Maccabi futsal team gets another finals chance (NSW)

Logo - AJN Australian Jewish NewsThe Maccabi-Hakoah futsal senior team was pipped 4-2 by Sydney Benfica in the NSW Super League finals series on Saturday night and will face the Botany Bay pirates in a do-or-die clash this weekend.

The first-team came into the match with an imposing record, including a 7-2 win over Benfica in November, but started nervously.

Benfica cashed in on some sloppy Maccabi passing to take an early lead, before extending the margin minutes later, rifling the ball home to set up an early advantage.

But a two-goal deficit in futsal was not enough to faze a side that amassed 74 goals at over five a game this season, and the Blues finally started to string a few passes together.

Antony Tow upped the tempo when he battled through illness to enter the fray, Gareth Nar steadied the ship, composing his side as they started to knock the ball around, while Doron Pozniak kept probing for an opening to unlock the Benfica defence.

The Blues’ opener came through target-man Jordan Mundell, who got on the end of a speculative pass and finished with precision.

At the other end, keeper John Myers kept his side in the contest with a string of one-on-one saves, pouncing quickly on anything that entered his area.

A bit of Mundell magic had the Blues all square, after he held off several Benfica defenders on a marauding charge down the left, before teeing the ball up for Sam Ozana to slot home.

The second half didn’t go to plan for Maccabi, who ran out of legs as they found themselves working overtime scrambling in defence.

As they pushed forward in numbers they were caught out badly on the counter-attack, with Benfica cashing in on their pace to nick two goals on the break.

Mundell came awfully close to grabbing a goal, but the Blues didn’t provide the striker with enough support through the match and lacked penetration.

Myers was the busier of the two keepers, and pulled off a number of top saves in the second half.

Earlier, the youth side bowed out after an 8-7 defeat to Enfield Rovers.

They ran into a skilful opposition who also burst clear with an early 2-0 lead that rattled the Maccabi youngsters.

Ironically, stand-in goalkeeper Ozana scored a brace of fiercely driven free kicks that relaxed the youngsters and brought the contest alight.

It laid the platform for a spirited comeback, with Mundell nicking the ball home for the third goal before setting up Adam Friedman to tie the ledger at 4-4 at the break.

It looked as though the pendulum had swung when Andy Kanchik opened the scoring in the second period, but Enfield made the most of the end-to-end action with a four-goal spree that should’ve put Maccabi to bed.

But the young Blues never went away, and Mundell and Friedman, the two most likely players on court, scored two late, late goals in a frenetic final passage, but Enfield had done just enough to survive.

Pirates leave it late to knockout Taipans (NSW)

Botany Bay Pirates 6 South Coast Taipans 3

Two late goals from Roderigo Teixeira sealed the win for the Pirates and dealt a knockout blow to the South Coast Taipans season in a tense and competitive elimination encounter. The Taipans had the majority of the opening exchanges with Darrell Fernandes twice going close to giving his side the lead.

The Pirates were threatening but their firepower upfront was somewhat restricted as the Taipans marked Pirates striker Roderigo Teixiera very closely.

Botany keeper Omar Aly produced a great save to keep the scores level after a nice 3 man move from the Taipans.

pirates_taipans_1

The Taipans plan was working well but Botany have so much attacking talent at their disposal it only takes one moment for the game to change and halfway through the first period Denny Dutra escaped down the left flank fired a in shot which was parried by the keeper and from an acute angle smashed the rebound into net.

As the game opened up both keepers were being regularly called upon. Omar Aly saved well from the Taipans Shane Soutter and Shane Borg saved brilliantly from Teixiera.

With the Pirates gradually taking control of play they soon extended their lead when Marko Kraljevic swooped to slam the ball home from close range to make it 2-0

Shane Borg then made two outstanding saves firstly to deny Teixiera again and then to tip a Chris Bello shot onto the crossbar.

Botany made it 3-0 when Marko Kraljevic intercepted a loose pass ran the ball out of defence rounded the last defender and slotted the ball home for a marvellous goal.

Moments later the Taipans deservedly pulled a goal back when Ben Greenwood received the ball from a swift counter attack and crashed the ball home to make it 1-3 going into the break.

pirates_taipans_2

With the Pirates holding a two goal lead the Taipans went on the offensive in the second half which eventually produced dividends. The Taipans were awarded a freekick outside the area which Darrell Fernandes curled around the wall and Russell Crighton was on the spot to tip the ball past the keeper.

Almost straight after the restart Dean Triffitt was on hand to fire the ball home to make it 3-3. South Coast had courageously fought back from 0-3 down to level the game.

