News from Sydney Benfica FC (NSW)
A season-in-progress summary from Benfica
The Season So Far – Merry Xmas & Happy New Year
As we enter the home straight, with Round 12 in front of us, Sydney Benfica FC are sitting in 6th position in the Club Championship. The challenge for the club is to maintain momentum and push for 5th spot.
It has been an immense learning curve for the club, with many, many obstacles to overcome. The year at a glance had the club losing their major sponsor and their home ground.
The constant battle with outdoor, has resulted in many of our teams not training.
I would like to thank all players, parents and officials for their patience and understanding. After a successful season last year. This year has been a tough slog, with everyone sticking together. I guess our culture still remains intact.
Our 12 Boys and Youth Men are sitting 2nd in their respective competitions, whilst our 16 Girls are in 4th in their competition. The 16 Boys are 3 points out of the Top 4 and will push hard in the final three rounds.
Our senior teams men’s and women’s have had a mixed bag. Our Men’s have been decimated by injuries and departures, however, they have lost approx 6 games by a goal or two. Many of our youth men’s have stepped up into the cauldron, standing them in good sted for next season. Our Women’s have performed admirably, losing many a tight game.
The 12 Girls started the season on fire and have since lost several games by the narrowest of margins. The most improved team in the club are without doubt the 14 Girls. They have toiled away week in week out and finally last weekend pulled 5 points for the club. Their heart and determination is second to none. Must be the quality coaching from Costa and Mario ……..not. The 14 Boys have had it tough, but are playing some great futsal in the second half of the competition, with several of the 12 Boys backing up for the side.
Our Benfica Academy portray amazing skills week after week. They are a joy to watch.
Last but not least, we would like to wish all players, parents and officials a Merry Christmas and a joyful prosperous New Year.
Good luck to all our State Representatives in the FFA Futsal Nationals, which will take place in Canberra from the 11th – 15th January 2010.
