JOMA Women’s Futsal Premier League
Round 1 – Review
Defending champions Boomerangs FS have started the defence of their JOMA Women’s Futsal Premier League crown with a hard-fought, yet ultimately convincing, 3-0 defeat of Tuggeranong United in the first round of action played at the Australian Institute of Sport on Friday evening.
The Boomerangs, who won last season’s competition in some style, were made to work extremely hard by United in a first-half that saw both teams go close on numerous occasions but fail to break the deadlock thanks to some fine goalkeeping from the respective shot-stoppers, Rebecca Collins for Boomerangs and Emilie Adams for Tuggeranong United.
The second period saw the Boomerangs began to take command of proceedings and eventually wear down their tenacious opponents. A brace of goals from Sarah Crittenden and another from Laura Jones saw the Boomerangs home with maximum points and a positive start to the 2010/2011 season.
Meanwhile a star-studded ACTAS threw down the gauntlet of challenge to the rest of the division by walloping Players FC 6-0 in their opening match of the competition. New to the Women’s Futsal Premier League the team may be, but its constituent parts are all Futsal players of some repute with Catherine Brown, scorer of a hat-trick in this match one who played in the defeated WVFC Timberwolves team from last year.
Brown, who also was a member of the Woden Valley team that claimed the Grand Final in the outdoor version of the game, The Tradies Women’s Premier League, was joined on the scoresheet by Ashleigh Palombi and Meg McLaughlin. The latter, who plays for Woden Valley in football and was on target twice in the under-18 Premier League Grand Final loss to Belconnen United, showed some of the form that has seen her achieve international recognition in the 11-a-side game with a well-taken double of her own.
In perhaps the match of the evening Tuggeranong Unite Vogue, appearing for the first time at this level, defeated WVFC Timberwolves 5-4 in a match that swung from end-to-end. Leading 4-22 at the break, Vogue had to withstand some late Timberwolves pressure to hang on to their win in this nine-goal thriller.
Canberra United W-League representative Snez Veljanovska, who plays her outdoor football with Belwest Foxes, led the way with a hat-trick for Vogue, one more than the brace netted by her Foxes’ team mate Kim Crocker. The Timberwolves had a Foxes’ two-goal heroine of their won in the prolific Hope Wilkins, but her double, added to by goals from Erin Clout and Isabella Boag-Taylor, were not enough to gain a tangible reward in a Futsal classic.
The fourth scheduled match of the evening between Belconnen United and Belconnen United Sparks was postponed.
