For the first time a Gympie State High School boy’s futsal team has won at the SEQ titles.

Football Coordinator at Gympie High, Geoff Haig, said the under-15 boys met the Gold Coast’s Elanora team in the finals last week and won.

They had survived the competition against 54 other teams.

Captain Billy Bayldon said it was a hard-fought win.

“We had beaten them in the previous round so we were pretty confident,” he said.

Bayldon explained that in years eight and nine the team was knocked out, so it was good to finally come home with a trophy.

“This year we trained more, harder and better.”

He said the team of nine boys worked on being more competitive.

“Everyone wanted to be involved,” he said.

Schools from as far north as Hervey Bay right down to the Gold Coast competed.

Haig said the under-15 futsal team was a good bunch of boys, who worked hard for their win.

Player Mitch Davis, who heads overseas with the Australian boys futsal team next week, said he loved the sport.

“It’s the fitness and ability you need to win.”
