The Southside edition of the girls high school futsal competition took place yesterday, 29th May, at the Mpowerdome in Fadden. The gala day saw 5 teams take part in the year 7/8 competition, and 6 in the year 9/10 competition. After a tiring day of group matches in year 7/8 competition, the grand final saw Stromlo High School take on Lanyon High School to decide the number 1 and 2 ranking for the ACT wide finals, to be held later in June. After a tense and closely fought match, Stromlo made the result safe with a couple of late goals to win the match 3-0 and go to the ACT finals as the number one ranked southside team. Lanyon will join them at the finals, but will have the tougher task of taking on the top ranked northside team.
In the year 9/10 competition, there were clearly two top sides after the group stage and fittingly, they made it safely through their semi finals to set up a intriguing final. Having not met during the group stage, and having had similar results against the other teams, it was clear that this would be the match of the day. And so it proved, with the game see-sawing throughout before Lanyon High School finally got the upper hand to secure a 4-3 victory over Calwell High School. Lanyon now progress to the ACT finals as the number one ranked Southside team, with Calwell joining them as the number two ranked side.
Tomorrow, the Lyneham Netball Centre will be the venue as the Northside girls teams battle it out in the year 7/8 and year 9/10 divisions to see who will face off against the Southside teams in the ACT finals.
