Sydney City went through to the preliminary final by outlasting the Quake in an absorbing competitive game that wasn’t pretty but where every player gave everything they had for their team.

The game was an even contest throughout with both sides having an equal amount of attempts on goal, but the game was noted for it’s mid court battle and committed defending.

Laura Morabito made a fine save to deny an Annika Chapman freekick and Eagles Amy Harrison found Mel Caceres whose shot was well saved by Laura Murtagh an outfield player deputising in goal for regular keeper Dana Buttigieg.

Elizabeth Ralston had a shot saved by Laura Morabito and an Annika Chapman shot grazed the post.

Shortly before half time the Eagles broke the deadlock when Logan Garard received the ball unmarked upfront then turned and slipped the ball past the keeper to make it 1-0.

In the second half the match continued as an absorbing competitive contest with neither side giving an inch.

Laura Murtagh came out block a Mel Caceres shot that looked a certain goal.

Half way through the second half Sydney City got the breakthrough they needed with two goals in quick succession that sealed the victory.

Angela Mokhtar found some space on the right side and slammed the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Then moments later the Eagles scored again when Logan Garard scored her second of the match when she slipped the ball past the keeper to make it 3-0.

Lucy Chapman fought her way past Eagles defenders but Laura Morabito came out to make a great save and shortly after Laura produced another fine save to deny Elizabeth Ralston.

The Quake weren’t happy with the way the game was refereed but in the end the Sydney City side were able to find ways to break the deadlock and hopefully the win might spur them on for a great performance in the preliminary final next weekend.
