Victoria Nationals Roundup
The Under 11 Girls team made its debut at the National Futsal Championships this year and performed admirably going down 3-1 to ACT Cobras in the Semi Final. Coached by John Perich and Team Manager Sam Mlynarz, the Girls finished third, though equal on 9 points with first and second spot to NSW Thunder and ACT Cobras.
The Under 12 Boys, Coached by Jack Dugonjic and Team Manager Dietmar Schaffner went all the way to the Grand Final only to come off second best to NSW in a nail biting Penalty Shootout loss against NSW Thunder. The match was tied at 3 – 3 at the end of extra time. This talented Victoria side finished top of Pool B with 4 wins from as many matches.
The Under 13 Boys, Coached by Spiro Kargas and Team Manager John Dougall inflicted similar damage to their opponents by finishing top of the group stage with a maximum total of 18 points, 6 wins from 6 matches. With the amount of talent in the team and the amount of experience in the Coaching staff, it was no surprise that the boys would make the Grand Final. The end result however did not go their way narrowly missing out on silverware against a competitive Queensland outfit with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss. John Buceto picked up the gong for ‘Player of the Final.
‘The Under 13 Girls, Coached by Mary Iskander and Team Manager Liza Stevens, finished third in the group stage and went on to play ACT Cobras in the second Semi Final. Though suffering a 3-1 defeat, the girls performed admirably throughout the tournament with wins over NSW Lightning and ACT Colts.
The Under 14 Boys, Coached by Pat Barerra and Team Manager Manuel Munoz, finished second in the group stage ensuring a Grand Final spot against a first place NSW Thunder after a narrow 3-2 win in the Semi Final against NSW Lightning. It was NSW Thunder however who came away with the title after a 3-1 against the boys.
The Under 15 Boys, Coached by Wael Gharzeddine and Team Manager Nicholas Deluca, also finished second in the group stage and earned themselves a place in the Grand Final against a very experienced NSW Thunder side. The Final result of 9-2 meant that the boys would finish up with a Runners Up medal.
The Under 15 Girls, Coached by Edgard Vatcky and Team Manager Deidre Burggraaf, finished third in the group stage and secured a Semi Final match up against NSW Thunder. Though the girls came off second best with a 5-2 loss, they performed very well in the tournament with wins against ACT Cobras, Southern NSW Flame and a 1-1 with NSW Lightning.
The Youth Men, Coached by Greg Kassidas and Team Manager Elyce Carlyle, went down to 3-2 to Southern NSW in the qualifying final after a tremendous performance of finishing second in a very competitive group stage with 3 wins from 4 matches.
An inaugural Youth Women side, Coached by Mark Torcaso and Team Manager Ben Shelton, were not able to gain a finals entry into this year’s tournament. It was the first time Victoria had fielded a side in the competitive Youth Women age category at the Championships.
A revamped Open Men side, Coached by Paul Vidic and Team Manager Ari Simos were also unable to make it out of the group stage but finished with wins against Queensland 7-1 and 4-3 against FC Errand (New Caledonia). The team will continue to stay together after the Championships in order to put into effect a Men’s development programme which will ensure that the team are yet again properly prepared for their quest to take out the National Titles and achieve a possible inclusion into the 2010 Asian Football Confederation Futsal Club Championships.
The Open Women side, Coached by Kat Smith and Team Manager Anastasia Damante, finished fourth in the group stage and secured a Semi Final playoff against NSW Thunder. The girls unfortunately went down 2-0 to the experienced NSW outfit however gained a considerable amount of respect for their gallantry and display shown during the Championships. Player Coach Kat Smith took out the ‘Most Valuable Player’ Award of the tournament.
