The fast footwork frenzy that is futsal is becoming one of Grafton’s most popular sports.

The indoor soccer game, created in Uruguay, involves teams of five and has been described as basketball with your feet.

It is the fastest growing indoor sport on the planet, played by an estimated 30 million people globally.

It’s an ideal way to improve your football skills, it’s fast-paced and it provides non-stop action for spectators.

Grafton Sports Centre manager Sarah Baker said futsal was one of the most popular sports played at the indoor stadium.

“Futsal has really taken off this year, with 28 teams competing from under-12s through to seniors,” Baker said.

“We have male and senior mixed teams on Wednesday night, with juniors starting at 3.45pm and seniors finishing at 9pm.”

Baker said the feedback from kids and parents has been positive.

“The kids love the game, and it’s a chance for them to improve their soccer skills during the off-season of outdoor soccer,” she said.

Nathanial Lavelle-Skinner, who has recently taken up futsal as a sport, plays in the junior competition and looks forward to playing with his mates each week.

“It’s a really great sport … it’s quick and keeps you fit … and it’s a good game to have fun with your mates. I wish we could play three times a week,” he said.
