Call of duty for ACT Futsal trio
Angelo Konstantinou, Tom Rogic and Pat Ross-Magee representing Australia with the Futsalroos
ACT Futsal trio Angelo Konstantinou, Tom Rogic and Pat Ross-Magee have been selected in the Futsalroo’s squad for the 2010 AFC Championships to be held in Uzbekistan from 23rd-30th May.
The talented indoor players, who were in the ACT Cobras team that finished as runner’s-up in the 2010 FFA Futsal National Championships held in Canberra, form part of a 14-man squad set to battle it out with Asia’s finest in order to be crowned Futsal Champions of the region.
All three were also part of the Australian squad that won their qualification tournament by defeating Vietnam 4-1 in Jakarta in February and did enough in training camps since then to impress Head Coach Steven Knight who selected them for this prestigious competition.
Their tour of duty begins with a pre-tournament training camp in Thailand with warm-up matches scheduled for 16th May against Thai Port FC and 18th May against the Thailand National team before heading to the tournament in Uzbekistan.
The Futsalroo’s have been drawn alongside Kuwait, Iran and Tajikistan in a tough round of pool matches and will play on three successive days from 23rd-25th May. Providing the team is successful in qualifying from its Pool, the tournament resumes after a rest day with Quarter Final, Semi Final and Finals action between the 27th and 30th.
In the other groups, host nation Uzbekistan has drawn Chinese Taipei, Indonesia and Lebanon in Group A, whilst 2008 runner’s up Thailand is drawn in Group C with three-time semi-finalists Kyrgyzstan, Korea Republic and Vietnam. Group D includes 2006 winners Japan with Turkmenistan, Iraq and China PR.

What was the FFA thinking – sending them to Bangkok? The embassy has now closed. Did they even do a risk assessment? Team was only picked a week before the trip, how much preparation actually went into preparation – and I don’t mean the players.
