Futsal Pacific Titles results (NSW)

Northern NSW Futsal does well at the Titles

logo_nswFollowing last weeks local region win at the grand finals, local Byron boys Nat Caldwell and Zeb Branton and Alstoneville local Nick Steel were joined by 6 other 13 year old boys from across Northern NSW to represent the region at the Pacific Titles held over the Easter Long Weekend at the Beenleigh arena.

Joel Clare, coming from as far away as Grafton the rest of the team was made up of fellow local Toby Barton from Bangalow and Pattrick Kable, Nathan Veness, Max Harlem from the Northern NSW Region.

Competing against 13 other teams from across Australia and New Zealand the 14 teams were split into two divisions. Our boys kept their heads up after being defeated by one goal in their first game. Over the three days the team remained undeafeated to rank first in their division and qualifying for the semi finals.

In the semis the team played off against Logan City, the second top team from the other under 14’s group. After the first half the score was 4 to 1 our way. The second half saw sheer determination, fine foot skills and the hunger to get to the finals shown by both teams. Logan City started to make a come back gaining another 2 goals but our boys triumphed with the end score of 5 to 3 our way.

Exhausted after playing 14 games of 40 minutes spread over the three days our team entered the finals against South West Queensland, who had also been the leaders of their division. Not having played this team, coach Jono Harlem rallied our boys and focussed them on the basics of clean passing, tactical play and good sportsmanship. Dripping sweat the team took up their positions preparing for the unknown. At the conclusion of the first half the score was 5 to 2, their way. Boosting our team with new found assertiveness and energy Jono sent them into the second half with a team determined to turn the tables. Having socialised with a number of teams off court, many from queensland, our team were cheered not only by family who had made the trip up but also by new found friends from across Australia. Our team pulled out all stops and scored 5 goals in the second half. Goal keeper, Nat Caldwell kept South Queensland at bay only conceeding one goal. The final score 7/6 our way.

Unbeknown to the boys many of the refs and other officials had come to watch the game, selectors for National Teams were also present. Nat Caldwell was invited to be one of 5 boys to attend the 2009 Goal Keeping School of Excellence, held in Brisbane. He was also given the chance to train immediately at a three day camp with Brazilian Futsal coaches at Talebudgera in preparation for his tour as the Australian Goal Keeper to Brazil and Argentina in July.

The finals ended a long weekend of intense competition and comradery between the competing teams. Officials and reffs commented on the high level of sportsmanship, skill, gutso and professionalism shown throughout the tournament by the Northern NSW team, which is ultimatley why such a large number of the crowd were cheering for our team even if they were queenslanders. It was also a great bonus that not only did our 14’s team win their division but our 16 boys were also victorious, playing their competition without their trusty Goal Keeper Layton Barton who was injured the week before.

Gold Coast Futsal Premier League (QLD)

A quick report on Round 1 of the Gold Coast Premier league

Logo - Gold Coast FutsalThe Gold Coast Futsal Premier League kicked off at Varsity College. All players and officials looked sensational in their uniforms. The night started with a thrilling 4-4 draw between Ashmore City and Inter GC. The teams went tit for tat as both teams demonstrated their fire power infront of goal. If the first game was any indication of things to come the spectators were in for a treat.

The Second game of the night was a hard fort 9-5 victory to Carrara United over Ashmore PCYC. United took a big early lead, until PCYC lifted the tempo of their game and went on a goal scoring rampage only to fall short as united showed their class and held on.

The Last game of the round when to Bond Allstars 7-3 against Carrara FC. The game was in the balance at 3-3 with only 10 minutes left of the game, untill a few mistakes and first night nerves crept into FC’s game and with a late flurry of goals, The Allstars overwelmed FC and took first night honours.

If the first round of the competition is any indication of the speed, skill and action, the players, administrators and fans are in for a teat. Keep up to date with results and news, see you all at round 2.

New Strategic plan to ensure future is bright (Solomon Islands)

Long term plans discussed for Futsal in the OFC

Logo - Solomon StarThe Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and FIFA Technical staff have come together in Auckland this week to discuss long terms strategic plans for football, futsal and beach soccer.

OFC Technical Director Jim Selby, FIFA Assistant Development Officer Patrick Jacquemet, Referee Development Officer Massimo Raveino, Referee Instructor Neil Poloso and FIFA Futsal Instructor Scott Gilligan are all working towards developing the OFC Technical Department Strategic Development Plan for 2009 – 2012.

Selby says the workshops have been invaluable in terms of brainstorming new ideas.

“As a result of these discussions, we’ve been able to modify existing technical activities so that we ensure the best possible outcomes for OFC and each Member Association (MA),” says Selby.

“It’s about identifying issues that may hinder development in our respective areas and then collectively finding solutions.”

