Boomerangs F-League Series 1 Review (ACT)
Boomerangs sum of their first three matches in the 2012 F-League
It promised to be a fine spectacle for futsal in Australia with 11 of the 14 Futsalroo’s participating in series 1 of the 2012 F-League.
What looked like a promising weekend for the Boomerangs in the week leading up turned sour before it had even begun with ACT rep player Chris Lee injuring his ankle and Futsalroo Daniel Fogarty having to withdraw due to personal reasons Thursday night. In saying that a young Boomerangs outfit were hoping to take away 6 points from the weekends outings.
Boomerangs were up against Melbourne Heart first up. After a sloppy performance in the first 25 minutes a bomb from Glenn Smith and a well taken goal from George Cattanach would be enough for the Boomerangs to secure their first ever win in the F-League. However it did come at a cost to the already depleted Boomerangs line up with George Cattanach suffering what appeared to be a torn Achilles.
Game 2 against the highly fancied Vic Vipers started in perfect fashion with the Boomerangs defending stoutly and opening the scoring through a swift Daniel Fulton (pictured below) counter attack on 8 minutes.
Vipers hit straight back through a long range shot for which GK Ashley Collins was unsighted. A tight contest followed for the majority of the game with the vipers taking the lead shortly before the half. The Scores remained at 2-1 with both teams having numerous opportunities in the 2nd stanza. Vipers eventually wore the young Boomerangs down and scored 2 in the final minutes to run out 4-1 winners. Things went from bad to worse with a foot injury to Ryan Keir in this game.
Sunday was always going to be a tough ask with the Dural warriors boasting several Australian and NSW representatives and the Boomerangs resorting to the use of Australian GK Angelo Konstantinou on the field. The boys stood up admirably going into the break 4-2 down and managing to stay with the warriors for 30 minutes before their tiring legs got the better of the boys. Dural netting 3 times in the last 10 minutes to run away 8-3 winners.
Whilst the team only came away with 3 points instead of the 6 set out prior, there were several positives to take away. Most importantly the form of 16 Jonathan Ciminelli who got his first taste of mens futsal and did a brilliant job in a tough situation.
Boomerangs will participate in Series 2 of the F-League in Sydney 22nd – 24th of July.
