Poor old Queensland can’t seem to take a trick, first it was floods then a cyclone and now the local NSW Far North Coast Men’s Futsal team has just returned home as undefeated champions in the FFA Queensland State summer Futsal League, taking their state trophy as well !
The Summer League season got off to a shaky start For the Far North Coast as the team had to miss the first two rounds of competition while they were in Sydney where they won the Silver medal at the FFA NSW State titles in October. It cost them 6 forfeited points even before they had kicked a ball, however it was soon evident the local Far North Coast lads were in a class of their own. They started destroying very strong and well-established representative teams like Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast week after week. The Queenslanders had no answer to the superior skills of our players like ex Brazilian professional Vinnie Leite, Fabio Fraga, Mark Riley, Murray Wade, Roman Hoffmann, Uke, Felipe Amorim, Knight and Priori.
Despite difficulties maintaining consistent player availability while travelling long distances around southern Queensland every fortnight, the team scored an unprecedented 97 goals in 10 games to outclass all of the Queensland regional teams. In addition Vinnie Leite, Tim Knight have also been coaching and mentoring local junior representative teams as well. Some of the other lads have also been helping out with the juniors on mentoring days and before quite a few exhibition games.
As is often the case in any sport, the Grand Final at Cornubia Stadium in Brisbane was a much closer affair. With a little help from three local fill in players, Thiago Priori from Byron Bay and goal keeping brothers Matt and Nick Baker from Ballina, it took a while for FNC to get into a solid rhythm. However the result was never in doubt with Far North Coast deserved 2011 Queensland Futsal League Champions. It seems the future of Futsal in Byron Shire and the NSW Far North Coast is looking very bright.
