Solid start for Strikers teams (VIC)
St Albans Strikers reports on their teams MFL Pre-Season matches
Saturday the 24th of March, Whiiten Oval Sports Halls, Footscray
The Strikers U’16/Youth team and Mens teams had good starts to their 2012 MFL Pre-Season matches, taking on the Cobras and Melbourne Futsal respectively. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon it was the Youth / U’16 team who started the proceedings having their first ever hitout together. The boys were a bit nervy at the start, which was to be expected, however the boys started to find their rhythm late in the first half. Daniel Slovacek younger brother of Strikers Mens team player Josh Slovacek showed he was definetely one to watch putting in a great perormance. James Yuang – Kur also contrbuting, with his sheer pace always troubling the older Cobras. Nicholas Tzoutzidis also having a solid game in goals and the ever improving Vaughn Steward continuing to improve as pivot. The final score was seven a piece, with an exciting last few minutes as both teams were going all out trying to win the game. With 13 players in the squad and with more players to come, it was decided soon after the game that it was best to split the team and enter two teams in the MFL. The younger 15 – 16 year olds would play in the U’16 and the older 16 – 18 year olds would play in the Youth / Division 2 Mens.

The Strikers Mens team played the new Melbourne Futsal which was always going to be a tricky affair for the Strikers. After what seemed to be a million chances being wasted in the first half, it wasnt until late in the first half that the Strikers put one in the old onion bag. To Melbourne’s credit they kept on plugging away and kept the Strikers honest going into the half time break five one down. The Final scores of 11:4 not doing justice to the dominance the Strikers had over their opponents during the match. The Strikers will definetely need to be more cut throat in front of goals if they want to be challenging for MFL and F League glory.
The Mens team are back at training this Saturday the 31st of March at Footscray at 4pm. Lets hope the boys can back up from the previous nights fundraiser. The U’16 and Youth team are training at 1pm.
