Unity Cup 2009 Futsal Tournament (NSW)

** 19/2/2009 : Reminder that the Unity Cup takes place this weekend **

The 7th One Day Futsal Tournament will be held held on 22 February 2009 in Hills Sports Stadium, Castle Hill.

The Unity Cup is a one day futsal tournament which generally takes place in February of each year. This event is organized by two individuals and sponsored by the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Baulkham Hills.

How it got started:

It all started in 2003 … a member of the Baulkham Hills Bahá’í community (a very eager football fan), Ozzie A Ansari, initiated a tournament called “One Day Bahá’í Indoor Soccer”. He was later joined by Soheil Adabjou (another eager football fan), and after a some name changes they decided that the most suitable name for the tournament is “Unity Cup”.

The aims of the tournament:

  • Promote unity and fellowship amongst the members of the Bahá’í community.
  • Provide a fun way to interact with the wider community.
  • Offer a safe and well organised environment for Bahá’ís as well as the wider community to enjoy a fun sporting activity.

The 2009 tournament will be our seventh consecutive one and it promises to be the best one yet.

Limited spots are available.

For referees appointed to the competition decider, it is an honour, as well as a reward for their efforts and performance throughout the season. As expected, the appointments panel had a difficult task to decide on those who were given each job, however it is pleasing to have a quality pool of match officials to choose from.

FIFA Futsal World Cup Referee Scott Kidson will be partnered with 2008 State League Referee of the Year Andrew Best as Sydney Magic attempt to defend their Premier Futsal League Men’s title against the 2007 Champion Campbelltown City Quake side. The Women’s finale sees two previous winners of the Mario Mazzeo Award, Sam McIntosh and Peter Wilson-Mosey, set to oversee. The Youth Grand Final pairs Gavin Lee with Darius Turner, both of whom have walked onto the pitch for the FFA Nationals Men’s’ final in previous years.

Select Group referee Owen Ferguson will be joined by State Titles Men’s Final Referee Wayne Ranson to take charge of the Men’s Super Futsal League Grand Final between Dural Warriors and Sydney Benfica. Alessandra Moussa and Khaled Aly team up for the Women’s grade decider between Breakers FC and Dural. The Benfica and Dural clubs meet again in the Youth Grand Final where Paul Respicio and Nick Backo will position themselves on opposite touch lines.

For all appointed referees this is the culmination of a season’s worth of hard work and training. The Technical Sub Committee would also like to take this opportunity to again thank all referees involved in making this another successful State League Season.

Melbourne Futsal League Update

Logo - Melbourne RedsThe U11 component of the inaugural “Melbourne Futsal League” was completed last Sunday at the Veneto Club Stadium.

It was a close finish with the top 3 teams separated by only 4 points. Congratulations to Australian Futsal Group for taking out the honors with 26 points from 12 matches.

Melbourne Reds finished on equal points with Cobras Futsal Club (22 points), however the Cobras clinched 2nd spot on the ladder with a favorable goal difference. Although the Victory Fives finished last with no points, it was great to see the boys play with enthusiasm and passion every week. The Victory Fives improved as the season went on and we look forward to seeing them back in action later in the year.

Melbourne Reds U11 Coach David Kung was happy with the performance of his U11 squad.

“We have achieved what we set out to do with these boys at this stage of their development. Half of the team are playing above their age and they have learnt so much from playing against older and more experienced players. Given that the final results came down to the last round, it shows you how competitive our young Victorian players are and how much potential there is for the sport to grow”.

Melbourne Reds would like to congratulate all of the participating clubs for their involvement and also the FFV for their support and help. We would also like to thank the Referee’s and support staff who were very professional and explained decisions to the players.

The final round of the U13 competition takes place this Sunday at the Veneto Club at Bulleen.

Jordan Wright, of Burnie, has been selected for the Australian under 19 futsal squad which will visit Hong Kong next week. Picture: Grant Wells.

