Camden Haven High School has paid tribute to its successful 2010 under-19 boys futsal champions.

The team won the recent Australasian titles held in Queensland and were further honoured by the school and the Port Macquarie-Hastings region by being named Sports Team of the Year at the recent Australia Day Awards.

The prestigious award was accepted by Lachlan Sessions at the inaugural presentation night.

Lachlan said he and his teammates were “very honoured and humbled by this award as it spanned the entire region and encompassed all ages and sporting teams”.

The team consisted of Lachlan, Daniel Trompert, Jake Geary, Will Bennett, Tom Robinson, Sam Ward and Sam Ryan.

They were stunned by the magnitude of their achievement and the resulting awards and the recognition they and their school had received.

The boys still vividly recalled the ‘golden goal’ winner that sealed the premier title against all odds.

Daniel and Sam explained, “We knew that we had a chance going into the final, however we only had seven players and most of us were carrying some injuries”.

The squad’s determination, skill and teamwork proved too much for the gallant and more fancied opposition, Downlands College.

The boys, many of whom have now graduated from CHHS, returned to the school to present their award and medallion to the principal Mrs Margaret Hutchinson.

They also had one of their winning shirts framed to commemorate this landmark victory.

It was the first time that this school had won such a title and award and the future of futsal at CHHS appears strong.

Many of these boys are now pursuing their futsal careers with Lachlan, Daniel and Sam Ward making the All Stars Australian team and travelling to China.

Sam Ward has also been selected in the youth men’s team to compete in the USA and Lachlan is also going to college in America on a sporting scholarship.

The school and team has thanked Vikings Futsal and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for recognising the boys’ achievements.
