Calcio 90 on top!
Bad Beats and newcomers, Calcio 90, got off to winning ways last night in the Mens Social competition. There were some very rusty and tired looking players on the court….most were still recovering from their Christmas dinners and holidays, by the looks of their waist lines! However,no doubt with a few more games the sharpness will reappear in the players! Bad Beats pipped Salsa in a re match of last season’s final 5-2. Calcio 90 came from behind to beat a tired Red Devils outfit 7-5. CFC had the bye this week. There will be some double headers coming up, when all of the players are more fit!
MFL KICKS OFF SOON!
The Pirates Academy is in full swing, with the Academy’s MFL teams getting ready for the conclusion of the 2009 season and then the new 2010 season! New players are always welcome. Just contact Mark.

High hopes for Fiji futsal
Fiji FUtsal Commission wants Fiji to dethrone Solomon Islands as Futsal champs
Fiji have set their sights on dethroning the Solomon Islands Kurukuru team at the OFC Futsal Championship later this year.
This is the target set by the Fiji Futsal Commission which is working overtime with assistance from Oceania futsal development manager Scott Gilligan in order to select a strong squad.
Commission secretary Jainendra Sukhu told Fiji Football Associaition that local players will need to prove themselves in order to book a spot in the national side for this year’s OFC championship which will be hosted by Fiji in August.
Gilligan, a former Australian national coach and player, is in the country conducting a level one and two futsal coaching course. Sukhu says Gilligan will be of great assistance.
Players have been invited to a three day trial starting next Tuesday at the Tattersall Leisure Centre in Suva.
“The Fiji FA Futsal Commission, with the assistance of our technical director Saiyad Ali and Scott Gilligan, are trying to select a strong squad to tackle the OFC futsal champions, the Solomons.
“All players, including the national futsal reps, will have to come and fight for their position in the Fiji national futsal team. I’m requesting those who have been named and other interested players to attend the trial as no one’s position is guaranteed, irrespective of whether they were a national futsal rep earlier.
“The OFC qualifiers for the futsal world cup will be held in 2011 and the OFC Futsal Championship this year in August will be a good test for our national team to prove where we stand on,” Sukhu said.
Fiji lost to Solomon Islands 8-1 in the OFC Futsal Championship final last year. Sukhu said they were determined to go a step further this year. He added that support from the various districts was vital in their campaign.
“We need the support of the districts to see that their players are released for this important trial. There are more players playing futsal now, especially in Western and Northern Divisions but not from here in the South. We will have good quality players invited to attend the three day trials at in Suva,” he said.

Goalkeepers flock to the Sydney F-League (NSW)
Any and all players should send in their player information now!!
It’s the only position on the pitch that you can’t play without. They are the men that stand between you and glory. They are a special, often considered crazy, breed that even have special shirts. They are goalkeepers – and it seems The Sydney F-League will have no shortage of them when the season kicks off on April 10th.
Since asking for players who are without a club to come forward, The Sydney F-League team has been inundated with resumes – from Goalkeepers. No fewer than six shot stoppers from the Premier and Super League have expressed their interest in the few hours after the story hit Futsal4All.com.au.
Shane Borg (Botany Bay Pirates), Mark Brackenrig (Inner West Allstars), Elliot Jurd (Northern Tigers), Dan Kennedy (APIA Leichhardt Tigers) and Michael Sprang (Commodores FCB) have all put their names in the frame along with Nicholas Moye (Botany Bay Pirates)
With ages ranging from sixteen to thirty-six, every applicant has representative experience playing for New South Wales at some time or another. They also share a common desire to play top level futsal all year round and test themselves against the best players that the state has to offer.
“With each club having to nominate at least two and up to three goalkeepers, we hope that we can help to provide some names for clubs who may be struggling to fill the most specialised position on the pitch” league General Manager, Paul Respicio said.
“It’s certainly encouraging to see so much interest from the goalkeeping fraternity in being a part of the League’s inaugural year. We hope any player interested in taking part in the league who doesn’t have a club, will send a playing resume to us. We may know who you are, but the clubs like to see some stats on paper and they may not know your complete history” Respicio added.
Entries for The Sydney F-League close today.

Gold Coast Futsal wins Craig Foster Cup (QLD)
A writeup from Gold Coast futsal on their fortunes at the Craig Foster Cup
Gold Coast Futsal is the inaugural champion of the Craig Foster Futsal Challenge Cup following last Saturday’s splendid event at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium, edging out Brisbane Magic Futsal by 16 goals.
Both clubs completed the group matches with 19 points each, four ahead of Futsal North Coast from NSW, but it was the superior goal scoring machine of the Gold Coast sides that won it for them.
Despite missing out on the prize, Brisbane Magic Futsal did pick up three grand final victories with the under 10s, 11s and 12s each collecting the winners medal.
On a scorching hot summer’s day, the crowd’s turned out to see former Socceroo and SBS Television identity Craig Foster open the tournament and watch some great entertaining Futsal from our juniors, while the open men’s teams showed true class in their event.
In 24 matches played 246 goals were scored, an average of just over 10 goals a game. A perfect advertisement for the game.
The pleasing aspect of the day was the high level of sportsmanship on show from all participating teams despite the stakes that were on offer.
It was Futsal played at its best and everyone present witnessed a great event.
Troy Bingham, Marketing Director of Gold Coast Futsal was pleased with the tournament.
“Thanks very much for a professionally run and managed tournament. It had all the qualities for a successful day: Craig Foster was on hand at the start, everything was clearly communicated and the tournament started on time.
“The officials were all professional and games were kept on time throughout the day. The presence of Gold Coast United players was great for the kids and trophy presentation with the players was fantastic. All in all we had a very enjoyable day at an event that was professional from start to finish”.
Andrew Parkes, Managing Director of Gold Coast Futsal put in a great effort to have this event up and running.
“I would like to specifically mention the incredible sportsmanship, skill and team unity that was displayed by the teams . Comments and praise are flowing through from people who attended along with officials and organizers of the event with the terrific behavior and discipline that was displayed by all the kids on the day.
“I am very proud to have hosted this event after witnessing the quality, caliber and character of such fine players and coaches from the three clubs.
Joe Di Meglio, President of Brisbane Magic Futsal expected nothing less than a successful competition.
“Everyone in Queensland wanted to be part of this event. Unfortunately we could only cater three clubs and we all had a great time. The event ran smoothly and on time and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves no matter what the outcome of the result was.
“The concept was Brisbane Magic Futsal, however the praise of the day must go to Gold Coast Futsal for the way they handled the operations of the event.
“Craig Foster, who is our club patron, was very pleased to see all the players taking part along with their parents who made the effort to bring them down to participate”.
There are plans to stage two events next season with one in Brisbane and the other in the Gold Coast with an expansion plan to include a few more clubs. Details will be revealed soon.
Players from the Gold Coast United Football Club were on hand to present the awards at the end of the day and the following players received their individual awards;
· Most Valuable Player – Cristian Di Meglio (Under 11 Brisbane Magic Futsal)
· Golden Boot – Luke Reynolds (Under 10 Futsal North Coast)
· Golden Goal – Nikola Mirkovic (Under 14 Gold Coast Futsal)
