed up by a resounding 10-0 triumph over Northern NSW.

Word on the street is that the former Sydney Premier League rep, has put his name well a truly up in front of the selectors with some solid early performances.

Mike puts the success of both himself & his side down to being good mates. “The boys we have at these Titles are a real close knit unit. Logistically we have been up against it. Our bus even arrived 30 minutes late for our first game, but it has really pulled us together.”

The Vikings Futsal Tournament has given Mike an unbelievable opportunity. One that by his own admition, he would never get playing the extended, outdoor version of the game.

“With this set up I can coach the girls, witch is something that I love & represent my state at the highest level. I feel like I can really give something back to the sport.”

Mckenna, who had a lay off from the sport for 2 years, has never been far away, with helping establish different organisational aspects of the Vikings charge in Tasmania.

4 venues across Sydney’s western suburbs are hosting the Vikings Nationals, which conclude on Friday. After which the Vikings National Club’s Tournament will be staged across the weekend.

NSW Thunder and Lighting Run Riot at Futsal National Championships

2009 FFA Nationals : Men's Thunder Man of the Match Adrian Vizzari (front)

2009 FFA Nationals : Men's Thunder Man of the Match Adrian Vizzari (front)

Football NSW sent 33 teams down to Canberra to represent NSW in the 30th National Futsal Championships. NSW as defending champions were looking to continue its dominance of recent years.

NSW continued its winning ways with 14 sides winning a National Title out of a possible 16 Finals contested. NSW did the double in 5 age groups with NSW Thunder playing NSW Lightning in the final.

Women’s Thunder won its fifth consecutive National Title with solid week of Futsal that led to NSW Thunder beating NSW Lighting in the Final thanks to a Natalie Spirovski first half goal.

The Highlight of finals day was the Men’s Final with NSW Thunder narrowly losing last year’s final to ACT Cobras, and with the chance to represent Australia in first ever AFC Futsal Club Championship to be held in Iran later in the year it was all on the line. NSW took an early lead against the ACT Cobras in the Final care of a Lachlan Wright effort that left the home side stunned. The Cobras came back into the game with mixed up in the NSW defence leading to the Cobras scoring into an empty net. The game was then turned on it head with NSW Thunder receiving two red cards to experienced Futsalroos Lachlan Wright and Simon Keith. After the send off the young NSW side were lead by the experience of Adrian Vizzari the side dug deep and forced the game into extra time. With the scores locked at 1-1 at the end of the first period of extra time and both sides sitting on 5 fouls it was always going to be an action packed ending. With 30seconds remaining NSW Thunder man of the mach Adrian Vizzari was fouled in a breakaway, Vizzari stepped up the 10 meter spot and sealed victory with a venomous drive to the keeper’s right giving him no chance. NSW were worthy winners and now have the bonus of representing Australia at the AFC Futsal Club Championship.

A Special mention to the Solomon Islands boys who played in the game of the tournament verse NSW Thunder in the semi final of the under 14 Boys competition. Thunder took the game 5-4 but Futsal was the winner for all who were there to witness this great game of Futsal.
