The Grand Final and boy didn’t it live up to it’s expectation.
After a convincing win by Hammond Park over JJ United in the Semi Final and Pure Blonde Box scrapping through in extra time against Razzling, it was time for the big one, the Grand Final.
Past match ups between these two teams have both been close. A win going either way, 1st playing 2nd in what was to be a great encounter.
The players shook hands, the whistle blew and it was game on!
Pure Blonde settled into the game quickly scoring a goal quite early on, putting the pressure on Hammond Park, asking a few early questions. But Hammond Park did not take long to reply. A cracking left foot strike from Robert equalised the match and from this point on we knew we were in for a great game. The intensity was high and Pure Blonde were holding the possesion well but this did not seem to bother Hammond Park, they stood their ground and defended equally as well.
Pure Blonde continued to create opportunities but failed to put the ball in the back of the net due to some poor shooting and some brilliant goal keeping by Kenny.
Eventually Hammond Park could not hold on and Pure Blonde broke the defense one more time and managed to put one away to take the lead 2-1.
The intensity was still there and legs were getting tired, especially for Pure Blonde. Hammond Park were creating more and more chances but would there be enough time on the clock to peg one back? With 2 minutes to go, 2-1 down, Robert lined up his left foot laces and sent another shot screaming into the back of the net, Bam! 2-2 baby.
The crowd went wild, Hammond Park running on adrenalin and Pure Blonde looking really tired. The 2 minutes slowly counted down and we were now into extra time.
Teams gathered into a huddle and a few words were said before once again it was game on, extra time 5 mins each way, golden goal!
After a mintue of extra time it looked like Pure Blonde had a little more life and finally started to find some form that had gotten them to the final in the first place. Holding the ball, passing it wide and hammering the goal. There was just one problem, they couldn’t get the ball past Kenny who was having a blinder!
Hammond Park managed to hold on for the first half and in the 2nd it almost looked like they were going to do enough to send the game into penalties. Until, 2 mins to go, a nice one-two by Pure Blonde’s Eldon and Nestor managed to tap one in, to see them take out the match as Vikings Champions!
Congratulations to both teams for a great season and a great final, a game to remember.