It will be a culture shock to travel to a place where the population is 14 times that of Tasmania.

Young Burnie futsal player Jordan Wright is prepared for any shocks as a member of the under 19 Australian futsal team that will travel to Hong Kong.

“It’s going to be an awesome trip, a little scary and busy,” Wright said.

The Somerset Striker has found his niche in the smaller version of the world game.

All through high school, Wright was at the top of his age group when it came to soccer, and he is a valued member of the Somerset Soccer Club.

The 19-year-old possesses all the skills that are needed to become a successful futsal player – agility, speed and quick reaction time.

So when he tried out for futsal, he was a natural.

His trip will start today when the team of ten teenagers from all round Australia flies to Brisbane to play in the regional titles.

The team consists of three Tasmanians: Wright, Trent Pearce and William Ashwood, who are both from Hobart.

The team will then fly out of Brisbane tomorrow night to arrive in Hong Kong Monday morning.

During their stay in Hong Kong, the group will receive expert coaching from Guangzhou National League captain Mr Lieu.

Wright will play in two tournaments, the Guangzhou Cup and the Foshan Cup. After the trip concludes, Wright will keep travelling and hopes to extend his soccer experience over in Europe.

Campbelltown Quake 3 Inner West Allstars 2

Simon Keith lashed home two goals to help the Quake win a thrilling contest of classic Futsal against the Allstars in a game which both sides gave everything and neither side deserved to lose.

Both sides had plenty of chances early in the first half Tuan Cao went close a couple of times for the Quake and Joseph Foti and Adrian Vizzari both went close for the Allstars.

The Quake opened the scoring midway through the half when a rebound from a freekick fell to Tim Simpson who stabbed the ball through a crowded defence and past the keeper.

The Allstars levelled the game soon after when Adrian Vizzari’s shot was smartly turned in by Shervin Adeli to make it 1-1.

Both teams were having chances but Quake keeper Gavin O’Brien was the busier of the two. The teams went to the break locked at 1-1.

The fast pace of the game continued unabated in the second half with Lachlan Wright going close, Joseph Foti forcing a save from an acute angle and Quakes Symington and Downie going close.

The Quake hit the front when they were awarded a disputed freekick in front of goal. Simon Keith stepped up and blasted a shot low through the wall and into the net to make it 2-1.

Quake nearly scored again when a pass across goal just evaded the outstretched foot of Tuan Cao at the far post.

quake_allstars_2

The Allstars were also in fine form and pushed hard for an equaliser. The goal came when Jacob Di Mento popped up on the left side to hard toe poke the ball through a crowded defence and into net to level the game at 2-2.

The game was being played at a relentless pace as the game swept from one end of the court to the other with both defences and keepers making last ditch blocks and saves to keep their side in the game.

With nothing separating the two teams it was the Quake who got the decisive break.

Simon Keith carried the ball out of defence while the Allstars defenders retracted into a defensive formation but left a little too much space for Keith who was able to run too close to goal unchallenged and he smashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net to make it 3-2.

quake_allstars_3

The Allstars were virtually shooting on sight in search of an equaliser and the Quake defence did well to stave off intense pressure from a succession of corners and a flurry of attempts on goal. But it was not to be for the Allstars who bow out but gave everything and can hold their heads high.

In the end the Quake prevailed in an equally courageous effort to take on Sydney Magic PCYC in a rematch of their previous game on February 7th to see who takes who takes home the Mens Premier League crown.

Eagles rock the Quake to earn Grand Final showdown (NSW)

Campbelltown Quake 1 Sydney City Eagles 2

A goal three minutes from time by Dimitri Petratos was enough for the Eagles to edge out the Quake in a pulsating game to earn a spot in next weeks Grand Final against the Allstars.

In the opening exchanges both sides had chances but mainly from outside the area as both teams counter attacked fast and then sharply retracted to defend the space in front of goal.

