Nat flies in from Brazil (NSW)
14 year old Nat Caldwell is progressing well as a representative Futsal keeper

Nat Caldwell 4th from left
NAT FLIES IN FROM BRAZIL WITH HIS FUTSAL FEET FIRMLY ON THE GROUND
It’s roughly a year ago that Futsal Goal Keeper, Nat Caldwell started to raise his public profile both locally and nationally. Futsal is the name for indoor 5 aside soccer that is played with a smaller, hard, non- bounce ball. Nat – now with skull and cross bones eyebrow piercing has just returned as one of two Australian Goal Keepers who attended the Vikings Australian Futsal tour of Brazil. Players were selected from across Australia, Nat was the only player selected from NSW.
Originally the tour was to include Chile and Argentina but one week before take off due to the swine flu outbreaks and closure of schools it was decided that the tour would be confined to the South of Brazil. Tour organizer Juliana Oliveira, from Vikings Futsal pulled out all stops to ensure that our Aussie boys had the best training and competition experience.
Nat’s playing highlight of the tour was in the first game – a friendly against Brazil in Vernopolis, where he was chosen by the Brazil side to play as their Goal Keeper. Nat conceded one goal to his fellow Aussies, his Brazilian team winning the game. Nat now wears his goal keeping shirt from that game proudly. The rest of the three week tour, our Aussies were unable to beat Brazil, we did draw once. The team learnt a lot of Futsal game tactics and new training techniques from the masters of the sport.
The team experienced the thrill of being introduced to the crowd at the Brazilian International Stadium and then proudly walked a lap of the honor with the Australian flag, whilst our National Anthem was played with our boys in their green and gold colors before being interviewed by Television, Radio and Sports International Magazine. The team then became a part of the crowd and joined in the atmosphere of the Brazilians intensity when watching Brazil International verse Sao Paulo. Our boys merged with the crowd and yelled “goooooool” as they rushed forward in a running wave imitating the locals from a secured area. Learning lots of life lessons along the way including how lucky we are to live in Australia. Nat was shocked to see barbwire and the use of moats to keep crowds at bay during soccer games even at international events.
After landing back in Australia and having two weeks recovery Nat has been back in training and has been the only Northern Rivers Futsal player selected to represent Northern NSW as Goal Keeper at the Vikings National Futsal School Championships held at the end of September in Melbourne. The Northern NSW region is from Port Macquarie, Taree north to the Queensland border. Attending training, Nat just turning fourteen, will be playing up a year in the 15’s age group yesterday at Coffs Harbor the team is under the experienced eye of Alison Fazzolar, who has coached winning teams in the Quantas National Soccer Championships.
Nat is grateful to the local community who have supported him by buying raffle tickets, Newrybah Produce and The Park Hotel for supporting him. Nat still takes time out to enjoy a beef burger at “The Park.” Nat also recognizes the efforts of his physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor, Ryan Huxley and Personal Trainer Nathan Collins for their persistence and patience…..and his mum for her support. Nat attends school through Southern Cross Distance Education that allows him to continue school whilst following a strict training timetable. After attending the National Schools Titles, Nat will compete in the Vikings National Club and Team Titles in Sydney in January and the Pacific Titles in Easter. In 2010 Nat will return to Brazil for more intensive training and tour the UK returning to the David Beckham Academy in London, who first identified his goal keeping skills.
After a successful change of administration and location of their head NSW office to Goonellabah, Vikings Futsal has experienced a serge of enthusiasm from locals. Nat enjoys the faster game of Futsal to outdoor soccer and the team comradery and sportsmanship learned from older players like NSW Coordinator, Ashley Collins who give back to the sport. For Vikings Futsal sign-on’s in Goonellabah, Lismore, Lennox Head, Byron and Mullumbimby contact James Watson on 0458 431 074.

