A Futsal soccer competition is being established in Martin later this month following the success of the sport in Perth’s western suburbs.
Futsal WA spokesman Tim Simpson said the association was keen to open up the sport in the southeast region following a successful first season of the Open Mens Futsal competition at Scotch College earlier this year.
Futsal has been described as Brazilian-style indoor soccer, but is not confined by nets or boards, and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It is the only form of indoor soccer that is officially approved by FIFA and Football Federation Australia (FFA).
Features of the five-a-side game include International FIFA Futsal Rules, 18-minute halves played on a 30m x 19m pitch and Vikings Futsal Registration, including player insurance cover.
There will be three seasons each year starting with a 16-week summer season in October with a four-week break over Christmas.
Divisions will include U12, U14, U16 boys and open mens.
“At this stage as we will accept team nominations from schools, clubs, community groups, friends or just interested individuals with a view to establishing school and club teams competitions, and tournaments into the future,” Mr Simpson said.
The competition will be coordinated by members of the Perth Cougars Futsal Team.
