Hassan leads Fiji’s FUTSAL campaign


Lautoka striker Kamal Hassan will spearhead the Fiji FUTSAL team’s campaign in the 2010 Oceania Futsal Championship that kicks off at the Vodafone Arena in Suva this Sunday.

The 25 year old, Fiji Football Association’s 2009 Footballer of the Year who has featured in the abbreviated code in the past three years was chosen based on his experience.

The Navosa lad will be assisted by Ba utility Petero Dauniseka who will make an international debut in Futsal.

The 12 member Fiji Futsal team was announced at the Fiji Football Association headquarters in Suva this afternoon.

Waitakere United marksman Roy Krishna is another big name that has made the team which will feature in the round robin competition against Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tahiti, Tuvalu, New Caledonia and New Zealand.

Four key players were dropped from the team after getting injured and have been replaced accordingly.

Fiji U20 goalie Thakur Narayan has been replaced by Tavua’s Josaia Ratu, Nadi left-back Ratu Josefata Dugucagi replaces Sandeep Nair, Sedrick Dutt has come on board for Samuela Drudru while Nasinu’s Vikash Reddy has replaced Ilisoni Logaivou.

Fiji Futsal Commission secretary Jainendra Sukhu said the team that has been selected comprises of the best Futsal players the host nation has to date.

“The fittest and best players have made the cut after going through vigorous training and staying in camp from 12 July, he said.

“I wish to thank the Fiji Football Association technical department for assisting the team in its preparation as well as Scott Giligan, the Oceania Futsal Development Officer who has really helped the team with his expertise.”

“This championship will act as buildup for the World Cup qualifiers which will be held in April next year.”

Captain Hassan said he was honored to lead the team for the second consecutive year.

“I am indeed very honored and proud to lead my nation in the championship and we should be able to give our best in front of our home crowd.”

“We are the best prepared team and I want to thank our coach Hussain Sahib and Scott Giligan for spending so much time with us.”

“There will be pressure on us to perform but we will take one game at a time and will treat all opponents as equal since this is an international event” added the 2008 OFC Futsal Championship Golden Boot winner.

The OFC Futsal Championship will be played from 8th-14 August.
