Dural Warriors maul old rivals Sydney Benfica (NSW)

Report on the Mens Premier League Match between Benfica and Dural

Dural Warriors 3 def. Sydney Benfica 0

The Dural Warriors picked up their second win of the new season against their old foes Benfica with a solid 3-0 victory. These two clubs have fought some titanic matches in the past when participating in the Super League but tonight Dural seemed to have the edge for the majority of the game.

Dural threatened Benfica’s goal in the opening minute when Rhys Giovenali cut in from the right and unleashed a fierce shot that keeper Josh Da Palma did well to parry away.

Minutes later the Warriors appealed in vain for a handball in the area against Marcelo De Andrade but the defender clearly did not have time to move his hand out of the way.

The Warriors were doing most of the pressing but Benfica were always dangerous especially on the break and nearly took the lead when Adrian Pandolfa outpaced his marker down the right side and his cross shot was almost turned in by Ahilan Ratnamohan at the far post.

Benfica threatened again with a well worked move when Osmar De Barros skipped around the outside of his marker passed the ball to Itaua Batista but his shot was well blocked by Ian Pemberton

Durals Ben Pollock came close when he received the ball with his back to goal and with a quick shimmy turned his defender expertly but his shot went just wide.

Adrian Pandolfa pounced on a loose ball but his shot was well blocked by Pemberton. Then just before half time Durals Ben Lawson ran forward and his long range shot was pushed over by Josh Da Palma. Neither side could break the deadlock so the two sides went to the break all tied up at 0-0.

The second half began like the first at a moderate pace with both sides intent on maintaining possession. An Osmar De Barros shot was saved by replacement keeper Josh Codrington and Josh Da Palma made a great block to deny Brett Stapylton.

Eight minutes into the second half and Dural broke the deadlock when the tireless Ben Lawson received the ball on the right side and cracked a brilliant low scorching drive across the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

The Warriors went further ahead when Brett Stapylton seized on a loose ball and with his back to goal and turned his marker and slammed ball past the keeper to make it 2-0.

The speed of the game intensified and the contest for the ball was keener as Benfica were forced to lift the pace of the game. Tackles flew in and a couple of yellow cards were issued to both sides.

Dural were continuing to attack even though they led 2-0 and with 8 minutes left to go Dural virtually put the game beyond doubt when Daniel Codrington received a cross court pass and popped up at the far post to smash the ball into the top corner to make it 3-0.

Benfica kept coming at Dural desperate to restore some pride with Batista, Ratnamohan, and Mark Pinto all having chances but in the end Benfica lacked the killer instinct in front of goal, the Warriors defence held firm and Benfica were kept scoreless on this occasion.

Warriors Coach Robert Varela commented that a big difference with Premier League is that there is never an easy match and pointed out that the side always needed to be on their game in order to win. Robert was delighted that so many local Youth players that they have been developing as a group over the years are stepping up and performing with credit in the Premier League.

Well done to Dural in the Mens, however I believe the overall club championship result on the day was 21-9 in Benfica’s favour!

Great to see both recently promoted clubs out of the relegation zone so far!!

I can only presume that you are from our men’s squad and I have a fair idea of who you are. Grow some balls and use your real name.

As stated at our presentation at the start of the year, last year is in the past.

You are only as good as your last game………………now that wasn’t good at all.

Take nothing away from Dural’s men, they deserved their win and did so with ease.

Time to train a little harder I say.

    Lorenzo D'Addona on October 20th, 2009 7:37 pm

Back to Super league for the warriors!

Talkin' Futsal on October 20th, 2009 8:50 pm

Talkin’ Futsal ….really think Dural will be relegated?

IMO both Dural and Benfica will do well this year.

Its going to be Commodores and Raiders who will struggle……IMO

    Futsaldad on October 20th, 2009 9:19 pm

females are very poor, youth and men over rated and so is the main coach!

Talkin' Futsal on October 20th, 2009 9:34 pm

Commodores look like favourites for relegation after losing most of their girls and prominent girls coach.

    Simon on October 20th, 2009 10:08 pm

Too much tradition & pride to get relegated!

Talkin' Futsal on October 20th, 2009 10:17 pm

cant believe your even discussing relegation after round 4….geez let the clubs play first.

    futsalwatcher on October 20th, 2009 10:23 pm

points dropped early are very hard to pick up later

Dural 12 Girls are the squad to beat.

    16 Girls are ok

Womens with their keeper are decent.

The fact that the 12G, 14G & women drew, means our girls are crap as well………I don’t think so !!

A little to early to call and a long long way to go !

    Lorenzo D'Addona on October 21st, 2009 6:59 am

    talking futsal,
have a look at last year club champs ladder ,
sydney city eagles were in the bottom 2 up until at least round 4, they ended up just missing out on winning club champions…..like i said, too early to be making predictions.

    futsalwatcher on October 21st, 2009 7:05 am

So you are comparing Dural with Sydney City……

Talkin' Futsal on October 21st, 2009 8:27 am

im comparing all the premier league clubs.

    futsalwatcher on October 21st, 2009 9:16 am

Talkin’ Futsal you’re an idiot. And your continual slating of Rob Varella is pathetic. I doubt very much you know a quarter of the game he does.

    Grow up.

    James on October 21st, 2009 9:41 am

    What does he know James?

Have you ever been coached by him or know someone who has?

He talks so much crap is not funny!

“He talks so much crap is not funny!”

That’s the pot calling to kettle black if I have ever heard it do so.

    James on October 21st, 2009 11:28 am

Just tell me what’s so good about him?

Talkin' Futsal on October 21st, 2009 11:39 am

talkin futsal, your really starting to sound like a sore loser, so your mens team lost against dural, big deal, move on to next week round and prepare your self to win the game.

    futsalwatcher on October 21st, 2009 11:48 am

They might’ve beaten Benfica but I am sure it was not because of good coaching!