NZ U/17 win Foshan Cup
The New Zealand boys doing well so far in their Futsal tour of China
The Vikings NZ U/17 side ran out winners at the Foshan Cup with a solid display of Futsal. After winning there first game 9-1 the boys backed it up with a 5-1 victory in their first game on Sunday with goals to Marcus Livingston 3, Trent Wales 1 and Scott McElroy 1. With the temperature hitting 40c the boys took on their next opponent and ran out of legs, energy and faced some interesting referee calls. In the end they went down 1-4 but showed huge heart as players struggled in the extreme heat.
The side had Monday as a much needed rest day and headed to Guangzhou for a spot of shopping and an evening dinner cruise on the Pearl River. The cruise took you past huge skycrappers that turned into the biggest video screens that anyone had seen. The night sky was lit up with fork lightening that added to the cruise and brought a much needed drop in temperature.
Today (Tuesday) the boys visited an active 500 year old kiln and had a chance to buy some of the pottery on offer. From here the side went for their sixth game on tour against Foshan University. The University side was easily the best side they had come up against on tour but the boys finally put all their training into good use. Defensively in the first half they were perfect and just before the break Dan Williamson scored from a free kick.
The second half started at a blistering pace but the boys held tight and repelled any attacks from Foshan until a quick turnover finally saw Foshan Uni get on the board. 5 minutes later they scored again to take the lead but this only inspired the New Zealanders to dig deeper. The rest of the half was all New Zealand as they attacked with everything. Finally after some great team build up work Dan Williamson slotted his second to tie the game.
The game ended a draw (2 all) but the Kiwi’s were unlucky not to snatch the win when Scott McElroy had a header cannon off the crossbar with the keeper beaten and only 15 seconds to play.
In the end it was a great result for the team and one they will want to build upon for the rest of the tour.

Gilligan here to assist Fiji Futsal
Scott Gilligan working with the Fiji Football Association to improve Futsal in the country
Former Australian FUTSAL coach Scott Gilligan is in the country to assist the Fiji Football Association in setting up a proper development structure for the abbreviated code of the game which has immensely gained popularity.
Gilligan who is currently attached with Oceania Football Confederation as a FUTSAL Development Officer has been actively involved in designing and monitoring programs in the Island nations, namely the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.
He is currently conducting a weeklong workshop in Suva for local coaches to broaden their coaching skills.
Fiji FA chief executive officer Bob Kumar said more than 35 local coaches participating in the workshop should learn a lot from Gilligan.
“We are honored to have Scott as he is the most qualified Futsal coach in the region and has done wonders with the Island nations where he has worked with the local coaches.”
“We are happy he accepted our invite and is in the country to assist us and the local coaches should take full advantage of the workshop with him.”
“Fiji FA is serious about developing Futsal and raising awareness of the sport and will also develop its own pitch in the new academy in Suva.”
“Apart from working with the participants at the workshop, he will also work closely with national coaching director Saiyad Ali and other development officers, sharing his knowledge and experience in the sport” he concluded.
NSWFRA Getting Ready for the New Season (NSW)
The Referees about to preside over the upcoming NSW Premier and Super Leagues are being put through their paces just like the players
It’s not just players and clubs that are put through their paces during the last month before the start of the season.
NSWFRA referees who will be officiating in the Football NSW Futsal Premier and Super Leagues have a big month ahead of them for September as well, with compulsory fitness testing, seminars, the commencement of fortnightly training and the odd trial game too.
For season 2009/10, the NSWFRA will publish a list of up to 50 referees who will make up the NSWFRA Advanced Referees Panel. Of these referees, 22 will make up the Select and Supplementary 1 Groups, all of which will be required to pass fitness testing twice throughout the season and attend 3 physical and technical training sessions each month.
With Advanced Referees Panel nominations scheduled to close on the 4th September, pre-season fitness tests are scheduled for the 10th, 13th and 15th of September across the Sydney metropolitan area.
The pre-season program culminates with the Advanced Referees Panel seminar on the 18th September where referees will be issued with information and directives for the new season and the first physical training session on the 29th September.
Expected areas of focus for NSWFRA referees are disciplinary standards across all age divisions, the correct use of away and goalkeeper jerseys, violent conduct and serious foul play.
NSWFRA President Gavin Lee said that he was looking forward to yet another step up in standards of refereeing and professionalism for the coming season.
“Once again, we’ve raised the bar a little higher for our referees and I expect, like last year, our referees will rise to the challenge, resulting in even better officiating”, Lee said.