Workshop topics have included the structure, content, delivery and assessment criteria for OFC Coach and Referee Accreditation Courses.

Selby says the group has also discussed development pathways and methods of mentoring MA Course Instructors, players, coaches and referees.

Scott Gilligan, who joined OFC late last year as the Win in Oceania Futsal Project Manager, says the workshop has helped to build unity within the group.

“We are all working in different areas but the principles in terms of development are the same,” says the former Australian Futsal Coach.

“I know that my strategies for futsal are in line with the overall strategies of the OFC Technical Department and that gives me confidence in what I’m doing.

“We have established effective communication so that we can assist each other in achieving our individual goals.”

Selby says he is excited about developing the new strategic plan and believes it will ensure the continued development of football, futsal, beach soccer within Oceania. – OFC

Football NSW Futsal Youth Academy underway

Rob Varela the current Coaching & Development officer speaks about the exciting new Youth Academy program.

Rob Varela (left) Youth Academy Technical Advisor

Rob Varela (left) Youth Academy Technical Advisor

Why has the Youth Academy been setup?

RV: The main aim is to produce a team that will assist the Men Thunder team in their preparations for the AFC Club Championship in July 2009. However, we also want to produce players that will eventually become the athletes for our future All Age State teams by fast tracking their physical, tactical and technical development, and we want to utilize this program as the blueprint for future programs extending across other age groups and gender

How often is the Squad getting together?

RV: We train once a week in a 2 hour session at Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood on Monday nights. The sessions are very intense, as we attempt to emulate the physical effort that is required to compete at the elite Men’s level. We have identified two main areas of improvement when our teams compete at international level: inability to maintain the necessary level of intensity throughout games and difficulties in retaining possession when faced by pressure defence. Our program, based on the Spanish system of Youth training, is designed to improve those two areas by the use of very high intensity integrated training focusing on specific game situations.

Why did the Youth Academy adopt the Spanish system? Why not use a Brazilian or other European setup?

RV: The Spanish system emphasizes a team oriented game based on a very good and solid tactical approach underpinned by an extremely sound technique that can be reproduced under pressure, albeit without exhibiting the ball wizardry of Brazilian teams but very coachable and suited to our players.

How were the Youth Academy players Selected?

RV: To put the squad together we targeted athletes with the potential and desire to improve their knowledge of the game with a view to All Age representation in the future. We looked for players with the necessary willingness to work and learn and who had demonstrated the correct attitude. The bulk of the players were drawn from the Youth Thunder and Lightning teams who competed at the Nationals last January and some players recommended by their club coaches.

What coaching staff is involved in training these young athletes?

RV: We have managed to put together a very experienced and capable team who are very committed to the success of the program. Archie Kazas looks after the physical fitness aspect of the squad. He has been conducting tests and he will put together individual training programs based on the results achieved. Steven Knight, Futsalroo Assistant Coach for the 2008 World Cup qualifiers, and David Saliba, 2009 Youth Thunder Coach, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the set up. What makes this an exciting situation is that, even though we all have our own ideas, we are united in the way we want to see the squad play and the methodology that we employ.

Can you see any of the Youth Academy players playing in the Men’s Thunder side at next year’s Nationals?

RV: That is a difficult question to answer. There are some very good players in the current men’s squad, but having said that we hope that the Academy members, given a reasonable rate of improvement, will be pushing the incumbents.

Are there any players in the academy we should look out for in the future?

RV: The squad is very even in terms of ability and all the boys have shown a great deal of commitment so far. It is difficult to predict the individual rate of improvement but I am sure that the players’ clubs and the sport in general will reap the benefits.

With two sessions under your belt, how have the sessions gone?

RV: We are very pleased with the way the training is progressing. We have prepared a very comprehensive training plan, the effort the players are asked to put in is quite demanding and so far they have all been very good in their response.

Are there opportunities for Futsal coaches to come down and learn at these sessions?

RV: Very soon we will be extending invitations to coaches to attend and watch the sessions with a view to improve their understanding of the content being taught and the methodology used. I would hope that the coaches will avail themselves of this opportunity to improve their knowledge of the game.

There have been a few rumours that the Youth Academy may play in the Winter State League; do you think this will be a good idea?

RV: That is a possibility. If it comes off the benefits will be two fold: the coaches will be able to ascertain the boy’s progress in a competitive environment and it will give me the opportunity to gage the coaches’ performance and to provide them with beneficial feedback.

Will there be a Girls Academy setup similar to what is in place for the Boys / Men’s?

RV: As I said before we want to use this program as a blueprint for the future and I would personally like to see it expanded to cover other age groups as well. It is by no means perfect, and we have identified some changes that can be made, but I honestly think that we are on the right track and this is not to devalue previous endevours.
