Prawns comeback to win Men’s FPL final (ACT)
A 5-4 win over the Boomerangs in the ACT Mens Premier League grand final
Grand Final
Thursday 15th December 2011
Boomerang FS 4 (Jason O’Dwyer, Travis Dries, Kristian Collins, Sam Smith) Canberra City Prawns 5 (Daniel Fulton(3), Ryan Keir, Ryan Kyprianou)
A late goal from Daniel Fulton has seen the Canberra City Prawns take out the Men’s Futsal Premier League final 5-4 inflicting the Boomerangs first defeat of the season.
Boomerang FS looked like they would finish the season unbeaten in the opening stages of the match. Some quick one touch passing between Kristian Collins and Travis Dries cut the Prawns defence in half and eventually lead to Jason O’Dwyer nailing home the opening goal.
Travis Dries extended the Boomerangs lead to two from the penalty spot after a Trent Flanigan handball inside the area. The Prawns then looked to settle and after holding possession for a number of minutes Daniel Fulton took on the Boomerang defence, found a gap and slotted home the Prawns first goal of the night.
Canberra City looked to start the second half the way they finished the first. Fulton went straight on the attack from the kick-off and forced two swift saves out of Boomerang custodian, Domenic de Marco.
This then lead to a counter and when Boomerang FS’ Sam Smith’s shot hit the post Collins just had to tap into an empty net to give his side a two goal advantage two minutes into the second half.
It was a five minute period that proved to be the difference between the two sides with the Prawns scoring three goals in quick succession. The first, a nice pass from Flanigan allowed an easy tap-in at the far post for Ryan Keir. A minute later they had levelled the score 3-3 through a curling Fulton shot before they had taken the lead with nine minutes to go when once again a dangerous Fulton run opened up the Boomerang defence. Fulton then settled and shot but was denied by the woodwork before Ryan Kyprianou followed up and calmly placed it into the net to give the Prawns the lead for the first time of the match.
The Boomerangs never gave up and when Travis Dries shot was spraying wide Sam Smith appeared out of nowhere to smash home the equaliser with seven remaining.
It would be the Canberra City Prawns though that had the last say with two minutes remaining. Robert Cattanach managed to find the feet of Fulton whose little shimmy was enough to fool the defence and the keeper as he buried the winner.
With seconds remaining Prawns goalkeeper, Kieran Stroh pulled off an extra-time saving shot as Boomerang FS looked to grab the late equaliser. It was all too late though as Canberra City held on for the win and in the process ended Boomerang FS’ chances of an unbeaten season.