    Who says I am a loser…

Talkin' Futsal on October 21st, 2009 12:17 pm

You guys are all adults, right? Probably a good idea to start acting like adults!
Every club is hunting for points, every week is another battle. I’m not that concerned who is struggling right now. I’m only worried about MY club and where we end up. That’s my challenge.
We at Benfica have another tough week with All Stars on Sunday at Menai. The youth game should be worth the price of admission by itself. Let’s hope that all the games are played in the right spirit.

Ross Anderson on October 21st, 2009 1:50 pm

    Benfica v Allstars Youth.

I just hope to see another goal like this one!

    Futsaldad

No need to watch it again. It’s etched in my brain.

It will be a cracker of a weekend.

    Lorenzo D'Addona on October 21st, 2009 6:50 pm

    Lorenzo take it easy.

    unknown on October 21st, 2009 8:57 pm

Regardless of the scoreline, Lorenzo is a winner because of his attitude. Talkin’ Futsal is a loser because of his attitude.

Talkin' Futsal on October 22nd, 2009 9:43 am

do you discriminate against Tanzania… another racist comment on forum……

    Tony on October 22nd, 2009 10:24 am

Some of my best friends come from Africa; but really, Tanzania are not a Futsal power, are they?

So Varela may get a job there…

Talkin' Futsal on October 22nd, 2009 10:56 am

Tony, do you think he should get the Futsalroos job? Please!!!!!!!!!!

Talkin' Futsal on October 22nd, 2009 10:57 am

can all you rob varela supporters please tell me what he has achieved at a coaching level for you all to thihnk he is such a great coach. has he won a state league? has he won a nationals with a state team? has he coached at a world cup? has he even been to watch a world cup? would love to know.

    futsalfanatic on October 23rd, 2009 9:19 am

Several state leagues victories, also at nationals and school Nationals, helped the Solomon Islands qualify for the 2008 World Cup.

Ask the people who have played in his teams if he is any good!

    What have you achieved futsalfanatic?

    GK on October 23rd, 2009 10:18 am

NSW achieved the best ever results at the 2009 Nationals.

    Paul on October 23rd, 2009 11:28 am

“What have you achieved futsalfanatic?” Obviously not much, other than whinge.

For the love of the game on October 23rd, 2009 12:12 pm

It always amuses me on these forums when some contributor who hides behind an alias starts slagging off someone who has contributed a lot more to the game than he/she has.
If you have a “Rob Varela” problem get yourself som etherapy and get over it. The guy does a hell of a lot more for futsal than you and your contributions to this forum.
Whinge, whinge, whinge. Never anything positive. Why don’t you take up lawn bowls and annoy the crap out of them?

Ross Anderson on October 23rd, 2009 2:09 pm

    Well said, RA.

For the love of the game on October 23rd, 2009 3:08 pm

Hey Paul, loved your observation about the NSW 2009 success. Do you really know who your opposition was ?

It was the weakest ever, lots of teams formed at the last minute from outdoor teams (most had never played Futsal before).

Dont get me wrong, I’m not bagging NSW (I am an ex NSW coach), just lets get it into perspective).

Until the FFA execute the findings of the review, bite the bullet and ask to join Vikings….both Nationals will be of weakened quality.

    F.Sala on October 23rd, 2009 5:32 pm

Well said Rossy haha. To even say Rob Varela isn’t a good coach is laughable. He helps so much in the game. If futsalfanatic and Talkin’ Futsal think they can do a better job why not come out and say who they are and then coach teams!

    Jake C on October 23rd, 2009 6:28 pm

to all you people who want to bag me go back and read what i wrote again. i never bagged rob varela at all you idiots. i am actually curious to know what rob has done for all of you to think he is such a great coach as i seen above other people were knocking him. i said i would love to know what he had done and won. is there anything wrong with wanting to find out his achievments so i too can become a supporter. if you go back and read my comments then maybe you will all decide that you jumped the gun a little in decicing to criticise what i wrote. and you people want to say i am negative. take a look at yourselves, beacuase i was negative, only curious. you clowns.

    futsalfanatic on October 24th, 2009 11:22 am

    @ futsalfanatic

If you really were a “futsalfanatic” you would be aware of what his teams have achieved not just in the last couple of seasons but for a very long time. So, do not try to cover your arse now!

    GK on October 24th, 2009 11:41 am

Give him a break GK. Ive been in futsal all my life but dont know Rob Varella (He probably doesn’t know me either ).
You find there are a lot of inferiority complexes on here (like Henky !) Most are justified.
Many are jealous of Vikings just because they achieve things…on their own. Even FNSWF staff admit they have been too lenient in accepting NO progress over the last decade or 3. But continue to do nothing about it. (Sorry, except “upset” a few FFA people ! lol)

    F.Sala on October 24th, 2009 2:58 pm

    @ F.Sala
Those comments were mine and I am not FNSWF staff. My comments were in response to Steve’s earlier comments about a National League, so please don’t miss quote me!

Frank Rossi on October 24th, 2009 8:57 pm

I apologize for misquoting and mispositioning you Frank. I thought sitting on a standing committee or standing on a sitting committee constituted “staff” in some small way !

So, pray tell Frank ,who have you “upset” so far and has it gained futsal anything positive in NSW ?

    F.Sala on October 24th, 2009 11:59 pm

Yes I think it has. As a member of the Standing Committee I was able to contact FFA directly and submitted a proposal for a National League. A proposal that is cost neutral to FFA. Initial reply from John Boultbee at FFA is positive but of course it depends on which of the other States could afford the cost and how many teams they’d each submit.

Frank Rossi on October 25th, 2009 7:10 am

    WoW !