With scores level the game swung from end to end. Taipans keeper Jay Digger made a great save to deny a Teixiera header, Aly Omar saved well from Taipans Gareth Gardner and the Pirates Chris Bello produced a great block to deny Gareth Gardner again and Teixeira was denied twice from giving the Pirates the lead.

pirates_taipans_3

Finally the deadlock was broken from a sublime piece of skill from Kraljevic. From a corner Kraljevic feigned to pass the ball back toward halfway, the defence moved out for a split second only for Kraljevic to then slip a ball across the goal to the unmarked Teixiera to tap home.

South Coast applied heavy pressure on the Pirates and pressed hard upcourt in search of an equaliser. Aly Omar saved well from Ben Greenwood and Darrell Fernandes.

With so many Taipans players thrown forward Denny Dutra in the dying minutes collected the ball and with skill and pace dribbled through the middle of the court slipped the ball to Teixiera who swept the ball home.

pirates_taipans_4

The same situation occurred moments later when Kraljevic ran the ball out of defence with Roderigo Teixiera again brilliantly looming in support to sweep the ball home to make it 6-3.

The final score did not do justice to South Coast who gave everything and determinedly fought back from three goals down but in the end the great attacking skills of the Pirates won the day and sees them through to next weeks second semi final.

Taipans see red as Warriors cruise to the next round (NSW)

Dural Warriors 5 South Coast Taipans 0

Dural Warriors booked their passage to the next round of the finals with a comprehensive 5-0 win over an out of sorts South Coast in a match that featured a fine hat trick from Durals Jacquie Frier.

In the opening exchanges Dural were having the better possession but the Taipans were finding space to attack on the counter and looked dangerous.

taipan_warrior_1

But it was Dural who grabbed the early breakthrough when a Taipans shot on goal was diffused by Keeper Rachel Hui who ran the ball clear out of her area slipped the ball to Kristie Liddle who set up a nicely weighted pass for Caitlyn Mahoney to run onto and score.

Dural extended their lead when the South Coast defence failed to clear a ball that awkwardly bounced around the edge of the area before falling to Jacquie Frier to open her account and give the Warriors a solid 2-0 lead.

The Taipans pressed hard to get back into the game, Joline Bohne had a shot saved by the keeper and then Caitlyn Danyl had a goal bound shot tipped over the bar by keeper Rachel Hui.

taipan_warrior_2

Things just got worse for the Taipans when a quick counter attack saw Durals Demelza Howard lay the ball on for the overlapping Jacquie Frier who slammed the ball into the far corner of the net to make it 3-0.

The Taipans kept fighting and this time Courtney Danyl was denied by keeper Hui.

With only minute left of the first half Dural nearly made it four when a pass down court was latched onto by Sarah Codrington whose acrobatic lob over the keeper crashed onto the crossbar and away to safety.

taipan_warrior_3

Dural began the second half with a prolonged spell of possession which started to frustrate the Taipans team who were desperately trying to get back into the game. Caitlyn Danyl made a superb block to stop Sam Stenner from extending Durals lead.

Dural virtually put the game out of reach when Sarah Codrington set up Jacquie Frier to slam home her hat trick of goals to make it 4-0.

Nothing much seemed to be going right for the Taipans on the day as much of their shooting was off target and all efforts on target was being saved by Rachel Hui in goal, with the keeper this time saving efforts from Joline Bohne and Camille Augustyn.

taipan_warrior_4

The Taipans frustrations started to boilover when a foul on Caitlyn Danyl was not given in their favour. This led to an increasing amount of dissent from the South Coast side which led to further indiscipline. Two players were booked and Courtney Danyl was red carded.

To rub salt into the wound keeper Rachel Hui stepped up and blasted an unstoppable freekick into the top corner to give Dural an emphatic 5-0 victory and seal the Warriors passage through to the next round.

Reds Take Maximum Points… (VIC)

Logo - Melbourne RedsThe Melbourne Futsal League (MFL) got underway again with Round 3 of the U11 Boys taking place on Sunday Feb 1st at the Bulleen Futsal Stadium.

Melbourne Reds were bolstered by the return of Stefan Cardamone and Jesse Mills – Warthold, after their succesful trip to the FFA titles in Canberra.

Game 2 was a closer affair with ‘Australian Futsal Group’ going goal for goal. However a late rally by the Reds saw them earn a well deserved 4 – 3 victory. Next week see’s Round 4 of the U13 Boys take place at the same venue. With clubs having all players back from state duty it promises to be an exciting round not to be missed.
