Wauchope High School students Georgia Williams and Breanna Bax, have represented Mid North Coast Blaze at the Australia Vikings Futsal Regional Championships held in the State Hibiscus Sports Stadium near Brisbane at Easter.
Thirteen year old Williams was the youngest player and captain of the U/15 Girls representative squad while Bax captained of the U/16 Girls representative squad.
The good friends also played strong defensive roles, and both scored a goal each during the championships from defensive positions.
The U/15 team finished the tournament with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses suffered in earlier matches.
The team’s losses were to South West Brisbane 6-2 and the undefeated QLD team Wide Bay 5-3. This placed the team in second position ranking to Wide Bay with 11 points and 26 Goals scored in the 6 matches leading up to the finals.
In the first U/15 Semi Final, Mid North Coast met South West Brisbane again and was locked at 1-1 at the half time break. Mid North Coast scored 6 goals in the second half running away with the match 7-1, and went on to qualify in the final against second Semi Final winner Wide Bay.
The Mid North Coast team played their best futsal in the finals with structured play and accurate passing under the leadership and direction of their captain Georgia Williams.
This resulted in the team being 2 nil up at half time. Wide Bay scored a late goal in the second half but could not level the scores due to the strong defence and excellent goal keeping from the Mid North Coast Team.
Mid North Coast Blaze won the match 2-1 to take out the first Australian Vikings Futsal Regional Championship for the NSW Region.
The U/16 Squad with Bax leading the way were dynamic in defeat.
The team was just starting to hit top gear with a draw and a super 3 nil win in their last couple of matches.
The U/16 team was short of players during the tournament due to injuries. Chloe Rootes and Shelby Coleman from the U/15 squad played up in age, to support the team with numbers.
Bax played a great tournament and capitalised on her experience and knowledge to control the matches and call the shots from her defensive role.
The side played six matches and finished with 1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses. During the 4 matches that the team lost, they held their ground well and truly into the second half.
It was only in the later stages of the games that the matches got away from them. The side finished in a credible 5th place with some great skills displayed on court and in the Goal Keeping Role.
These two squads will further develop from the experience gained during these Championships, and they will definitely be a force to be reckoned with at the National Championships, to be held in Townsville QLD in October 2012.
Williams will be representing Australia in April/May this year in the U/13 Australian Vikings Futsal Squad that will be touring New Zealand and taking on the best of the Kiwis.
