Fight for semi-final spots goes to the wire in WFPL (ACT)
Round 14 results in the ACT Womens Premier League
The fight for the two remaining semi-final spots in the Women’s Futsal Premier League will go to the final round of action after results in Round 14 left both places up for grabs. With Woden Valley and Boomerangs FS already secured in positions one and two the three way fight for places three and four will be decided this Friday at the AIS.
Gungahlin United Suns, Belconnen United and El Diva Belwest all harbor ambitions of a place in the semi-finals and with the Suns facing league leaders Woden Valley both El Diva and the Blue Devils will be confident of winning their games and sneaking into the finals. A win for both, over teams positioned lower down the ladder, will ensure that they will make the semi-finals whilst the Suns require a win of their own to be sure of progression.
Chances to make their positions secure were wasted by both last week as the Blue Devils and the Suns drew their matches 3-3 although Belconnen would have been happier with their outcome against Boomerangs FS than Gungahlin who drew with bottom of the table Tuggeranong United. Sigourney Dunk, Katherine McFadyen and a sixth of the year for Annica Schoo, earned United a point against the high flying Gungahlin United for whom Maddison Cox, Kiley Green and Laura Sofoulis, scoring her eleventh goal of the competition, netted. Meanwhile, Jessica Goyne, Alison Lound and Clare Munro earned the Blue Devils two points from a high-scoring draw with reigning champions Boomerangs FS. Michaela Day struck twice for the Boomerangs with Rachel Crittenden ensuring the match ended all-square.
Woden Valley moved serenely along at the top of the table, remaining unbeaten, after thrashing Players FC 6-0. Ashleigh Palombi extended her lead at the top of the Golden Boot charts with another double with Sophie Kochinos scoring her eleventh and twelfth of the campaign. Julia De Angelis and Emma Thornton completed a satisfactory evening’s work for Woden. And a hat-trick from Luisa Marzotto helped El Diva Belwest win the Belwest derby with an 8-2 rout of the Foxes. Kim Crocker (2), Vanh Manthongsy, Sabrina Spinapolice and Michelle Thompson joined Marzotto amongst the goals for an improving El Diva side who will hope to take their form into the crucial match this week. Hayley Buckingham scored twice in reply for the Foxes,