Sydney City opened the scoring when Chris Hanly seized on a loose ball turned onto his right foot and lashed a shot from an acute angle inside the left post to give the Eagles the lead.

quake_eagles_1

The Quake appeared a little destabilised after conceding the opening goal as the Eagles kept up the pressure for a second goal with committed Quake defence preventing them from going further behind.

Moments before half time the Eagles lost possession with the keeper out of goal. David Van Dinklage pounced on the loose ball and his long range shot from near his own goal line went perilously close to levelling the game.

The Quake started the second half with renewed vigour as the Eagles keeper made a fine save from Daniel Fulton.

Sydney City nearly doubled their lead as Aaron Cimitile went close when his shot crashed against the crossbar.

The Quake were desperate to level the game and applied most of the pressure with the Eagles trying to hit hard on the break.

quake_eagles_2

The Quakes pressure bore results when they levelled the game through Mark Symington. A long range shot was turned around the post by the keeper and from the corner Symington stepped up unmarked and drilled his shot home to make it 1-1.

The game swept from end to end at a frenetic pace. Both sides were very combative with especially committed defence in front of goal.

Despite both sides were attacking at will but appeared that the Eagles were getting the upper hand and their possession told when they took the lead with only 3 minutes left on the clock.

quake_eagles_3

Dimitri Petratos pounced on a sudden loose ball down the left side and belted a shot from a wide angle just inside the right post to seal a win for the Eagles.

The Quake went on outright attack but could not breach the Eagles solid defence. After finishing clear leaders at the top of the table the Quake bow out by the slimmest of margins.

But there was joy for the Eagles who just shaded the game on the balance of play and chances and will go on to challenge the Allstars in what should be a fabulous Youth grand final next saturday.

Never-say-die Warriors charge to the Grand Final (NSW)

Parramatta Blueberries 1 Dural Warriors 3

The Dural Warriors fairy tale finals series continued tonight as they shot down competition leaders the Parramatta Blueberries 3-1 at the Menai Indoor Sports centre. The Warriors snuck into the finals series in fifth spot and now face Breakers FC in next weeks grand final.

Dural were fast out of the blocks from the opening whistle with Jacquie Frier twice going close in the opening exchanges.

par_dural_1

Durals quick start had Parramatta pinned back as they struggled to get their game going and get players forward. Najla Eid eventually tested the Dural keeper out with a long range effort.

Dural nearly took the lead when Rebecca Brown combined with Jacquie Frier but Parramatta keeper Claire Cherrington came out smartly to bravely block Browns shot.

Parramatta however weathered the early onslaught and were seeing more ball possession and eventually took the lead. A long throw down court from Cherrington found Melissa Parlato in front of goal who cleverly knicked her header over the keeper to give the Blueberries a 1-0 lead.

Parramatta went on the offensive after half time with Fatma Agar going close after Ashley Hume intercepted a pass mid-court. On two separate occasions Melissah Parlato was denied by Dural keeper Rachel Hui.

par_dural_2

Dural levelled the game when Jacquie Frier stabbed a shot through a crowded defence and Sarah Codrington was on the spot to cleverly tip it into the goal.

Deadlocked at 1-1 the game swept from end to end as both sides keenly contested for the ball and went in search of a goal.

The next goal came from Dural when Caitlyn Mahony slipped her defensive markers down the right side and placed the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 2-1.

Parramatta went in search of an equaliser and mounted ever increasing pressure on the Dural defence. Durals Kristie Liddle made a great block to deny Melissiah Parlato and keeper Rachel Hui was increasingly busy in goal.

par_dural_3

Late in the game Dural sealed the win when they fast counter attacked with two players on one defender. Claire Cherrington blocked the first attempt but the loose ball fell to Sarah Codrington who slid the ball into an open net to give Dural a memorable 3-1 win.

A disappointing end for table topping Parramatta as another top side bow out of the finals but Dural are in a rich vein of form at the moment are hard to beat and deserved their victory to set up a great confrontation with Breakers FC on Saturday.
