Sunshine Coast’s own futsal champs (QLD)

Mountain Creek under-12 boys unbeaten at the Australasian Futsal Championships at the Gold Coast

Mountain Creek State School’s under-12 boys and girls futsal teams have good reason to smile.

Mountain Creek State School’s under-12 boys and girls futsal teams have good reason to smile.

The Mountain Creek State School under-12 boys futsal team has conquered all in winning the Australasian Futsal Championships at the Gold Coast.

Mountain Creek was unbeaten in its eight matches, played against the best teams from Victoria, NSW, Queensland and New Zealand.

The Sunshine Coast school beat Grace Lutheran College, from Brisbane, 6-4 in the final.

Mountain Creek State School futsal co-ordinator David Hooper, 43, said the final had been tough.

“They (Grace) scored the first goal, so our boys were in unfamiliar territory, but they dug deep,” he said.

“We seemed to always be one or two goals ahead.

“It was a pretty bruising match and a couple of our kids were knocked around, but they soldiered on.”

Hooper said the championships had tested the team.

“We didn’t know what to expect from the opposition as they were the best from around the country,” he said.

“There was a couple of tight matches that we pulled through. It was very rewarding.”

Mountain Creek captain Jacob Fulluck, Jacob Connelly and Liam Appleyard were selected in the all-star team, which will tour overseas next year.

The school’s under-12 girls qualified for their respective final, but lost to St Andrew’s Lutheran College 5-1.

Sporting a helmut and fluoro jacket Mosman Mayor Anne Connon helped start construction on the council’s $3.5 million Drill Hall Sports Centre in Cross St.

The new multi-purpose sporting complex will feature bike and walking paths plus a hall with one indoor court, which would be used for netball, wheelchair basketball, hockey and futsal (indoor soccer).

The project – due for completion in August 2010 – is being supported by a $2 million grant from the Federal Government’s community infrastructure project.

Cr Connon said the new centre had been designed to be “sympathetic” to the heritage-listed 1917 drill hall building.

“This exciting project has a great environmental theme,” she said.

“Not only will much of the material from the site be used at the old Rawson Park netball courts, but it will also form new landscaping creating a link to the neighbouring Sydney Harbour Federation Trust area.” The council will manage the project with help from specialist consultants.

Fiji’s Interest is good news (Solomon Islands)

Victor Waii views Fiji’s interest in a Solomon Islands Futsal coach as a positive thing

Logo - Solomon StarA former national futsal coach, Victor Waii, says it is good news Fiji is interested in signing a Solomon Islander to coach their national futsal team.

He made the comment following reports that Fiji is looking to sign a futsal coach from Solomon Islands.

Waii, who now works as a futsal and beach soccer development officer for the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), said they have not receive any request yet from Fiji but this is a good news for futsal in the country.

“This shows that Solomon Islands has been recognised for its dominance in futsal in the region,” said Waii, who led the Kurukuru team to the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil.

Fiji national futsal team director told the Fijitimes Online, they are hoping to sign a Solomon Islands coach in their bid to win the next Oceania Football Confederation Futsal Championship.

“I see no reason why we can’t qualify for a Futsal World Cup.

“Solomon Islands has been dominating Oceania for so long and yet they don’t have a proper futsal facility while we have very good facilities.

“Solomon Island has made great progress in futsal and beach soccer.

“They have set high standards in Oceania and we shouldn’t be ashamed to seek assistance since they are better than us.

“Navua has fielded two of Solomon Islands’ best players in James Naka (beach soccer) and Jack Wetney (futsal) at major tournaments.

“We need to be economical because we can’t afford going beyond Oceania to look for coaches.

“Through my connections I know qualified coaches in Solomon Islands who can do a better job with the national futsal team,” he said.

Wright : The Sydney F-League ‘Can only help the Futsalroos’

Futsalroos and NSW Thunder Captain Lachlan Wright puts his weight behind the Sydney F-League

f-league-logo3bFutsalroos and NSW Thunder Captain Lachlan Wright has added his voice to those backing the value of the new Sydney F-League.

Recovering from a knee injury, Wright has been coaching the Inner West Allstars in the NSW Futsal Premier League but is looking forward to a return to the pitch.

“The Sydney F-League will give me the opportunity to return to top fitness and confidence through playing futsal after going through a knee reconstruction”, Wright said.

But the effects will be farther reaching according to the flanker who made his debut for Australia in 1999. Wright believes that The Sydney F-League’s stop clock timing gives players the chance to steel for the rigours of top competition.

“Whenever the Futsalroos have played in tournaments we have usually competed against world class opposition for the first 20-25 minutes of each half. The next 10-20 minutes is when we copped most of our goals. The major reason for this was mentally switching off because of lack of experience in stop clock situations.

“With The Sydney F-League playing international rules it will give our top players and coaches valuable experience in dealing with those situations and that can only help the Futsalroos.”

Wright also agreed with the timing of the league. “The Sydney F-League is timed perfectly in the middle of Australia’s qualifiers and the AFC tournament in Uzbekistan. This will give me the opportunity to play stop clock futsal matches consistently before the AFC tournament.”

“I believe that The Sydney F-League will become the most professional futsal competition around” Wright concluded.

Applications for entry to The Sydney F-League for the 2010 season close on 29 January 2010.
