A Glen Innes High School Student has been selected to represent her country in the sport of futsal later this year.

Melanie Symons, 13, will jet off to New Zealand in November as part of the 12-14 Australian girls futsal team.

Futsal is a relatively new sport that has really taken off in Australia. It is a five a side game based on indoor football played on a basketball court.

Melanie, who has been playing football for four years, began playing futsal last year for a premier league team from Coffs Harbour.

As a result of good form she was chosen in the Northern NSW team, and following strong performances there, she was picked in the Australian side.

Melanie will tour the Northern Island of New Zealand playing a number of games from November 16 to 28.

To be picked to represent Australia is a remarkable achievement for the Year 8 student, who has only been playing futsal for about 12 months.

Melanie said she was overwhelmed upon finding out she had been picked last Tuesday.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” she said.

“It hasn’t come to reality.”

Melanie said there were a number of people she would like to pay tribute to for helping her along the way.

“I’d like to thank Vikings Futsal and Kelly and Tara Archibald, without them I wouldn’t have had this great opportunity,” she said.
