New Zealand Men Make History

Vikings NZ

The New Zealand Men last night qualified for the World Futsal Association Futsal World Cup to be contested in Colombia March 2011.

Having to beat Australia to secure the Oceania birth the Kiwi’s looked down and out with 3minutes to play and trailing 1-3 but goals to Rae and Vaughan in quick tied the game up at 3 all and brought extra time. The Australians probably had the best of the chances in extra time but some great saves by NZ keeper Layvaine Davids saw the match go to a penalty shootout.

After 3 rounds all were successfull but a miss from standout Australian player Deneesh in the forth round was the break New Zealand needed to fulfil a dream.

The side remains unbeaten in the Vikings World Championships and have qualified already for the semifinals. Today they will take on the classy Chinese side that will determind final group positions.

Another piece of NZ Futsal history was made at the Championships as well with the NZ women defeating Australia 4-1 for the first time ever. The girls reversed their first round encounter (a 2-1 loss) with some outstanding play and true grit and determination in defence. The job is only 1/2 done for the women as they MUST defeat Malaysia whom they went down to 1-4 on the first day of competition. A win will see them advance to the grand final a loss will see them play for 3rd and 4th.
