Joga Bonita: Josh Rees is off to Brazil to play futsal.

Boambee Bombers striker Josh Rees has his passport ready to fly to Brazil this week in his first international football experience. Rees was selected in the Australian Vikings Dalponte futsal team following his standout performance for Northern NSW at the national school titles in Albury last year where he won the golden boot award for most goals scored in the tournament.

“It was a great experience to play against some of the best futsal players in Australia,” Rees said.

Since being selected for the Vikings National team in September Josh has trained by playing futsal over the summer in the Sportz Central competition, as well as representing Northern New South Wales at the Pacific Junior Regional Titles.

“I love playing futsal, but it has also helped my skills in playing outdoor,” Josh said referring to great start to year with Boambee FC.

In his debut with the under 19’s he scored what ended up being the winning goal against Northern Storm with a bicycle kick. Josh has had some great influences since moving to Coffs Harbour three years ago.

After being coached by Brady Parker in Under 15’s, and then under Richard Evans in the representative North Coast U16’s, Jeff Hughes, as well as being coached at Christian Community School by Wade Parker, he has gone from strength to strength representing the region in both forms of the game and now being selected for the Vikings U16’s Australian Futsal team.

This two-and-a-half-week representative tour will take Josh to the official training centre of Brazilian Football, the Graja Comary, as well as the ‘SMC Futsal School of Excellence’ in Belo Horizonte, where he will be taught by some of the world’s best futsal coaches.

He will play in the ‘Rei Pele’ Games and visit Pele’s home town as well as playing a number of friendly games against some of the best school sides in Brazil.

The tour will not only focus on futsal, but also offer Josh the opportunity to visit Brazilian landmarks including Copacabana Beach and the famous Christ on Hill statue on mountains overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

“I really want to thank all the family and friends who have helped to go on this tour, by raising money or helping me train.

“It’s the trip of a life time, and I am going to make the most of it. Hopefully I can make some lifelong friends and bring back some skills that can help me play football professionally one day.”
