Lachlan’s passion for soccer the real deal
Victorian youngster finds Futsal sparks his interest

SPECIAL PASSION: Lachlan Dawson just can't get enough of soccer.
Lachlan Dawson loves his soccer.
And after just four competitive matches with the Ballarat Academy of Soccer, Lachlan’s proud mother Nicole believes it is a passion that her son will continue for many years to come.
Nicole, a single mother of five, said her son had become attached to soccer like no other sport he had previously tried.
“He just can’t get enough of it,” she said.
“He started playing Futsal last year and absolutely loved it. He fell in love with the whole soccer thing and now he can’t get enough of it.”
Nicole said Lachlan had played for Ballarat Football Club in an under-10 competition, but had now opted against the traditional Australian game for what appears to be his true sporting love.
“He was great at footy and just loves sport in general, but there is just something about soccer that really took over,” she said.
“I am just really proud of him and that’s why I nominated him for this. He is just a great kid.”
Lachlan is now in his third season of futsal – an indoor version of the outdoor game – with a team from his school – St Thomas More Primary School.
The grade five student, who has ambitions of playing for A-League club Melbourne Victory and even representing the Socceroos, has also been selected for a Ballarat Regional Squad.
Ballarat will play against teams from around the state in Swan Hill during the upcoming school holidays.

FNSW Winter State League Appointments
Appointments for the next three rounds of the Football NSW Futsal Winter State League have been published on the NSWFRA web site
Appointments for the next three rounds of the Football NSW Futsal Winter State League have been published on the NSWFRA web site. Each round will give an opportunity to a blend of youth and experience while honing the skills of those referees wanting to step to the next level in their futsal refereeing.
State League Referee of the year Gavin Lee will make his first appearance at the Premier Football NSW Futsal competition this Monday when he joins Super League Men’s Grand Final Referee Wayne Ranson and Laura Elliott on the touch lines. Former FIFA referee Rob Porritt and FFA Nationals Men’s Final referee Darius Turner will team up with 2006 State League Referee of the Year Brendon Skinner to officiate on the other pitch.
May 25th continues the trend of Premier League players past and present moving to the role of official with FIFA referee Scott Kidson and Ross Fazzalaro in action. Premier League Grand Final referees Jonathon Moore and Peter Wilson-Mosey along with the experienced Bruce Bailey and Mark Jones complete the crew for May’s final round.
The new month brings FIFA Referee Ryan Shepheard to Homebush where he will join Khaled Aly and Darren Allatt in controlling one half of the fourth round of the competition. Young Referee of the Year from last year, Nick Backo, will team with a former winner of the same award Sam McIntosh. Along with Gordon McOrist, the trio will take charge of the second pitch to round out the first third of the competition
The Winter Super League gives referees the opportunity to continue to officiate on a high quality competition while giving excellent development opportunities to those referees hoping to move up the ranks in the State Leagues as the full club competition returns in October.
Due to the high number of referees requesting to be appointed to this competition, the number of opportunities for each referee to be appointed will be limited.

Kurukuru finalise squad this week
The Solomon Islands will soon announce the 12 players chosen for the OFC Futsal Championship in July
The National Kurukuru Futsal are expected to name their final squad this week in preparation for the Oceania Futsal Championship in Fiji this year.
The Oceania championship will only feature four countries after New Zealand and Tahiti have withdrawn their participation.
The championship is scheduled for July 5-11 and will be hosted in the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
Solomon Islands Futsal Development Officer and Kurukuru Team coach Victor Wai’i said 22 players have been undergoing intensive training for the championship.
But the squad will be trimmed to 12 players who will travel to the championship, he said.
Wai’i said the selection of the final squad will coincide with the presence of OFC Futsal Development Officer Scott Gilligan who will be in the country to conduct a Futsal Coaching Clinic under the Win in Oceania project, this month.
“This is just an Oceania Championship which was hosted every year and not a qualifier.
“But it is important for the Kurukuru in their preparation to defend the Oceania title,” he said.
The current training squad comprises of old players who played in last year’s Oceania qualifiers and the World Cup, and some new faces that are recently drafted.
It has been hinted that Kurukuru inspirational captain Elliot Ragomo and key player Jack Whitney are likely to make the final squad.
Their inclusion will pose a threat. Previously, they have earned admiration in Fiji during the Oceania Qualifiers.
Meanwhile, the host Fiji have announced their extended squad that will go into trials ahead of the championship.
Fiji Futsal Secretary told Fijilive Fiji was lacking behind in preparation for the meet and they are trying their best to mould and field a formidable team in the tourney.
“We are facing some problems in assembling the squad and organizing training sessions as the players are scattered around the country and the gymnasium courts booked for other events.”
“It’s a bit difficult in Fiji to have only specific players involved in FUTSAL as all players play full code football therefore their availability for 5-a-side commitments becomes a concern for us.”
“Despite our problems, we had our first training session in Suva yesterday and preparations will
intensify from next week.”
“The southern players will train under coach Intiaz Khan on Tuesdays and Thursdays while the western and northern players in the meantime will be training under the guidance of our development officers.”
“We have a mix of young and experienced players and should be able to form a formidable team for the championship,” added Sukhu.
Brandon sees brazilians master beautiful game (QLD)
17 year old Brandon Harvey comments on his trip to Brazil with Vikings
Brazil is the home of the beautiful game and after his recent trip to that country Brandon Harvey can see why that is so.
The 17-year-old was a member of an Australian Vikings squad which travelled to South America to play Futsal against the country that has helped make the sport popular.
Brandon, a defender with Nerimbera in its local Capricornia premier team for the eleven-a-side game, has only played Futsal for a short time, taking up the sport for fitness rather than having designs on making a national squad.
“I was picked for Queensland Schools and then the Vikings,” the Rockhampton Grammar School student explained.
Squads of 15 boys and 15 girls made the journey, with the Vikings making its base at Belo Horizonte, a city of about three million inhabitants.
As with most visitors to South America, Brandon was a little surprised at the passion for football held by everyone he met.
“Even 10-year-olds had the skills and tricks,” he recalled.
The trip was not about playing games and carrying out sightseeing. Brandon said while in Belo Horizonte the squad was coached by some of Brazil’s finest Futsal coaches, men who have made that country the world leader in the sport.
While in awe of some of the skills opponents possessed, Brandon found out that the Brazilians also had a tactical awareness which made them even harder to beat.
“In the first half (of games) it was close, but in the second they pulled away,” he recalled.
“We tried to mark man-to-man, but once they worked us out they changed their plan.
“Most of the teams we played had at least one outstanding player.
With the Vikings facing tough opposition it was satisfying for the Rockhampton player to return home as his team’s leading scorer.
The squad viewed the sights including a visit to Rio and an overview of that city from Cristo Redentor, but what was his favourite memory?
“The first half of our last game; we were 1-0 down and I scored a penalty to get us back in the game,” he said with a grin.
Now Brandon hopes to combine the two sports, gaining selection for a Vikings tour of China while progressing his 11-a-side game through the Young Cougars with an eye towards the North Queensland Fury.
