On the park, Ballarat Lady Devils pair Hannah Kennedy and Tina Benoit are teammates.
Take the matter indoors, though, and the pair find themselves on opposite sides.
When Ballarat hosts the inaugural Australia Futsal Club Championships today and tomorrow, Hannah will be kitted out in the blue of Futsal Ballarat, Benoit in the red of the Lady Devils in the open women’s division of the indoor soccer tournament.
More than 350 players will line up for 42 teams from across the state for what tournament director Andrew Burgess describes as the only open futsal club championship in the country.
“With 350 players registered it is already the largest futsal tournament in regional Victoria and has attracted significant interest and support form clubs statewide,” Burgess said.
“It is our intention for this tournament to become the annual futsal club championship and for champion teams from across the country to come here.
“Football Federation Victoria sees this as a real opportunity to grow the sport in country Victoria.”
There will be nine teams competing in the open men’s division, several featuring players from the Ballarat Red Devils. Others include the Melbourne Flames and Geelong Futsal Club, which both compete in the Victorian Futsal League.
Junior competition begins today at 9am at the Minerdome and Ballarat Badminton Stadium in Wendouree, with open and masters competition at the Minerdome from 9am tomorrow.
