She might have been at Dreamworld, but futsal young gun Megan Hellmuth didn’t need to hop on a ride for the biggest thrill of her life.

After starring at the National School Futsal Championships at Mt Gravatt, the Jindalee teen was named in the Australian All-Star team during a ceremony at the popular theme park.

The under-15 Queensland City captain said it was a special moment when she was called to the stage to collect her jersey.

“I was expecting it a little because I had so much good feedback from my coaches and others,” she said.

“But I was still shocked when they called my name.

“It’s a huge honour.”

The Centenary State High School student is new to futsal having played one year at Rockhampton, before rekindling her love of the sport when she moved to Jindalee last year.

A former Queensland trampoline representative, Hellmuth led Queensland City to the decider at the national championships, before having their hopes of winning the title dashed by a ruthless Queensland Metro.

But the grand final loss didn’t change the way Hellmuth felt about her team’s performance.

“I’m really proud of the way we played as a team,” she said.

“I felt we were the best team there.”

Hellmuth’s idol was her coach at the national titles, Australian Vikings Futsal star Jasmin Kent.

Kent, who lives at Forest Lake, also coaches Hellmuth’s club side and fills in when the team is down on numbers.

She said she was impressed by Hellmuth’s leadership skills and had big hopes for the 15-year-old.

“She stood out from the team, she listened to what I had to say and stepped up and led the team well,” Kent, 24, said.

“The way she directed the team and kept her head up even when we were losing, she has all the qualities to go far.”
