The West City Crusaders got their season off to a fantastic start with 7 wins in the weekends fixture against the Greater Western Vikings at the Emerton Leisure Centre.

12 Boys

First to kick it off was the 12 boys. With a brand new team it was always going to take time for the boys to gel. The boys missed a number of opportunities in a close encounter and eventually went down 7-4.

Goal scorers: Bailey Morris x4

12 Girls

Next to step on were the 12 girls. The girls never stopped trying from start to finish but were eventually overrun by a determined Vikings outfit. The final score line 12-1 was hard on the girls but they will only get better, as most of them are new to futsal.

Goal scorers: Annie Daczko x1

14 Boys

The 14 boys went into the game looking to get the Crusaders back on track, which they did with style. After a nervy start, the boys managed to pile on the goals and ran out 8-3 winners to get the club their first win of the year.

Goal scorers: Chris Loucos x3, Liam Foote x2, Isaac Baldock x1, Bradley Wright x1, Cameron Wright x1,

14 Girls

The 14 girls were next to showcase their squad for the season. The game was a tight affair with both teams trading goals. However, the girls came to the fore and recorded a gritty 5-4 victory.

Goal scorers: Abbey Lawless x2, Emily Dwyer x1, Charlotte Dazcko x1, Melina Manna x1

16 Boys

The winning feeling then rubbed off on the 16 boys, as they were next to step on the court. The game was played at a frenetic pace with both sides trading goals throughout the game. The boys eventually gained a two goal lead to make it 4-2 and that’s the way it stayed.

Goal scorers: Alex Boyadjian x2, Keegan Foote x2

16 Girls

Next up was the 16 girls. The game was a tight affair with both teams getting a feel of the game. However, the girls stepped it up and recorded a dream 2-1 opening victory in an extremely tight tussle.

Goal scorers: Dimitie Whiteman x2

Youth

With plenty of encouraging results in pre-season, the youth lead by young gun coach Nick Verdos was a team to watch out for this year. Once again the intensity levels were high with our boys, as they peppered the Viking’s goal. Both teams were dominant in patches but the boys finally took control and won 5-3.

Goal scorers: Mervan Cakal x3, Shiyar Cakal x1, Alex Murrell x1

Women

In one of the games of the round the women faced off against a well drilled Vikings outfit. In a fiery clash the women ran out winners 2-1 to send their season off to the best possible start.

Goal scorers: Brooke Slaughter x1, Bianca Adattini x1

Mens

The last team to play were the mens. The mens have recruited well this year with the signing of 3 time premier league goal keeper of the year Peter Akers as coach for the season. The additions of Brendan Riley, Robbie Greenway and Ben Lam from Premier League have also bolstered the squad. However, with injuries and commitments to players, the mens took the field with only 4 regular first team players. This didn’t affect the way they played as they piled on 7 goals in the first half to end the game 10-3 winners.

Goal scorers: David McMurray x4, Shahin Matanagh x2, Dyar Jalal x1, Brendan Riley x1, Pat Halocha x1, Alex Murrell x1

All in all, a great start to the season for all the Crusaders. 7 wins should see us right near the top of the club championship after round 1.
