Navy win Australian Defence Forces Futsal Title (NSW)
A solid 6-3 win over Army
The Navy Men’s team recently won the ADFF National Futsal Carnival for the second successive year.
The Men’s team thrashed Air Force 10-4, APS 7-3 and crushed archrivals Army 6-3 to mark the dawn of their dynasty in ADF Futsal.
Team captain ABCIS Ben Sheard said winning the Futsal title and thumping Army helped to avenge Navy’s loss to Army in the 2010 ADF Tri-service soccer championship, which was determined on for-and-against goal statistics.
“The victory is especially sweet because we beat Army so convincingly,” he said.
ABCIS Sheard, of HMAS Harman, was one of Navy’s best players, scoring a hat-trick against Air Force, while LSSN Alex Rossi scored three goals against APS.
Navy’s other stars were SMN Alex Hermans and AB Liam Chandler, while LS Dan Capilli deserves special mention for his commitment and enthusiasm not only in Futsal but almost every other Navy sports team.
ABCIS Sheard said this victory bodes well for Navy’s campaign in the ADF Tri-service soccer championship later this year, which will select the players for the ADF tour of New Zealand.
The players dedicated the triumph to the Navy birthday earlier in the week.
The Navy Women’s team were unlucky runners-up to Army, on for-and-against, after drawing 4-4 will their archrivals and edging Air Force 1-0, only to see Army crush RAAF 6-0 in the decider.
The ADFF National Futsal Carnival was played at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, in Sydney, on March 5.
Futsal is a relatively new ADF sport that features similar rules to out-door soccer but involves only five-a-side who play two 20-minute halves.
