Futsalroos train-on squad for the upcoming AFC Futsal Championship 2012

FFA Media Release

Qantas Futsalroos Head Coach Steven Knight has named a 24-man train-on squad following the recent 2012 FFA National Futsal Championships to prepare for the upcoming AFC Futsal Championship 2012 – ASEAN qualifiers which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 21-26 February 2012.

Knight believes that from the group of players that his coaching staff have identified he will be able to form a squad that will be successful at the ASEAN qualifiers.

“From the group we have selected, we have a very good balance of youth and experience,” said Knight

“We will have a number of training sessions over the next couple of weeks before the final selection is made later next month.

“We know that our opposition in ASEAN is always improving and we are expecting some very tough matches, but I believe that the boys will be up to the challenge,” concluded Knight.

The Qantas Futsalroos have been placed alongside Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam in Group B of the ASEAN qualifiers for the AFC Futsal Championship 2012.

The Qantas Futsalroos opening match of the tournament will be against Cambodia on 21 February (kick-off 4:30pm local, 8:30pm AEDT), followed by Malaysia on 22 February (kick-off 7:00pm local, 11:00pm AEDT) with their last group match against Vietnam on 23 February (kick-off 5:00pm local, 9:00pm AEDT).

The top three teams from the ASEAN qualifiers will progress to the AFC Futsal Championships 2012 which will be held in the United Arab Emirates in May.

    1. Who would you add to the squad? With the budget, or lack there of, knightly doesn’t get the opportunity to see all the players from states other than NSW in their local competitions. I he lived in Victoria or QLD I’m sure this would work in their favour also.

  1. I thought Danny Ngaluafe was playing with Inner City or one of the V-League teams from VIC? Rather than ‘No current club’ Didn’t he just represent Vic at nationals? Good luck to the squad, not much time to prepare the team.

  2. Surely you, ronalso, know the inside scoop? This selection, like the last 2 time the futsalroo’s have been away, is about cutting costs. The FFA won’t pay for a 3rd coach and as such Roger will be named as the third choice keeper behind Spath and 1 of the other 3. As stated above this has been the case with the ASEAN and Asian champs in 2010 with roger behind Spath and Angelo.

  3. Kc, it’s not so much that I would add anyone else to the squad, it’s just that Roger unfortunately does not rank anywhere near third spot Gk in Australia. Great keeper in his prime and also great bloke, but u would have thought they could have squeezed another younger keeper, possibly with an eye to future selection.

  4. i dont believe Andre is eligible to represent Aus. He is brazilian and i dont believe been here for 5 years… can anyone clarify the FIFA ruling?

  5. 5 years is usually the go. Most of the victorians are internationals making them ineligible. As stated above roger is there as coach first and foremore. He has to be ‘in the suad’ so he can travel with the team. It’s as simple as FFA trying to cut costs! There are 2 young keepers in the squad, keiran and Alastair.
