‘Futsal 4 All’ Cup – A competition for athletes with disabilities (NSW)

A new structure is in place that enables athletes with disabilities the opportunity to play alongside mainstream futsal competitions

An exciting venture has commenced in 2009 that creates a pathway for athletes with disabilities to be a part of the futsal community. Called the Futsal 4 All cup, the competition involves teams from; Thornleigh, Five Dock, Parramatta, Sutherland, Upper North Shore, Penrith and the Eastern Suburbs as well as regional centres of Orange, Illawarra and the Blue Mountains.

A steering committee made up of Tim Genzo and Rob Varella (Football NSW - Futsal) Kelly Oldfield (NSW Sport and Recreation) Kelly Fishburn and Greg Brown (Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care) have set in place a structure that enables athletes with disabilities the opportunity to play alongside mainstream futsal competitions.

The competition commenced with skills days run by Rob Varella from Football NSW that then proceeded to our competitions days. These are run every 2nd month and we have currently run 2 days at Dural and Bankstown – both outstanding successes. We are now gearing up for the State Titles in Oct / Nov where we will have 8 teams competing in 2 divisions out at Windsor. At this competition we will be selecting a State team to compete in the National Futsal competition in Canberra in 2010.

Successful candidates of the Level 1 Certificate

As well as having started our program this year we have had 20 of our athletes complete a Level 1 coaching certificate which is an outstanding achievement.

This has been an absolutely amazing start to what we hope will be an ever increasing competition. Indeed, we hope to expand the base next year and have already put in place an exciting competition and a goal of reaching International competition in the near future. The response of the athletes has been sensational and the goodwill and spirit of cooperation between Football NSW, Department of Sport and Recreation and the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care as well as the numerous volunteers has been inspiring.

We look forward to meeting as many people as possible at the State Competition in October / November at Windsor. Please come out and have a look at our games – we will amaze you!

    Which event were you at?

The winners and runners up of each event will play at the State c’ships at the end of the month with a view to take a NSW team to the Nationals.

It is a very satisfying project to be involved in!

I was at Dural. It was a well run day that appeared to be enjoyed immensely by the competitors. I’ll look out for the next ones.
